I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. My biggest problem is finding enough room for all my goodies! I’ve been cleaning out a small attic space where I can put my less used items.

  2. Biggest problem for me.. lack of closet space. My fabric itself is organized, as to color and type (Batiks, civil war, 30’s etc) and in plastic tubs, but has to be stored in whatever few space I can find.

  3. My sewing space is also my extra bedroom and I have a long arm in the room
As well. I have fabric and all the things needed to see in two different closets and and another room. It’s often a challenge to know where I put athjmgs – I read that is a common problem for many quilters. I’m hoping one day to figure out how to things and where to put things that make everything more easily accessible!!

  4. Since downsizing to a smaller sewing space I got creative and right now I don’t have any organizational problems. It used to be storing all my UFOs but I’m just working on the last one now so it’s a great feeling to have extra space to store projects. Give me time and I’m sure I’ll have a prob,em storing future projects as they pile up.

  5. My biggest organization issue is organizing my scraps. Do I organize by color, by designer, by line, by size? What to do…what to do..?

  6. My biggest problem is scraps (I keep them to make scrap quilts) and I forget where I stored different items. Even though I am organized, I’m very forgetful (past stroke).

  7. I can’t say what my biggest problem is, I have so many, too many projects in stages in stacks on my cutting table and my mid arm, fabric organization (by color, by series, by themes, what???).

  8. Is there any easy way to organize? I find it overwhelming. I have fabric in tubs and still have to pull them out to see what I have.
I wish there was a genie that could come and organize for me!l lol….

  9. My biggest organizational challenge is my fabric stash. How to separate and organize yardage that has a purpose versus what I’ve bougt on a whim. It’s like an avalanche.

  10. My biggest problem is how to keep my fabric scraps organized. I have them stored in plastic bins by color groups, but they are all different sizes and, sadly, are a jumbled mess!

  11. I have a lot of ribbon and lace that I use in making angel gowns. I’m trying to figure out how to organize them in my new sewing room. I don’t have wall space. I’m thinking of using vinyl gutters on the side of cabinets.

  12. Hi Pat
You are my biggest problem, but in a good way. 🙂
I am in the middle of all of your spectacular sewing projects and they are all in piles. I am still working on the Summertime, Let’s Go Camping, Merry & Bright, Spendid Sampler, and Village quilts. I am feeling a bit overwhelmed. From all the facebook groups, I have about 20 quilts going at a time. How should I keep all of this organized when the blocks come one at a time each month?
My next purchase is a cub Koala cabinet (for my babylock serger) and a Bernina wide arm for sit-down quilting with a Koala cabinet. I just bought a Koala cutting table and cub cadet Koala for my piecing machine.
It felt good to get all of my rulers organized last week in my cutting table. WHEW! I have collected a lot with all of these projects to do exact trimming.
I feel like it is all very expensive and sometimes overwhelming.

  13. I desperately need a better way of organizing my supplies in my sewing room! I loose notions all the time. It’s not that I actually loose them, I can’t find them once I organize. I think I need some type of system so I can find what I need!

  14. My biggest organization problem is I don’t know where to begin. Once I get started when I can’t find a spot it just moves from one place to another.

  15. My biggest problem is figuring out how to sort and store smaller scraps of fabric. Less than a fat quarter. I like to applique so I want to keep them but I don’t want to cut them too small.

  16. I live in my RV and the dining area is my sewing space. My problem is PILES everywhere of supplies and fabric with no rhyme or reason!

  17. My biggest challenge in organizing is finding enough space for all my sewing projects. My one little bedroom converted to sewing room is full and running over. I try to re-org often to keep everything i am working on at the forefront.

  18. My biggest organization issue is fabric. I try to keep projects together and that works fairly well. However, the leftover fabric is out of control. I keep thinking that I will work on dividing it by color and size, but I would rather be sewing.

  19. Hello, love your koala furniture, I have a problem with space. I have no space other than being Thankful for having a Den dinner table as my sewing table with self-healing mat, fabric cutting with creative grids on it. Putting quilt supplies on an oversized ottoman in the front room. But thats alright, I will make do. I love quilting and sewing in general❤️

  20. My biggest problem is my cutting table. I need a big one. And space is limited !!!so that is what I would like to add to my sewing room

  21. Hi, Pat! I have so many projects stacked up that I lose track of what comes next. A small, good blackboard on the wall would be so helpful! One with enough space to reprioritize would be nice. I jokingly tell friends that I can’t die for at least 20 years because I have too much fabric and nobody else would know what to do with it.

  22. My biggest struggle is with fabric scraps. Finding a way to sort and store them so They can be easily incorporated into projects.

  23. My biggest organization problem is thread storage. I have four different areas for four different kinds of thread. I would like to have in one area.

  24. thread storage is my biggest problem as I have shelves on all the walls and I have to keep all my thread in a rolling container and it I difficult to get the right color quickly

  25. My biggest organizational challenge is my fabric stash. Currently they are in big bins with some in smaller bins along with their pattern. I have the large bins divided by themes. I am not sure if they should be on boards or just folded in smaller bins.

  26. Hi, my biggest organizing problem are my scraps an all my extra 2 1/2 inch strips. I have tried baskets, bins, etc. They seem to become a mess overnight. I think I might have a leprechaun come in at night and mess them up. 😉 thank you

  27. My biggest organizational problem is storing spools of thread. I don’t want to display them on a table or wall but boxing them up makes a mess.

  28. My biggest organizational problem is keeping projects I need to work on in sight so I don’t forget about them. I should probably start a WIP journal.

  29. Thread is my biggest organizational issue. I have all my threads in plastic cases, inside a thread cube and I can’t find thread racks large enough to hold embroidery, sewing and quilting threads.

  30. My biggest problem is that I have too much & don’t know where to put it all. We have a 4 bedroom house & 2 of the bedrooms are mine. They are both filled to the brim with boxes, tubs & furniture. One room it’s to the ceiling. I am sewing in the kitchen & dining room with many tubs of fabric in the family room. My hubby said we will do the rooms together after Christmas.

  31. Since I seem to always have a couple of projects in progress at the same time so my biggest organizational problem is finding the space to put projects so I can find all the pieces and materials when I want to work on them. I need a shelf or something to keep works in progress neatly together. Right now they are in too many different places and I can’t remember where everything is located. It can be maddening.

  32. Hi Pat, I just order a sewing cabinet and cutting table. I love organization.
I recently had to give up my sewing room and now have my quilting supplies in 3 rooms.
With my new purchase I am hoping to get things better arranged so I can sew more instead of hunting for what I need. Thanks for your videos they are so helpful.
