Organizing my Studio Space, want to see…psst.. giveaway at the end

I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. My biggest problem is space. I live in a very little house so stage is an issue. I can only but what I will use in a very reasonable time frame. The good news, while I don’t have a big stash I also am not winding up with fabric that will never be used.

  2. I love your bins for storage. I have several different containers but I keep out growing the bins I have and need more.

  3. My biggest problem, short of space. My sewing is spread out in my dining room. And keeping my supplies organized. Lol, I forget I have something or cant find it, buy another, then I have 3!!

  4. My biggest organizing problem is distraction! I start in one place, get sidetracked by something else, and find myself running around in circles trying to deal with everything at once. I need to learn to focus!

  5. Storing all my fabric in an easy to see what I have way. More fabric than I thought I would ever have and it’s exploding all over my sewing space.

  6. Well hello All you quilters, and a special hello to you Pat!
I just returned from the Paducah APQS show and brought back a brand new machine, so I too, and trying to sort and reorganized my room. Boy, I found a couple of smaller projects that I set aside and just forgot 🙁 so I am creating a spot just for Work in Progress. I took a box from a recent shopping trip and covered it with contact paper. It’ll do for now, but I need to find other creative ways to organize all my projects in progress so I don’t waste any time sorting through piles of fabric! You have so many wonderful ideas! I hope you don’t mind if I take a few and put them into my room???

  7. I use a dresser for my ironing table. (That way I also have storage) I need a (not really new one) better one. The one I have is getting kinda old but it has been well loved.

  8. Organization has always been a weak spot for me. I just moved and have a very good size sewing, but it is so disorganized. I have started! Surprisingly I have always kept my scrap fabric organized by color and do stay on top of it.

  9. I biggest problem is having too much fabric (did I say that?)… and too little space. Or maybe I have too many stamps… ugh.

  10. My biggest organizational problem is how to deal with left over pieces of fabric after I’ve completed a project. I’m a scrap lover and hate to throw away good bits & pieces of fabric that I could use in a scrappy quilt, but they always end up in a box or bin and never find their way into a more manageable state! I need help!

  11. My biggest storage issue is my fat quarters. I have my larger pieces of fabric (one yard or more) all folded the same way, and sizes marked, very neat and tidy. But my fat quarters are a mes!!

  12. My biggest organizational problem is that I have large piles of fabric that need to be put away, having been auditioned and used in or rejected from a recent project. I have a sorting system but it could be better.

  13. Pat, my biggest organization issue is organizing patterns and project ideas. Once I put the pattern away, I can lose track of my plan for my next project! Clearly, I’m an out-of-sight, out-of-mind kind of organizer. I’m doing better now that I’m using my iPad to make lists of current and planned projects. Yea! A simple solution, but it took me awhile to figure that out 😂

  14. My biggest organizational problem is finding a space for all my tools so that they are easily accessible when I’m working on a project. I wish I had more wall space, so I could just hang them up. Currently the tools are in boxes in drawers or cabinets.

  15. We are moving into a new home in a few weeks. I will have a dedicated sewing room for the first time. I am excited to get it set up!

  16. My biggest organizational problem is putting fabrics away after I’ve auditioned them for a project and either rejected them or used them and am done. I have huge piles of fabric that need putting away. I also think the way I’ve stored fabrics could be improved but I’m not sure how to change it.

  17. I was flooded last year and when I moved back into my house, I changed which room was my sewing room. So now I need organizational ideas to help me get started storing all my stuff!

  18. My biggest organizational problem is not having enough time in the day to work and or finish projects! If I had more time than I could spend it putting material into totes color coded. Being a nurse I use the time I have off for sewing (my therapy)!

  19. I am wishing for a larger craft room. As that is not happening, I will need to organize and get rid of things I will not immediately use.

  20. I initially thought my organizational problem was my furniture layout. While it does need to be rearranged my BIGGEST problem is where to put all the tools—those I use regularly and those I use less frequently. I have the feeling that I’ll keep rearranging these items for some time. Pat, thanks so much for all you do for us. I especially enjoy your video visits and podcasts.

  21. My biggest problem is too many projects other than quilting in my craft room. Also have too many quilting projects started. Lots of tops done; need to learn to finish quilts.
    Having fun!!

  22. My biggest organization problem is trying to squish so much into a very small room. I could use a much bigger storage for my fabric especially. I tend to forget what I have and then it is a struggle so much so that I feel like I can’t get anything at all done. I wish my room was much much bigger!

  23. My biggest problem is not completely what I start before I start something new. I have my UFO’s in bins now, but need to make a priority list!

  24. Our home lacks storage space.I need a space to store holiday items and off season clothing to have a dedicated sewing room. We lack a basement and attic, too.

  25. My biggest challenge is too little space for all the stuff I have. Fabric spills out into every other room of the house, including the bathrooms! I am salivating over another sewing machine and a longarm but will have to control myself until I’ve contained all the fabric LOL!

  26. My biggest problem with organization is simply keeping things organized. I can do a great job of getting things in order – but then I pull out project after project to work on. I can’t work on just one thing at once. Then, when new fabrics are found and new projects are planned, it is time to start all over again! Maybe what I really need is just time to finish something (without interruptions)!

  27. My biggest organization problem is good use of the space that I do have. It seems that I don’t have the right furniture to keep all of my sewing materials organized.

  28. We moved into a new home after 19 years in our other home, so my biggest challenge is getting through all th stuff I accumulated over 19 years.

  29. Mine is getting everything in one room. In June my son graduated high school. The day of his party rain was forecast so a few days before we took everything out of the room to put tables and chairs in. It is September and I have barely put things back. I do have my sewing machine set up but projects and notions are still hidden. Someday soon hopefully I will get it all back together.

  30. My biggest organizational problem is probably my cutting station. All things that enter my sewing space usually end up landing on it. Obviously I periodically have to clean it off to use the cutting mat but sometimes the piles end up back on the cutting table. Ugh! I only use a couple of favorite rulers but they’re usually hard to find … somewhere under all this mess!

  31. I do not have enough space!! My sewing room is only 10′ x 11′. It has my machine in a cabinet, a large cutting/storage table, a bookshelf, an ironing board, a small corner selving for mostly decoration stuff, and two units that hold 6 12″ x 12″ storage containers for projects. Please I have knitting!
