I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. MY BIGGEST PROBLEM IS THAT I HAVE SO MANY PROJECTS GOING AT ONCE THAT THEY ARE ALL OVER. I TRY TO KEEP EACH PROJECT IN A BOX OR BASKET, BUT I AM STILL LOOKING FOR WHAT I NEED WHEN I SWITCH PROJECTS. I GUESS IT IS GOOD THAT I CAN WORK IN A MESS.L

  2. My biggest problem is I don’t have a sewing space outside of the dining room table! I have temporarily taken over the spare bedroom, but that’s not the best and it still means I have no storage space to speak of. Everything ends up plastic totes, which isn’t terrible but not ideal. 😕

  3. Hi Pat! I just this week was able to unpack all my fabric and put it in my little “new” sewing room. As it has been in storage for past six years! So, I’m honestly not sure what my biggest challenge will be with organizing!? I do have several projects to in different stages. I’m interested in how I will decided what to do next?! All the best! 😊

  4. My biggest problem is organizing my fabrics. I’ve sorted but then was able to move to a larger room that now newer fans are in bigger room and older fans are in smaller room but I have to dig and make more mess. Of course I find fans I forgot about and leave a larger mess. I need hubby to go away for a week so I can pull everything out and reorganize

  5. I’m really pretty organized, I can’t work in a mess because I get overwhelmed. Items that I don’t use that often get lost. They have a designated box or container, but where is it? Things like my elastic, snaps, tape measures, rotary blades and so on. I think I need to make a notebook with locations in it. LOL

  6. I too use multiple rooms for crafting. My biggest challenge is bigger pieces of fabric currently undesignated for anything but too special to just give away.

  7. I’m a neat freak at everything but my fabric. There’s not room to display it, so it gets put in the closet in boxes. So I have to practically pull it all out to see what I have . working on organizing them in containers.

  8. My biggest organizational problem is storing my scraps. I have totes full of all sizes. I tried to sort by colours, seasonal, but that didn’t last long. I need to organize myself and also not be afraid to get rid of small scraps…keep thinking I’ll do a postage stamp or string quilt. I need more space and another cupboard!!

  9. Fabric scraps are my organizational problem. I just started quilting less than two years ago, and my zip bags/grocery bags are Nottt working well! 😉 Thanks Pat for all the fun!

  10. My main issue is storage space. I only have the space around my sewing machine and behind. At least all my books and patterns are in a bookcase nearby.

  11. My biggest organizational problem is … not enough time free of kids, second to that is I don’t know how to organize with what I have available. I want to organize, but when I get started I feel lost. I want more drawers and tubs!

  12. My biggest issue is space. Since we moved last spring my sewing and cutting areas had to be split up because of the space. So when I need any big cutting done I have to go to the “cutting”room but then I end up leaving my rulers or rotor cutter in there and realize I need those items in the sewing areas. Gets quite frustrating. My other big issue is what to do with scraps! How do I sort them or even is each piece I cut off scrap! I hate wasting any fabric I cut!!

  13. My biggest issue is too many UFO’s cluttering everything up. I really let them hang around too long then buy something new and have no place for it. I have started a new rule…I don’t start a new project until I have finished an old one and have limited my new purchases until I have space for it.

  14. My biggest organizational issues is working on multiple quilt projects and frankly not having the right kind of space to keep them organized/ stored until I finish. Frequently they end up lying around my sewing room which gets in the way of production. I need to re-evaluate my space like you’re doing Pat!

  15. My biggest problem is storage. My room is in the basement in the 4th bedroom. I need more shelving for books and fabric.

  16. My biggest organising problem is my projects on the go ,they sit all over the tables and chairs I think I’m going to have to get my self a couple of those trollies I can wheel around and place my projects I’m working on in them

  17. I live in a two bedroom apartment. I do not put nails in the wall so I have no wall space. Using glue strips only work for a short time before faling to the floor!

  18. My difficulty is physical limitations. I truly need to reorganize my room. Hoping one day my bff will come to assist me.

  19. My biggest problem is too little space for too many craft hobbies. Quilting is my newest favorite. Fabric and patterns are very addicting.

  20. My biggest organizational problem is getting started I find myself just moving stuff from one spot to another and back again.

  21. My organization problem is that I used to have a room for my quilting and everything had a place (I filled the walk in closet too). I have since moved to an apartment and just don’t have the space to keep things. When I lost all of the things from my old quilt room upon the move (I had to leave everything behind) I have never figured out how to have a “quilting” space in an apartment.

  22. My biggest problem is deciding how I want to start, what I want to use for storage and getting it going!! I have a big closet in my sewing room however it doesn’t have a light for the time being and no shelving system. So do I want to put in shelves, or go with rolling carts, or something else compleyely…so I live in somewhat of organized chaos in my room for now.

  23. My biggest problem is deciding how to sort fabric. By color, by project I think I will use it for, by batiks, line, etc. However I start organizing I end up rummaging and making a mess. My Christmas is sorted out and separated to reds, blues, greens, crossovers and plaids/stripes. Everything else is a mess.

  24. I have trouble with keeping track of my rulers and other “gadgets” ready to use. I have seen some good ideas in comments from others. Just haven’t had time to do it.

  25. My biggest organizational problem is falling in love with all the fabric I see others using and having to have it!! I try to refrain but patterns, fabrics, pincushions keep following me into my studio!! Help!! 😉

  26. Biggest problem is the fabrics I want them all nice and neat and they just go every where. Plus trying to organize and go they fabric then I begin to realize what a hoarder I am and what projects I can do with this fabric or that fabric sit it aside to locate the pattern then I have piles of to do all over the couch, table desk. Oh my. Just to organize at all is a fun chore. My friends must worry when I say I need at least two weeks to organize my sewing / living room. Too funny. Thanks for sharing.

  27. My room is only 10×10 and mu sewing stuff takes up about 8×8. Doesn’t leave much room but I make it work. Have to be super-organized.

  28. My biggest problem is fabric scraps. I do cut some up for leader ended projects. Bigger pieces are kept in 2 gallon bags for scrappy projects.

  29. My biggest problem is space. I have one corner in my bedroom for my cutting table and sewing machine. My bins and bins of fabric, projects, batting are stacked in closet and another corner of the room. Sometimes I feel like a hoarder.

  30. My biggest struggle is sharing my happy, little quilting room with my adult daughter who is also an avid quilter. The joy of creating together in the same space overrides any struggle though! It’s a dream come true to share a passion with a grown child.

  31. My biggest organization struggle is space! We are soon going to have a new house with a dedicated room for sewing- hoping then I’ll have the space! Thanks, Pat!

  32. My biggest problem is figuring out how to mark containers and such so that I know what’s in them without having to go through every one looking for a specific item.

  33. My biggest organization problem is space. I went from a basement sewing room to a small bedroom sewing room. My fabric is in bins, drawers and stacked bins in closets. I have a real organizational challenge. LOL

  34. My biggest problem is a lack of organization of my fabric. This weekend I am sorting and regrouping into color families, sew excited!

  35. My biggest problem is the size of my space and how to utilize it to its fullest potential. I reorganized it at least three times this year and your post inspired me to do it again today!

  36. Keeping my scraps organized in a way that will make me want to go through and use them. Right now they’re in a jumble semi-separated by size in plastic bags stuffed in my studio closet. Not exactly conducive to creativity!

  37. My biggest problem is that I have tried to fit too many different crafts into one small room. Sometimes I quilt, sometimes I paint, sometimes I work on genealogy, scanning old pictures into computer files. I know where everything is, but it looks like chaos to anyone else.

  38. My biggest problem is thinking I can make each ufo I run across while trying to organize….I really start to many projects…I am trying this week to organize old projects and decide if I want ,will finish it or just let it go…but you inspired me sew much…I am going to get better at this…Dr orders fir real….thanks fir all your encouragement ✂️✂️✂️

  39. My biggest problem is storing bits and pieces of steam a seam or fusible web, I can’t throw out any piece over 2″.I don’t want to fold it and rolling doesn’t work with little pieces. Arrrgh it is all over the place in my sewing room.
