I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. SCRAPS!!!! I have so many but I don’t want to get rid of them
It drives me crazy that I have so many!! My sewing room
Is small so that doesn’t help! Any tips would be awesome!!

  2. I can not throw anything out. I think everything I have, or have made I must keep. If I bought it, it must be good, as I worked hard to earn the money to purchase it.

  3. My biggest problem is left over scraps. I can’t throw anything away. I cut the pieces into usable sizes then what to do with the rest? I have several boxes and bins with those pieces!!! Help!

  4. Space! I’m usually very organized I just wish I had more space! All my fabric and projects have a place in my apartment I just wish it was in the same room that I sew in, lol!

  5. I too have a small space to work and love using the plastic boxes where did you get the cabinet that holds them? I missed seeing you in Hilton Head hope you come back at a later time!

  6. My sewing space is a 9 x 10 bedroom. My 2 sewing machines, computer, and fabric staxh have it overflowing. There is no room for cutting or laying out quilts. My cutting has spilled over into the living/dining area, and I use my bed as a design wall.

  7. My biggest problem is getting started. Sometimes my area is too overwhelming and I just need to start and see some progress to get it organized.

  8. My biggest problem is keeping it organized. I keep digging into shelves and dragging things out so pieces of fabric get out of place easily.

  9. How to organize fabric and scraps. Do I sort by color, theme, pattern??? Then those scraps are driving me crazy—should I cut them and store like sizes together? While I’m deciding, I just keep throwing things in the closet!

  10. I have the most problem keeping projects organized and together so when I have a few minutes to sew I can find everything. I don’t want to spend all my sewing time trying find everything and reacquainting myself with where I am in the project.

  11. My biggest problem certainly is storage, I moved into Senior Housing, 548 sq. feet apartment. Thank to a friend with a garage 1/3 to 1/2 is stored in inventoried, number boxes. When I need something, I check the inventory, call her, and when we and about 8 -12 others gather on Thursdays to quilt, and she brings that box to me.

  12. I have a quarter of our basement for my sewing room. Lots of space and wall area. I use my mothers china cabinet for fabric storage and another wood cupboard with glass doors for all my extra sewing machines and some books. I guess my only issue would be patterns in leaflets. Urgently I have them have on hooks from peg board.

  13. I’ve enjoyed reading all the posts and see many of us have the same problems. I have now expanded to 4 rooms in my house for sewing, fabric storage, cutting & pressing. My biggest problem is the new stuff that appears when I have so many projects in process. I buy faster than I sew.

  14. I think my biggest problem is letting go of fabric that is leftover from projects. I think that I may need it for something, but it just sits there!

  15. My biggest problem is not only not knowing where to put anything, but it’s the fact I don’t want to stop – I want to keep sewing. I know, there comes a time when the scraps over-take my sewing space so I’m forced to figure out what to do with them..

  16. My biggest organizational problem is the amount of small scraps I have! I bought photo boxes and labeled one 5”, 3”, and 2 1/2” and they are full! Then, I have gallon bags of scraps sorted according to color, also! Now, I have run out of storage room! I am overwhelmed with the amount of overflowing scraps!

  17. I haven’t finished putting together my storage cubes and I have fabric stacked and lying everywhere in the sewing room, the hallway, and the guest bedroom.

  18. My biggest issue is finding homes for fabric that I bought before I began to make quilts. My tastes have changed, and I’d like to destash to make room for newer fabrics!

  19. My biggest problem is to know what’s where. I’ve got large piles on my desk, boxes under my desk, lots of stuff in cupboards.

  20. My biggest problem is too much stuff in too little of a space. I am using my daughter’s old bedroom and the closet is my 2nd closet for my clothes. I also have a large chest of drawers in that room with clothes and sheets, so those are two areas that I don’t use much for fabric storage.

  21. My biggest problem is organizing my fabric. Right now I have scraps in a bin, 1-2 yd cuts on a bookcase, and bigger fabric on a shelf. It is not ideal but working so far. I should label exact yardage on each piece.

  22. My biggest problem is the small stuff, scissors, threads, seam rippers, etc.
What do you do to organize and know where you put them?

  23. I have a large bin with scraps and not sure how to organize it. I find myself going into a lot to find the right little piece to applique and most of it gets dumped on the floor to find the right color. What can I do?

  24. Sorry that should say I am working on a quilt for my brother with deer, wild turkeys, old car and guitar on it, I did one two years ago for my oldest brother and was told I have 4 brothers so now working on second oldest brother’s quilt.

  25. My problem is organizing my tools. Scissors, pins rotary cutters, marking pens. I have a bag with pockets but find that everything gets mixed up again while working on a project. I like Pat’s idea with putting projects in the cube bins.

  26. My biggest problem is lack of space. The sewing room is only 10×10, so I am trying out different ways to maximize it.

  27. After a retreat I may put may items back in the sewing room and not put everything away. Of course I already have some projects out or things tossed about from getting ready for retreat. So the room is not organized when I am ready to work. It’s a time management thing!
