I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. My biggest organizational challenge has to do with how to categorizing fabric. I start to by color then I change to theme, and so on. As a result, nothing ever gets organized.

  2. My biggest problem is space. I really need more shelf space, but along with that I need wall space for the new shelves. I hope to work on that after the new year.

  3. My biggest challenge is keeping things organized. I clean up my space after a project is done, but it goes down hill again when I start something new.

  4. So many fabric purchases without any forethought about a completed project. Now I have no idea how to sort it all out and put it back together!

  5. My problem is my sewing room starts off clean and organized but as I continue to make a quilt everything keeps getting pulled out it looks like my room is literally blew up with fabric and Notions by the time I’m done so I have to clean and organize after each project

  6. My biggest problem is, I don’t really have a sewing room, I sew in my living room, so I don’t have the area to organize it the way I really would like it to be. It don’t help having to many started projects and sometimes they get mixed up with each other. I put things in a storage bin, but not all of them are clear, so it makes it hard to figure out where I put what at times….lol

  7. My biggest problem with organization is sorting and putting away fabric when I finish a quilt. I end up with a pile of fabric. Some of it are true scrap basket bits, some are usable scraps, and some pieces are big enough to put away with other fabric. By the time I finish a quilt, I can hear the new fabric calling me to make it into a new quilt!!! And I immediately give in. Maybe I really do need a visit from the quilt patrol.

  8. My biggest problem (I think) is space. This is probably a cop-out, though, because I see people doing so much with so little space! I can’t wrap my head around how they do that. the 2nd issue is i’m plain messy and get side-tracked easily!

  9. My biggest organization problem is space. I don’t have an extra room right now so I’m using my bedroom. My babylock is set up in my bedroom and I have my fabrics in bins and small rolling carts…but when it’s time to cut a project I have to take my supplies to the kitchen. Ready to cut and my rotary cutter is still in bedroom! Ready to press and my iron and board are stuck in a closet so I set them up in kitchen also…by then I’m exhausted!

  10. Pat, I thoroughly enjoy your videos! My biggest organizational struggle is grouping my fabrics. By color? Pattern? Collection? Etc.

  11. My biggest problem is signing up for blocks of the month. I get the block cut out and have to go do something and never get back to it. Something else gets laid on top of it and it gets forgotten about. I want to finish them and keep caught up on current ones.

  12. Right now, it’s the fact that we just moved and the garage isn’t done yet so the sewing room is full of things that need to go in the garage. usually it is that I cannot make a decision about all the scraps.

  13. I have way more fabric than I will reasonably need for the rest of my life. BUT it is all organized by color (for the most part) except I do have separate collections of certain
fabrics so that they are together if I decide to do a single project with it.

  14. I wish I had more storage. So that it could be inside the house but not seen!!! My biggest wish is a new Janome 9400!!! My 6600 is I. The shop🙄🙄. Love you work!!!! Thanks, Lisa Searight

  15. My problem is my sewing room is also my office. I have lots of containers but no definite method of what goes in what

  16. I would definitely say my problem with organizing my sewing area is me 😂 I seriously lack the skill. It’s funny I’m a bookkeeper and at work I’m so organized but when I come home it’s like I left that skill at the office .

  17. My problem is we moved! I have a lot of UFOs! But I need to Organize and see what works best for me in my new space. Hopefully I’ll figure it out as well! I have additional space upstairs that’s full of fabric. I think I’ll organize it using comic book board. I’ll let ya know how that goes too!

  18. My biggest problem is too much stuff and not enough room and time. I quilt, knit, cross stitch, weave and spin fleece to make my own yarn. Darn. Never enough room for all my projects… And I like doing all of them! Oh well, just keep working on my organizational skills…

  19. My biggest problem is space for my sewing machine in a small apartment. So I have it on gliders and I can slide it in to the bedroom to sew and when I am done I glide it back into the small hallway between the bedroom and bathroom. It works! 🙂

  20. my biggest problem is fabric storage…seems like I always have a pile on my desk..it never goes away…I did the comic book boards…this has worked the best for me…but now the small pieces multiply…

  21. As with most people I have scraps and more scraps. I have started giving them to my neighbor’s church for the “craft ladies”. the love it and it gets them out of the house. i think one of my biggest proble is the tons of books that I have bought over the years that I find now that I don’t really use and I could definitely use the shelf. I also am a paper crater and all that stuff is also in mt craft room.

  22. My biggest problem is that I have to many projects to do and then I will go to work at Fabric Land I will have two more things on my list when I come home. Then I will take sit down and see which one needs to be done first, and away I go..

  23. My biggest problem is space so I utilized the closet in my sewing room and hung my fabric groups on thick plastic hangers I love being able to pull out a hanger and my fabric group is all together.

  24. My biggest problem is I have fabrics pulled or purchased and in bags and totes for a project that I may or may not get to so all my fabric is spoken for in a way. It means if I steal a piece then a project won’t be complete. It is a mess.

  25. My biggest problem with my quilting room is ,we down sized. All of my things are in an attic with pull downstairs.I move furniture to get there.I have to figure out storage in my new little room.

  26. My biggest problem is fabric storage. My stash has grown to the point where it has outgrown the storage space and I am seriously trying to not buy any fabric at all. Haha, who am I kidding. Who’s in for a trip to the quilt shop?

  27. My biggest problem is that we live in a small house, with small rooms. Now that my older kids have moved into their own lives, I have a small room to call my own. But it feels SO cluttered because it’s so small!

  28. I only have a small room for my sewing and I did have my home for sale to move out to California to be closer to my son but, the sale fell through and my only small spare room is full with boxes that have been packed. But I still keep buying fabric! Lol

  29. My biggest issue is organizing everything I own quilt related. I have lost multiple patterns and books because I have limited space and I keep putting more things in my quilt room. I buy faster than I can make.

  30. My problem is working on more than 1 project which tends to overcrowd my cutting/worktable. I tried to put each project in a basket or container but then other fabrics end up landing on top & before you know it my table is in one big mess. I know my solution is to work on one project at a time but with me in different groups I’m always multi-tasking and my projects seem to grow!

  31. Moved into new home trying to store everything in guest room. Closets, dresser, chiffarobe, it seems with every project I need to reorganize, and don’t always have time to. Need to figure out how to keep things organized.

  32. My biggest problem is ME!!! I start with full enthusiasm and then I see the enormity of the job and back it all goes, I must admit probably somewhat more organised but not completely, and then I leave it again for a very long time until it gets to me andi start eh process again.
