I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. My biggest storage problem is small items like needles, pins, and notions. You have got me thinking about reorganizing my space. I need to make my closet space more usable.

  2. My biggest organizational problem is keeping track of my various projects, rulers, etc. Even though I have boxes, bags, totes, shelves. I can’t put my hands on what I want without digging around for things.

  3. My biggest problem is finding places for my projects I’m working on. We have two young kids who take up most of the house and like to get into everything! My sewing area is a corner in our living room. Oh, and I don’t have a place for a design wall, so it gets draped over the couch. One day I’ll be a big girl quilter. Lol. Thank you, Pat, for all the fun projects and encouragement to do something out of our comfort zones!

  4. My biggest problem is storing fabrics. I had to reclaim the linen closet because there is a lot of sunlight in my sewing room and my fabrics were getting ruined. So just finished doing that, still some more work to do.

  5. My biggest organizational problem is not having the time to get my sewing room in order. When I do have the time I am way to tired.

  6. My biggest problem is trying to be over organized and then loosing track of how i have organized something; so then every time I start a new project I can’t find anything and end up with a mess while looking for supplies! I guess that must be half the fun.

  7. my biggest problem is my husband crafts too..so even though I’ve rm tried organizing our craft room (we call it our outhouse), I will put things back but my husband doesn’t..so frustrating.

  8. My biggest problem would be space. I have all my supplies but not a place to actually set everything up and use it as I want.

  9. My biggest organization problem in my studio is unfinished projects. I start something new and the old project goes in a bin, the floor, or a table. 🙁

  10. My sewing room is slso my dining room snd woodcarving room and an all around room for doing what ever in. Hard to find places for everything.

  11. My biggest organizational problem is not enough time, lol. Actually, I need a better system for my threads.I have so many different size and types of thread, I’m not sure how to organize them.

  12. Adjusting the height of all my areas (sewing, ironing & cutting) to be accessible to my wheelchair. I have finally got the fabric storage problem solved by using the plastic drawer units sold at many stores (they are easy to get a yard sales as well) & use a large drawer for each color or use small drawers for each project. The cutting is the hardest!

  13. My biggest organizational problem is that I have too much stuff and not enough place to put it all! I don’t know enough to quit buying fabric, and there’s just no place left to stash it. When I go to look for a specific piece of fabric that I know I have….I can’t find it. My fabrics aren’t sorted by color, so hopefully that will be my next “big” re-do. Even that is going to take me weeks. Wish me luck! 🙂

  14. I need more space & major organizational lessons 😊 I have so much fabric BUT I don’t want to part with any of it, I “may” need it some day.

  15. It’s a challenge organizing everything but I am probably most challenged keeping my sewing table clear. I have a folding banquet type table I use for my machine, my cutting mat, tools, and the current project. Sometimes little things find their way to the table and before I know it my sewing space has shrunk!

  16. My biggest problem is too small of a work space. I sure a lot of plastic containers and separate my fabrics my individual projects or types of fabric. All of my patterns are in 3 ring binder and a plastic sleeve. I need to move to a larger room.

  17. My biggest organizational problem is trying figure out the best way to store my fabrics that are not currently part of a project. By color, by type, y general design, or by size?

  18. My biggest problem is organizing my tools because of space. My spare room is a guest room, computer room, office organizer, library and has some of my cottons and seasonal fabrics. My other fabrics are in storage bins in the garage. My accessories are in boxes and/ or crts. My sewing machine is at the bottom of my bed!! I cut on the dining room table with my mats behind the hutch. Hence, I’m constantly rebuying things because I can’t geyt to the ones I have and closing up my sewing when I have family over. I had a full sewing room before I moved into an apartment and a full room for fabric and extra tools. Still haven’t been able to get organized, although I try.

  19. My biggest problem is I need a large table to lay out a quilt and pin it. I have to use the kitchen counter for everything. I just have a bedroom to sew in and keep all my totes of material in the Basement. I would also like to have a sewing machine table that was large to make it easier to quilt.

  20. Where do I start? I feel like a beginner even though I have been quilting over 14 years. My thread stash is a nightmare, my fabrics need help as I think I have them organized, but really don’t feel I have what I need when I do a project. My rulers need organizing too, never can find the one I need at the time…

  24. My biggest problem is I need a large table to lay out a quilt and pin it. I have to use the kitchen counter for everything. I just have a bedroom to sew in and keep all my totes of material in the Basement. I would also like to have a sewing machine table that was large to make it easier to quilt.

I just have a bedroom to sew in and keep all my totes of material in the Basement. I would also like to have a sewing machine table that was large to make it easier to quilt.

  26. My biggest problem is after sorting items that belong together, I dont name it (label it) then when I look at it several months later I have forgotten why/what it is for.
So I’ve got to start labeling with notes.

  27. Organizing fabric is my biggest headache. Yes, headache. I cannot seem to find what I want and I know it is In in mynstash! If I had one wish granted, I would love for someone to organize my stash!

  28. It’s so hard to organize my scraps. I have them stored by color in different containers, but those take so much space. 😌

  29. My biggest problem has been so many visitors this year – moving a bed into the fabric room. So now I need to take the bed out and start over.

  30. My biggest problem is that I have too much and don’t know how or where to start getting organized. I have different types of fabric and a lot so how do I organize that… by fabric then color. Different types of thread.. it’s so overwhelming.

  31. My biggest organizational problem is my family. I have a sewing loft and use a lift to go from the ground level space to my space on the second floor. My family have buried the lift and filled in the hall way so I have no way to remove the larger items that need to leave my space. I have a much smaller space down stairs that I work in all the time and enjoy that it is mine and the family do not have access to it. One day the upstairs will be controlled once I remove all of my mom’s extra’s that I keep using for community service projects and fund raiser’s for the quilt guild I belong to.

  32. I live full time in an RV. My bags of scraps are exploding in all my spare spaces. The only organization is they are in zip locks according to shades. What to do?

  33. My organizational problem would probably have to be where to start.
I keep all my UFOs/lprojects together but as far as other fabrics, they
are all together. Also, I keep all my scraps for that project “one day” , hehe.

  34. My biggest organizational problem is trying to find the best solution to hold the very organized totes and plastic drawer storage I have. The storage totes/drawers are on nice open metal shelves but I am sick of looking at all of the totes despite the easy access and visibility I have. I am trying to decide if I should invest in kitchen cabinets or various cabinets/dressers and paint them to compliment each other. At one point, I did make curtains to hang on the metal shelves but after a while I did not care for that solution either.

  35. Hi Pat!! My biggest problem is that I am a fabricholic!! And there are constantly new lines of beautiful fabric available daily!!! I love the sew alongs! Keep it up!

  36. My biggest problem is space. Fabrics are organized but all the space is occupied by future projects and kits. The hallway to garage is home to project tubs.
