For our final HomeTown Charms block we come together to do good work. We end the blocks with Charity. It is the cornerstone of our communities. Neighbors helping neighbors in so many ways. It might be an ongoing project, or fundraising for a very specific need. Working together to do good is an incredible thing we as humans can be part of.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** their charity and fundraiser đ
- Kendall – I helped fundraise to get a church bell tower completed after being missing for 100 years, we also got bells for the tower from a church in England that was lost to fire, for example)
- Laura – My hometown now, Bellefontaine (French for beautiful spring) is being revitalized. By a group of entrepreneurs called, Small Nation. Our town has become a standard for other towns who are now restoring their towns. Small Nation has basically gone through gutted each building/business and restored it back to its original beauty. Old dilapidated buildings have been saved. And Our town has the smallest street (McKinley St) in America and the first concrete street in America (court st) It was a test street.
- Suzanne – Like many quilters, I pitch in with my guilds â community quiltsâ. Over the years Iâve made tops and now quilt for the group. They supply quilts to our local childrens homes , womens shelter, local sheriff and fire departments emergency response teams. I also quilt for a group in neighboring Connecticut called Quilts that Care. They supply quilts to cancer patients in treatment and in hospice. For over 30 years I have been a âfriendâ to my local library.
- Barbara – My favorite charity currently is The Normady Project. Itâs a organization created to help women who have escaped human trafficking, where they can learn to live independently through mentoring, support and encouragement. In addition, on-site classes are offered in areas of trauma recovery, healthy boundaries, life skills, employment skills, parenting skills, culinary skills, exercise and more.
- Carrie G – Both my daughter and I are Girl Scouts. We support our local council and service units efforts which not only empower young woman, but teaches them the importance of community service. Even my son benefited from his sister being a Scout for 13 years as he modeled what she learned through the organization.
- Kathy – Many of the groups I belong to do a Charity project each year. Over the years I have made quilts for preemie beds, lap quilts for Hospice, quilts for the woman's shelter, hats, scarves, and washcloths for the homeless. I also volunteer my time with several local organizations.
- Brenda -Growing up my mom taught me that no matter how bad you think you have it thereâs always someone else that is having an even harder time. Giving and helping others itâs a good thing.
Alzheimerâs research I made 36 Art quilts which were auctioned and proceeds went to research. Pretty Chemo caps with machine embroidery made and donated to local Cancer treatment center. I even donated my hair minimum 10â more than once. For cancer wigs that are provided free to patients. Crochet the tiniest hats & booties for our NICU. And also for theMarch of dimes preemie project. Making tiny quilts & blankets. Just the size of a legal envelope! Helps those fragile babies look more like real babies and gives comfort to the families. Just some of my ways to give to others
- Dorris – The quilt group I am in donates quilts to Quilts of valor, Child Advocacy, and Family Promise (a group for homeless or near homeless families with children in our county). There are only 8 of us on a regular basis and we have made and donated over 50 quilts so far this year. I do the quilting on a large percentage of the quilts in addition to doing my own.

My favorite holiday memory was going to Grandma's for Christmas Eve dinner. She would make ornaments throughout the year and her tree would be filled with her handcrafts. At the end of the evening we could select a new ornament to take home and put in our own Christmas stash. I love the tradition of staying in on a cold winters day making delectable, sweet treats, filling the house with all the wonderful aromas of cookies, cakes and candies.
I think my favorite holiday treat is fudge with lots of walnuts. It reminds me of my childhood, and because itâs made almost exclusively at Christmas time itâs a real treat. My orange cranberry oatmeal cookies are a close second; I just love the combination of flavors.
The holidays are all about baking! When I was young my mother would let us kids pick out whatever we wanted to bake for Christmas out of the many cookbooks she had. Sheâd then make a list of all the ingredients we needed and go grocery shopping. Some years we picked out new recipes and some years was our favourites. Such fun memories!
My favorite Holiday Tradition is preparing fleece blankets for my grandchildren to tie and give away to classmates or church friends who are not as fortunate as my grands are. They all sit around on the floor and work on each blanket together tying the edges and have a fun time visiting with each other!
My favorite holiday sweet would HAVE to be chocolate chip cookies. Not very âholidayishâ but nothing is better than a thick, soft delicious chocolate chip cookie! And I hear at Christmas they have no calories, so I am all in!
My favorite holiday tradition…going to church on Christmas Eve with my children and coming home and having âparty.â Our familyâs take on a party buffet!! Always have Christmas punch!!
My favorite Holiday Tradition is having the Christmas Eve Fish Feast. My mother was from Italy and this is the tradition. All kinds of fish and seafood, the midnight mass. Even though my mom passed away, we still keep the tradition even though some family members are far away and some in the military. Nowadays with Instagram and Facebook we can share it with each other.
My favorite holiday tradition is putting up the tree with ornaments that have special meanings for me and our kids. Putting up the tree is hard and not my fav thing to do (like putting my Christmas wallhangings up first to get me in the mood) but it brings the best memories!
My favorite holiday tradition is the get together at my brothers on Christmas eve. We all bring something to share. My favorite sweet is Dutch Letter Bars made with almond paste delicious!
My favorite holiday tradition is putting my âall pinkâ Christmas tree on the table near my front door. The ornaments are pink and some are over 40 years old. I add to it every year and as the tree is only about 3 feet tall, itâs pretty full! Itâs the first thing people see when they arrive and always brings a smile.

One of our favorite family traditions for sweets is gathering together the week prior to Christmas to make HUGE gift bags of homemade Christmas cookies together.

My favourite holiday tradition was started when I was very young. On Christmas Eve I was allowed to open ONE gift, which was always new pyjamas from our dog! I carried on this tradition with my own children; our dogs did some great pyjama shopping!

My favorite family tradition is baking all kinds of cookies and sharing them in tins to family & friends. One year I gave my big brother his favorite yummy treat Krispy Bars in multiple flavors and when I delivered them to him he told his wife these are all mine. Our grandmother Miller use to make the original flavor for us when we were young kids.
My favorite holiday sweet – hmm. Well, years ago I would have said my children – but they’re grown long since and have their own children. Since we live far apart I don’t see them usually on holidays now. So, in the dessert category of sweets, I guess pecan pie would be my favorite sweet. I usually make it – this year I am trying pecan pie bars instead to take to our neighbors’ – they always invite us for holiday dinners (best neighbors ever!) and there are usually multiple desserts – this way folks can sample more than one!
Our adult son, who has special needs, makes Christmas extra special. He has such joy and exuberance opening his gifts on Christmas morning. It warms our hearts to see him so excited and pleased with each gift he receives.

Our favorite holiday sweet is our family tradition. My moms homemade fudge recipe that every family member has but no one can make it At least thatâs their excuse So I am the only person that can make it so that is what everyone gets for Christmas. Iâve made up to 7 batches some years. Itâs exhausting but very rewarding to know itâs all my people think about all year and look forward to at years end holidays. I even have my moms glass platter that is used for making the fudge on. But THAT is truly my treasure!

My favorite holiday sweet is almost anything with chocolate AND pizzelles. I bought a pizzelle iron 40 years ago and use it every year. One year, my granddaughter won champion cookie at the county fair with our recipe.
We build a fire in the fireplace every day of the Christmas break in the evening, sometimes in the morning. It’s fun time to sit around, drink coffee, and visit or play games.

My favorite tradition has changed as kids grew and we became grandparents. We still have High School and college and working grandkids come for Thanksgiving and they stay the night. Usualy Christmas sugar cookies are made and some type of gift is made for mom, usually a sewing gift or jar recipes to bake later as go to Gifts. I love the sugar cookies and always have to limit how many I eat. Lol. Love the give aways even when I donât win, so fun to hear who does.

My favorite time of year is Christmas! I enjoy everything about it. The snow, the tree. the family time get together, the food. The true meaning of Christmas as well. I have bought about every book you have announced and when you announced this one this morning I got excited. We live in a community that has an annual golf cart parade. We decorate our golf cart every year with a different theme (this year will be a gingerbread house). Then we pile the grandkids and drive through the community to see all the decorated houses. The neighbors come out and line the streets and afterwards we take the kids to see Santa at our tennis courts. There we have hot chocolate and cookies. Itâs great fun!!
My favorite traction is oyster stew at grandmaâs, now it is a memory as grandma is now gone. But should I ever host the gathering it would be on the menu!

Through the years I have bought or made a new ornament each year – many times representing something that took place that you – like trips abroad. I also made or bought ornaments for each of my three boys every year and when they got married, they took these ornaments for their own trees.

My favorite holiday treats are the 2 breads I make every year. 1st, Christmas Bread. It’s a homemade bread with the candied fruit in it, along with the spice cardamon. To me, cardamom smells like Christmas. The second bread is, Gift of the Magic bread. Its a quick bread that it chock full of good things, bananas, Mandarin oranges, chocolate chips, coconut,maraschino cherries and more. Yummy
Our family started a tradition over 30 years ago. While living in Massachusetts we would either cut or purchase a live tree, make a cut(slice) from the bottom of the tree prior to putting it in the stand, mark the year, address(we moved a lot) &sometimes type of tree! Now all of our sons and their families do the same!
