Well this is a FUN day! Not one but TWO giveaways and the last block of Home Town Charms!
For our final HomeTown Charms block we come together to do good work. We end the blocks with Charity. It is the cornerstone of our communities. Neighbors helping neighbors in so many ways. It might be an ongoing project, or fundraising for a very specific need. Working together to do good is an incredible thing we as humans can be part of.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** their charity and fundraiser š
- Kendall – I helped fundraise to get a church bell tower completed after being missing for 100 years, we also got bells for the tower from a church in England that was lost to fire, for example)
- Laura – My hometown now, Bellefontaine (French for beautiful spring) is being revitalized. By a group of entrepreneurs called, Small Nation. Our town has become a standard for other towns who are now restoring their towns. Small Nation has basically gone through gutted each building/business and restored it back to its original beauty. Old dilapidated buildings have been saved. And Our town has the smallest street (McKinley St) in America and the first concrete street in America (court st) It was a test street.
- Suzanne – Like many quilters, I pitch in with my guilds ā community quiltsā. Over the years Iāve made tops and now quilt for the group. They supply quilts to our local childrens homes , womens shelter, local sheriff and fire departments emergency response teams. I also quilt for a group in neighboring Connecticut called Quilts that Care. They supply quilts to cancer patients in treatment and in hospice. For over 30 years I have been a āfriendā to my local library.
- Barbara – My favorite charity currently is The Normady Project. Itās a organization created to help women who have escaped human trafficking, where they can learn to live independently through mentoring, support and encouragement. In addition, on-site classes are offered in areas of trauma recovery, healthy boundaries, life skills, employment skills, parenting skills, culinary skills, exercise and more.
- Carrie G – Both my daughter and I are Girl Scouts. We support our local council and service units efforts which not only empower young woman, but teaches them the importance of community service. Even my son benefited from his sister being a Scout for 13 years as he modeled what she learned through the organization.
- Kathy – Many of the groups I belong to do a Charity project each year. Over the years I have made quilts for preemie beds, lap quilts for Hospice, quilts for the woman's shelter, hats, scarves, and washcloths for the homeless. I also volunteer my time with several local organizations.
- Brenda -Growing up my mom taught me that no matter how bad you think you have it thereās always someone else that is having an even harder time. Giving and helping others itās a good thing.
Alzheimerās research I made 36 Art quilts which were auctioned and proceeds went to research. Pretty Chemo caps with machine embroidery made and donated to local Cancer treatment center. I even donated my hair minimum 10ā more than once. For cancer wigs that are provided free to patients. Crochet the tiniest hats & booties for our NICU. And also for theMarch of dimes preemie project. Making tiny quilts & blankets. Just the size of a legal envelope! Helps those fragile babies look more like real babies and gives comfort to the families. Just some of my ways to give to others
- Dorris – The quilt group I am in donates quilts to Quilts of valor, Child Advocacy, and Family Promise (a group for homeless or near homeless families with children in our county). There are only 8 of us on a regular basis and we have made and donated over 50 quilts so far this year. I do the quilting on a large percentage of the quilts in addition to doing my own.

My favorite holiday memory was going to Grandma's for Christmas Eve dinner. She would make ornaments throughout the year and her tree would be filled with her handcrafts. At the end of the evening we could select a new ornament to take home and put in our own Christmas stash. My favorite tradition is the sharing of blessings each person had during the year. Everyone at the table tells what they are grateful for.
My favorite holiday tradition is cutting our tree at the tree farm in Sykesville, Maryland.We’ve been going to the same farm for over 40 years and our family has grown up with the farm. Now, we share the tree farm with our grandchildren. My birthday is Dec. 7, so we always decorate the tree around my birthday. It may be cold and blustery in Maryland, but we love the December holidays and celebrations!
My favorite holiday is when family can gat together which is really hard these days. So when we do get together I enjoy the time. My favorite sweet is anything made with cream cheese!!! Happy Thanksgiving !!
My favorite holiday cookie is actually preacher cookies. Our daughter and daughter in law make many varieties of Christmas goodies. However, the preacher cookie is still my fav. One of the reasons is because my 4-year-old grandson calls them “Creature cookies.” He could not pronounce the p. I smile every time I think of them.
Pumpkin or squash pie! My mother’s pumpkin pie always was different from others. I was probably married & had kids before I found out that she actually was making squash pie. It is seasoned differently. ( One Pie brand of canned squash is still made but I can only find it in New England or by ordering from The Vermont Store).

My favorite tradition is the joy of family- sharing the meals, the church services, the decorations, and the shopping. I wish family had a lot of time off between Thanksgiving & New Years so we could celebrate for the whole time.
My favorite holiday tradition is also my favorite holiday treat!! My Grandmother’s cookie – Party Cookies. I make many dozens of cut out cookies, invite friends & family over and decorate them. Not only do I make the cookies for Christmas, but for all holodays!! My kid’s teachers LOVED when I was their Room Mom – they knew I would make as many cookies as they needed & decorating them was always a part of the class party!!
My favorite holiday tradition for Thanksgiving is the traditional turkey and dressing meal eaten with family. For Christmas, besides the above, it’s the Jello Ribbon Salad that my Mom started making at Christmas when we were kids. Mom is no longer able to do so but we try to continue the tradition.
Hello Pat! My favorite holiday traditions were breakfast Christmas morning with my family and one of my girlfriends. She never married, doesn’t have children and we have been friends since second grade. I’m pushing 70, you do the math! Long time! She brought a lot of fun to our family over the years and was like a second mother for our 2 kids. My husband pitched in with the cooking too. We would make homemade applesauce in September and freeze in containers. The cold weather at Christmas always made hot applesauce over homemade biscuits with cinnamon sprinkled on top a yummy treat. Along with that, we fried oysters, baked ham, and scrambled eggs. It was a wonderful time in our lives. Although the kids are grown not living close, my friend passed away many years ago, we still carry on the tradition, just a smaller version. Still yummy as ever, talk about many happy memories.
My favorite holiday tradition is to pull out all my holiday family photos. It allows all of my children and grandchildren to reminisce about holidays past and have a laugh too!

My favorite tradition was Christmas Eve: mom would make a fancy dinner and use the good china (lots of scandinavian influence foods, potato sausage and fruit soup, scalloped oysters, ham, scalloped potatoes..) My father was a Lutheran minister and when we finally got home after the candlelight service we would get to open presents.
My favorite holiday sweet is Haystacks or we always called them Chow Mien Clusters – melted chocolate and butterscotch chips over chopped cashews and chow mien noodles – the perfect mix of chocolate and salty.

My favourite holiday treat is Yulecake, a Scandinavian fruit bread that my mother always made. It is delicious toasted and buttered. The wee bit of cardamom in it makes it special!

My favorite holiday tradition is making candy cane cookies with the kids in my life. I still have adult children of friends who used to come over or kids that I used to babysit wanting the recipe so they can do it with their children. The cookie dough is almond and you make a powdered sugar icing to put on top and then dip the wet icing and crushed up candy cane. They are just the best! My mom found it you know women’s magazine when we were kids.

My favorite Holiday Tradition is decorating for Christmas on my birthday, the 1st…..then when our daughter was born on the 3rd, we decorated on her birthday. Now that she is married with a family of her own, we decorate on my day, again!
Our favorite tradition now that our family is grown including married grandchildren is our Christmas Eve dinner. We gather together at one of our homes for a scrumptious dinner to which each family has contributed. Oh the desserts!! So yummy! Then we open gifts. We have a name draw to keep it easy on everyone. Such a fun time of yummy eating, giving and receiving gifts and best of all the wonderful hugs and tons of shared love!
My favorite holiday treat is my mommaās fruit cake. Not your usual with lots of candied fruit. This cake has only raisins and wonderful spices and molasses. This is a very old recipe that was made for the dry farmers to take with them for their lunch. Hearty to get them through the day! So very good! Happy holidays to everyone!

For years our family had one box, a clothing gift box with Mickey on it, that was passed from person to person. Silly really to see who got the box that year. That Mickey saw a lot of Christmases.
My favorite holiday tradition is watching Bass and Rankin’s “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer”. I was 13 when it premiered, and couldn’t wait for it to be broadcast again the following year. As far as I was concerned, it was magical.

Putting up the tree while a Christmas movie is playing and having sugar cookies and hot cocoa. There are so many little traditions thought that or family does. Let’s not forget hiding the pickle ornament and then whichever childspits it first gets to start the gift giving.

We have celebrated for 30 plus years with 2 other families for a
FriendsThanksgiving on Friday. The gatherings have grown to now include our children’s spouses and children, neighbors and friends. After missing 2 years due to Covid, the Friends Thanksgiving will happen this year, but my husband and I will not be attending. I just recovered from Covid and he must of got it from me because he is now has it.

I don’t remember if I already said or not! Honestly, I really love them all, and we have many! Probably baking my huge family’s favorite goodies!
My favorite tradition is to make cookie and candy for Christmas. My favorite candy is molasses taffy.
Too many favorite sweet holiday traditions to choose from – Momās homemade from scratch coconut cake, yep started with a whole coconut, grated by hand!! Or her orange cake again made from scratch, grated orange rind – fingers are bleeding by now š. Or the cocoa cookies I called black cookies when I was little, with raisins. I have yet to make these come out like hers and Iām 75. But Iām going with the orange as the best.
There so many holiday traditions that I love, I just can’t pick one. But I do love our church’s Christmas eve service, then going home, eating snacks and being surrounded by family and friends!

My favorite Thanksgiving tradition is after our family eats lunch and discusses what we are grateful for and our blessings for the year, we all watch a movie and by the middle of the movie we are all napping. Lol. After our nap we put up the Christmas tree and all decorate it together telling funny stories about years gone by.

Favorite holiday tradition is shopping with my daughter on Friday after Thanksgiving. Love the 2-hr drive to our destination with all the catching up talk. We have a blast and are wore out by end of day.
