For our final HomeTown Charms block we come together to do good work. We end the blocks with Charity. It is the cornerstone of our communities. Neighbors helping neighbors in so many ways. It might be an ongoing project, or fundraising for a very specific need. Working together to do good is an incredible thing we as humans can be part of.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** their charity and fundraiser đ
- Kendall – I helped fundraise to get a church bell tower completed after being missing for 100 years, we also got bells for the tower from a church in England that was lost to fire, for example)
- Laura – My hometown now, Bellefontaine (French for beautiful spring) is being revitalized. By a group of entrepreneurs called, Small Nation. Our town has become a standard for other towns who are now restoring their towns. Small Nation has basically gone through gutted each building/business and restored it back to its original beauty. Old dilapidated buildings have been saved. And Our town has the smallest street (McKinley St) in America and the first concrete street in America (court st) It was a test street.
- Suzanne – Like many quilters, I pitch in with my guilds â community quiltsâ. Over the years Iâve made tops and now quilt for the group. They supply quilts to our local childrens homes , womens shelter, local sheriff and fire departments emergency response teams. I also quilt for a group in neighboring Connecticut called Quilts that Care. They supply quilts to cancer patients in treatment and in hospice. For over 30 years I have been a âfriendâ to my local library.
- Barbara – My favorite charity currently is The Normady Project. Itâs a organization created to help women who have escaped human trafficking, where they can learn to live independently through mentoring, support and encouragement. In addition, on-site classes are offered in areas of trauma recovery, healthy boundaries, life skills, employment skills, parenting skills, culinary skills, exercise and more.
- Carrie G – Both my daughter and I are Girl Scouts. We support our local council and service units efforts which not only empower young woman, but teaches them the importance of community service. Even my son benefited from his sister being a Scout for 13 years as he modeled what she learned through the organization.
- Kathy – Many of the groups I belong to do a Charity project each year. Over the years I have made quilts for preemie beds, lap quilts for Hospice, quilts for the woman's shelter, hats, scarves, and washcloths for the homeless. I also volunteer my time with several local organizations.
- Brenda -Growing up my mom taught me that no matter how bad you think you have it thereâs always someone else that is having an even harder time. Giving and helping others itâs a good thing.
Alzheimerâs research I made 36 Art quilts which were auctioned and proceeds went to research. Pretty Chemo caps with machine embroidery made and donated to local Cancer treatment center. I even donated my hair minimum 10â more than once. For cancer wigs that are provided free to patients. Crochet the tiniest hats & booties for our NICU. And also for theMarch of dimes preemie project. Making tiny quilts & blankets. Just the size of a legal envelope! Helps those fragile babies look more like real babies and gives comfort to the families. Just some of my ways to give to others
- Dorris – The quilt group I am in donates quilts to Quilts of valor, Child Advocacy, and Family Promise (a group for homeless or near homeless families with children in our county). There are only 8 of us on a regular basis and we have made and donated over 50 quilts so far this year. I do the quilting on a large percentage of the quilts in addition to doing my own.

My favorite holiday memory was going to Grandma's for Christmas Eve dinner. She would make ornaments throughout the year and her tree would be filled with her handcrafts. At the end of the evening we could select a new ornament to take home and put in our own Christmas stash. Our favorite holiday tradition is going to my youngest daughter’s house and seeing everyone’s joy at being together.
My favorite holiday sweet is chocolate fudge.
We start the holiday season with making gingerbread houses with our grandchildren. It includes parents, aunt & uncles & grandchildren. Adults are paired with child.
Prior to Covid, whoever was off on Xmas eve morning, meet at a restuarant for breakfast. Our extended family included many who have jobs that require them to work holidays, and this was a way that many could still celebrate with family but had to work holiday shifts. Prior to Covid, only cancelled one time in 40 years due to a huge snowstorm.
Fingers crossed we can resume the Xmas Eve breakfast tradition next year.
I have two favorites. The first is a true German Stollen. It is not a “fruit cake” but more like a bread with raisins, almonds, and some holiday candied fruits. I have my Grandmothers recipe, written in German! The second is, amazingly, Lebkuchen cookies!!! When I was young, our relatives who still lived in Germany would send us a wonderful box FULL of German Christmas treats. My favorite was the dark chocolate covered Lebkuchen cookies. Sadly, my relatives are no longer with us, and the company that made the cookies is also gone. I have been searching for years (yes, I check World Market every year) and have not found them)! Pat, I nearly fell out of my chair when you mentioned these cookies this morning!
My favorite tradition is coffee and cookie and conversation with family and friends. Now that we have no little children in our family, the moments of being together have become treasured.
My favorite holiday sweet is tipsy sherry trifle. It is so good and decadent.
Three weeks before Christmas we get together at my parentsâ to decorate the tree and share red beans and rice with cole slaw!
My favorite Christmas treat is divinity. Yum!
My favorite holiday tradition is New Year’s Eve dinner with my husband. We have a nice home cooked meal and reflect on the year ending and hopes for the new year.
My favorite holiday treat are my brown sugar shortbread cookies, recipe from an old friend.
A favorite holiday tradition in my home came about unexpectedly. We will start a jigsaw puzzle a few days before Christmas. And it has to be completed before Christmas morning. One Christmas Eve my husband told the children to go to bed, but they protested they couldn’t, not until the puzzle was complete. They created this tradition and we didn’t catch on for several years. It’s a wonderful feeling working together before the big day.
Favorite Christmas sweet: in our family we make cranberry sorbet to eat with our Christmas meal. It is a fan favorite. I cannot come for Christmas without bringing the sorbet. I also make an eggnog recipe that my mom has made for years and I have friends that always hope they will be receiving some. I donât do much in the kitchen so those two recipes are especially important to me.
Favorite holiday tradition is making cookies with my daughter. She got married a couple weeks ago and lives in another state so, a tin of those cookies would be great!
My favorite childhood memory was going with my mom, aunts and cousins to downtown Chicago to the Walnut room for lunch at Marshall Fields. Back in the day this included getting dressed up, riding the train to the city, eating lunch out and then looking at the windows that were decorated for Christmas.

My favorite holiday tradition is gathering together with the entire family and sitting down to dinner. We put 3 tables together to fit the 23 of us
I like to make plates of cookies to take to the neighbors.
Favorite holiday tradition: My grandmother wrote poems that go with lighting a candle in a windows (in each direction, North, east, south and west) and on Christmas Eve around 8 or 9 we sing Christmas carols from room to room and then one of us reads the poem and lights the candle in that room. I live far from my family so I end up doing it by myself (and crying đ) now when I donât go home for the holidays.

Baking cookies days . The grandchildren come and I have areas set up for decorating and give cookies to decorate the way they want . Then we bag those up for them to take home .I add some others I have made to give them a variety .
After holiday dinner we play bingo for small prize bags. Enjoyed by all ages.

My favorite holiday traditions are decorating for Christmas, baking too many sweets to share with friends and relatives, and spending Thanksgiving at my Grandsons with lots of people. I have made so many of your quilts and take some to our local welfare department each Christmas to be given to families in need.

My personal favorite holiday sweet is a chocolate cookie that my girls and I have been making for years. But my husband is enthralled with pecan pie, so of course we must have a pecan pie for his Christmas dinner.
My favorite Christmas tradition was my husband and I staying up late on Christmas Eve to put toys together and watch Christmas music programs.
My favorite holiday tradition I started when my first grandson was born. I now have 3 grandsons. I purchase a Christmas ornament each year so that when they have their own homes and trees they will have ornaments from their Mimi.
My favorite holiday tradition is our large extended family chicken curry dinner. My mother served this one Christmas Eve and it became an instant family tradition. Itâs better cooked the day before, so all she did was fix a pot of rice and put us all to work chopping the toppings; vegetables, fruits, pickles, peppers, nuts, and coconut. Then we do a cookie exchange.
We binge watch a series on DVD. Hogan’s heroes, I love Lucy, MASH etc.
My favorite holiday sweet is Springerle cookies. I use a rolling pin that has been in my family for over 100 years.
Our favorite sweet at the holidays is our potato chip cookies. We have a huge cookie baking weekend every year to make about 15 different types of cookies for our friends and families cookie platters. We usually end up with between 700 and 1000 cookies! At Thanksgiving the kids and I look at past cookie lists, check for new recipes we want to try, and make the working list for grocery shopping and the making/baking extravaganza! The potato chip cookies have been a hold over for the past 5 years. Hot cocoa cookies are a close second!
Cookie#, cookies and more cookies. One year my mother made 100 dozen cookies and by the end of Christmas Day none were left. I try new recipes every year, plus many old favorites.

Our favorite holiday tradition is heading out around 7pm on Xmas eve to look at holiday lights in the area. We bring big mugs of cocoa and get to see how beautifully folks decorate their homes for the season!
Christmas Eve has always been special for our family. When the children were small, we would make dinner, go to church, try to get excited kiddos to bed, then spend hours assembling bicycles or stuffing stockings. One year we decided to forgo the fancy dinner in order to relieve a little stress and decided to go out for pizza instead. That tradition stuck and has been carried on for more than 40 years with our grown kids and grandchildren to this day!

Favorite tradition is having my family around me. This is harder and harder as each child has moved away and starting their own families. Two favorites are we would go to 4pm or 6 pm Christmas Eve mass then go out to eat just my family. The kids were allowed to open/ go through their stocking before they could wake us at 7 am. Favorite holiday traditionâŠ. On Christmas morning my mom and dad would come over for Christmas breakfast. Warm out of her oven were momâs yummyest cinnamon rolls . Then I carried on this tradition. Now my daughter makes them on Christmas morning. So fun to eat this yumminess over laughter of Christmas past memories. Not only are they sooo good to eat but the house smells just delicious. Thank goodness Christmas dinner is later in the afternoon as we stuffed ourselves with more than one. Some hunger teenager had a third one. Came back on hour later and had another one. Boys!!đ Haaaa
My favorite holiday tradition was baking the pies and cobblers with my Grandmother Whitmer. I was very close to her growing up. I spent every weekend I could with her. She taught me how to bake.
My favorite holiday dessert was my Grandmother Whitmer’s fresh apple pie with made from scratch crust using Crisco shortening.
