Organizing my Studio Space, want to see…psst.. giveaway at the end

I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. I recently bought plastic baskets about 12″x14″. I used my label maker (best purchase I ever made) and printed color labels for each one. I also have a 30″s bin and a novelty bin. It was the best investment. I have gone to these bins for my projects instead of hacking up a perfectly good large piece of fabric. Consequently, the piles are going down and I am quilting for “free” LOL. I bought the baskets one or two at a time from Dollar General so the cost was spread out over time. I stack them two high in my cupboard and with the color tags stuck to them I know right where to go for the color I want.

  2. We moved from Nevada to Upstate New York. I went from a 36 x 36 foot sewing room to now having two small 8 x 10 foot bedrooms for my sewing. Miss my large sewing room. Now I am still trying to get my grove back but find it hard. I want to make quilts of color. Bright and Very colorful. Wild and crazy’s. Hopefully this year I will regain my sewing mojo.

  3. I think my biggest problem is that there are not enough hours in each day for me to get done what I want to do. I have too many interests and want to get so much done that some days it overwhelms me and I get nothing done. I have just retired so must put myself on a schedule or at least plan what to do the next day so that I have a “plan”.

  4. keeping my fabric organized, i have it all in one room but i can’t see it it’s in tubs, but i can’t display it i have a l shaped desk and a sewing table no room for shelves. i keep my ufo hanging in the closet.

  5. Throwing away any small pieces of fabric or my double sided steam and seam . I have a surger that I can’t have out unless I put my sewing machine away. Need a bigger sewing table so I can have both out at the same time😊

  6. My walls are filled with fabric stash in plastic totes. No wall space for design wall. Would love to have a sewing cabinet and matching sewing table. Have to cut and iron out side my sewing room.

  7. My biggest problem is my small space. I put shelves up, and then end up just piling stuff on the shelf. I buy plastic bins, then just pile stuff in there. I can never find what I need, or know what I have. Frustrating.

  8. My biggest problem is fabric. While I don’t have a big stash, it seems to take over the room. Especially when pulling for projects. The rejects never seem to get folded and put away in a timely manner. My second biggest problem is unfinished projects laying around.

  9. My issue is space, storage space! I have the room above the garage so it has slanted ceilings. I have little wall space & the walls are only about 48″ high before the slanted ceiling begins & ends in a large point overhead. Lighting is all overhead & casts shadows. Frustrating……………….

  10. Mine biggest issue is space! I have the room above the garage with slanted ceilings & one small window! It has “frisse” carpeting (which to me is like having short shag carpeting) that needs to be removed but WHERE will I put eveything to remove the carpet & add a tile or laminate floor? Everything, EVERYTHING would need to be carried downstairs & line the walls, rooms, hallway, etc. with the stuff until the work was finished! When we bought the house 4 years ago, it seemed like the ideal sewing room, but I can’t seem to get it quite right!

  11. No wonder you’re studio is so neat! I’m still impressed and tired of climbing over stuff9 I mean valuables,)

  12. My sewing room is small so I have to be very particular about storage. I really liked your storage ideas.

  13. My biggest organizational issue is space. I have projects sorted and I should absolutely, positively STOP looking at Instagram, quilting magazines and going to retreats, then I could stay focused on the 4,001 projects I have to do!
That said, I love the inspiration you share and the fearlessness you instill in all fellow quilters!

  14. Organizing my work table is a big problem. I have 3-4 projects going plus my cutting and pressing areas. I try to keep supplies on my rolling cart ie rotary cutter, rulers, marking pens, etc. but this only works if I am diligent about putting them away. I love my work area to be clear but it never is.

  15. My biggest problem is lack of organization! I find things all the time that I had forgotten that I had because everything’s is so scattered!
