I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. My main organizational issue is that I have too much stuff (50 years of gathering) to fit in my current storage units! I need to get treat myself to a storage system that fits my needs.

  2. My biggest problem is – space. Things just keep following me home and I have real problems with letting things go once they’ve been brought in. I just did a redo of my fabric bins, and put sorted it all by color. I did have a stack to do something with. But it’s still on the floor in my room. I have now made it a goal to do something with that stack of fabrics.

  3. My biggest organizational issue is that I don’t have a separate area for my quilting. Right now it is done in my very small and crowded living room. Unfortunately I shop faster then I quilt, so my area is shrinking fast. I have decided to rectify this. I’m going tomorrow to pick out a She Shed. Thank-you, Pat Sloan love your page!

  4. My biggest problem is I don’t have enough shelves. Getting there slowly and someday it will all be organized. And I wished I had more time to quilt, maybe someday when I’m retired!@

  5. My problem is when I put something away I can never find it again. Right now I’m looking for my yardage to make my binding.

  6. Just saw your message. I have trouble keeping my fabrics for a specific quilt together. Seems like the stacks all run
Together or I lose the pattern and forget why I bought certain pieces of fabric.

  7. My biggest organization problem is sorting and storing pieces of leftover fabrics before I can cut them into squares and strips.

  8. My stash looks good, it’s my scraps I have a problem organizing. I don’t want to toss them, but I’m struggling with a good way to store them and keep them organized! Love your chats Pat 🙂

  9. Scraps, scraps and even more scraps. Goodness it’s like they just never stop. That’s my biggest organization problem. Usually it just gets thrown in this itty bitty tiny container. Ugh I really should update that thing to at least a bigger size. I’ll seriously have to spend hours ironing it all out cause I just shove it in there to make it all fit. There are scraps from every quilt or project I have made. One day I have plans to make a quilt for my self with them all but today is not that day. LOL. All joking aside though, it seriously needs some work. I even have binding scraps shoved in there 🙄.

  10. My biggest organization problem is I keep finding new projects to do and feel I have to do them right now and leave the ones that I was working on for the IF I pile!

  11. My biggest problem is keeping my fabric sorted for a prjoject for the future also all my books and patterns I print from the internet. I need another storage cabinet.

  12. It’s always a challenge to keep my sewing room organized. I just finished a good cleaning/purge/reorganization & it feels so good!

  13. My biggest organizational problem is bringing new items in all the time without having completed projects going out.

  14. I’m currently moving my sewing space so I feel like everything is my challenge right now. Just trying to get my fabric organized and downsize some projects I’ve lost interest in.

  15. My biggest problem is having little idea of what fabric I have. I’ve organized into see-through bins (which helps). I need to create and keep and inventory.

  16. My biggest problem is when I reorganize my stuff I can’t remember where put it..so it’s me going crazy looking in each cabinet over and over then couple days later it magically reappears!

  17. Too many projects at once. I have folders to put my printed patterns in so that helps but what to do with the piles of the projects themselves is a problem

  18. Hi, same old story here-too much stuff for my space! One day I will have cupboards for the stuff (I mean yummy fabrics! ) in my new Sewing/Quilting room. Thanks for your inspiration and a neat Giveaway!

  19. My biggest challenge is space, I have everything spread all over the house in nooks and crannies; I lose track of projects and fabric!

  20. My biggest organizational problem is keeping my project supplies in order. I work on a few projects at the same time and sometimes fabric or thread or the pattern goes missing!

  21. I have all kinds of problems with organization. Too many books. I have scraps in plastic shoe boxes some by color some not. If I’m looking for something pacific, I have to look in all the bins to find what I want. lol Then I find things I didn’t remember I had and let them out, for another mess. So my goal is to one day be really organized. Need to have bookshelves for books and magazines, And to have my scraps organized by color so when I need that color, I can find it. That is my goal.

  22. My biggest problem is space. Right now I do all my sewing in my dining room since i lost my sewing room and extra bedroom 18 years ago to a returning child. All my fabric is stored in my bedroom in bins. It gets old having to sort through them.

  23. My biggest problem is I don’t know where to start I put all the flannel together all the kids and baby prints together now I’m at a stand still do I sort by colors or by prints? I have Christmas, Halloween, patriotic

  24. My work room is for all of my crafts; quilting, knitting and crocheting, and cross stitch. My fabric stash is not extensive but I have trouble organizing the leftovers from finished projects, especially the scraps that can be used. This room needs to be painted so this will be a good time to reorganize.

  25. My biggest organization problems is that I want to save everything and when is time to make a quilt I pull so many different pieces and at the end I end up with a fabric and little pieces all over 🤦🏽‍♀️ What a mess.

  26. I have too many dust collectors…special things or little dishes. I love little plates and bowls. There isn’t room for fabric, so it’s all over the place!

  27. My biggest organizational problem are all of the non quilting stuff. The craft paper, tape, stickers, paint, canvas, etc…

  28. Pat, I redid my sewing room this summer only to put it back the way it was because I was more comfortable with it the old way!
My sewing supplies are taking over my craft storage area. I seriously need to redo my craft storage and add another shelf for my vintage sewing machines! Like you I need my sewing area clean and organized!
    Thank you Pat!

  29. I do not have a designated space for working because we are not finished with the inside of our house. I can’t wait to get my sewing room finished so I can feel normal again. LOL

  30. Hello Pat! You are doing a terrific job! I love being organized in my projects and I love closure on projects. However the biggest obstacle for me is actually remembering what I have on hand. I only purchase for what I need, but there is still always something left over. I then find myself with a lot of leftovers that could have been put to use if I could remember that I have them🙃.

  31. My biggest problem is organizing my scraps…I have too many… I’m not sure if I should cut them up into smaller uniform pieces or just leave them
