For our final HomeTown Charms block we come together to do good work. We end the blocks with Charity. It is the cornerstone of our communities. Neighbors helping neighbors in so many ways. It might be an ongoing project, or fundraising for a very specific need. Working together to do good is an incredible thing we as humans can be part of.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** their charity and fundraiser đ
- Kendall – I helped fundraise to get a church bell tower completed after being missing for 100 years, we also got bells for the tower from a church in England that was lost to fire, for example)
- Laura – My hometown now, Bellefontaine (French for beautiful spring) is being revitalized. By a group of entrepreneurs called, Small Nation. Our town has become a standard for other towns who are now restoring their towns. Small Nation has basically gone through gutted each building/business and restored it back to its original beauty. Old dilapidated buildings have been saved. And Our town has the smallest street (McKinley St) in America and the first concrete street in America (court st) It was a test street.
- Suzanne – Like many quilters, I pitch in with my guilds â community quiltsâ. Over the years Iâve made tops and now quilt for the group. They supply quilts to our local childrens homes , womens shelter, local sheriff and fire departments emergency response teams. I also quilt for a group in neighboring Connecticut called Quilts that Care. They supply quilts to cancer patients in treatment and in hospice. For over 30 years I have been a âfriendâ to my local library.
- Barbara – My favorite charity currently is The Normady Project. Itâs a organization created to help women who have escaped human trafficking, where they can learn to live independently through mentoring, support and encouragement. In addition, on-site classes are offered in areas of trauma recovery, healthy boundaries, life skills, employment skills, parenting skills, culinary skills, exercise and more.
- Carrie G – Both my daughter and I are Girl Scouts. We support our local council and service units efforts which not only empower young woman, but teaches them the importance of community service. Even my son benefited from his sister being a Scout for 13 years as he modeled what she learned through the organization.
- Kathy – Many of the groups I belong to do a Charity project each year. Over the years I have made quilts for preemie beds, lap quilts for Hospice, quilts for the woman's shelter, hats, scarves, and washcloths for the homeless. I also volunteer my time with several local organizations.
- Brenda -Growing up my mom taught me that no matter how bad you think you have it thereâs always someone else that is having an even harder time. Giving and helping others itâs a good thing.
Alzheimerâs research I made 36 Art quilts which were auctioned and proceeds went to research. Pretty Chemo caps with machine embroidery made and donated to local Cancer treatment center. I even donated my hair minimum 10â more than once. For cancer wigs that are provided free to patients. Crochet the tiniest hats & booties for our NICU. And also for theMarch of dimes preemie project. Making tiny quilts & blankets. Just the size of a legal envelope! Helps those fragile babies look more like real babies and gives comfort to the families. Just some of my ways to give to others
- Dorris – The quilt group I am in donates quilts to Quilts of valor, Child Advocacy, and Family Promise (a group for homeless or near homeless families with children in our county). There are only 8 of us on a regular basis and we have made and donated over 50 quilts so far this year. I do the quilting on a large percentage of the quilts in addition to doing my own.

My favorite holiday memory was going to Grandma's for Christmas Eve dinner. She would make ornaments throughout the year and her tree would be filled with her handcrafts. At the end of the evening we could select a new ornament to take home and put in our own Christmas stash. My favorite holiday tradition as a child was hopping from relative to relatives homes to visit, share food and cheer and to give and open gifts on Christmas Evae and Christmas Day. my aunt used to make over a hundred pounds of delicate cookies that would be disbursed as gifts to all the relatives and as I got older I was allowed to go to my aunts house and help her bake on weekends a few months before Christmas.
My sister and I always buy what we call , âget in trouble gifts âfor our grown children .weâve done it since they were little kids. Itâs usually some thing that shoots rubber bands, Nerf balls or rocket ships or some thing that somebody ends up getting in trouble for!
My favorite holiday trading is having Christmas breakfast together, everyone telling one thing they are grateful for.đ Another favorite holiday tradition is baking cookies for my family, friends and neighbors.
My favorite sweet treat at Christmas is, my momâs homemade Caramels!!!! They are the BEST and so addicting! đ„°
My family all get together for a mexican meal of tacos, enchiladas, rice, beans and tamales which I learned to make from my mother, needless to say I’m the only one that learned to make them so I’m always first on the list, I can almost smell everything cooking, happy holidays
My favorite holiday tradition is cooking with grandkids. Making their favorite dishes…no turkey here…homemade escarole soup and homemade gnocchi. We make it the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, so everyone is relaxed for the holiday.
Our Favorite Family Tradition was to make matching Christmas Sweatshirts (the Uglier the Better!) for the whole family even the dogs Then go look for Crazy Christmas Lights!
My Favorite Christmas Sweet is making our Family Mini Pecan Tarts–just the best–not too sweet with lots of pecans.
My favorite Holiday tradition has been making gingerbread houses with our friends. We all met while our kids were in the high school marching band and we have remained friends ever since. We’ve been doing this for over 10 years.

My favorite holiday tradition is putting up the Christmas tree. I love remembering where each ornament came from (many were souvenirs from vacations) and finding the perfect spot on the tree for each of them.

My favorite holiday treat is Christmas candy! Fudge, divinity, buckeyes, turtles, and the list can go onâŠâŠ.. yummy! And my favorite Christmas tradition is getting together with extended family. We live all over but typically manage to gather in one spot during Christmas holidays.
My favorite Christmas tradition is one my husband started over 53 years ago. Our oldest was three at the and was constantly asking how many more nights until Santa came? Well, he decided to use her red and green construction paper and made enough rings to get us to Christmas. Every night before bed she got to cut one off and could see how many more nights before Santa arrived. Our daughter is now 56 and has two girls who are 19 & 17 and she still makes the chain so it can go up on December 1st. They each got to cut one off every other night to make it fair. Makes my heart feel joy, knowing that his tradition has kept going and I’m sure when the two girls are Mom’s, they’ll follow what Mom always did. Making Christmas cookies has also become a family tradition with our son joining in with his nieces and sister in the making of them. Dad started that tradition too.
My favorite holiday tradition was going to my grandparents on Christmas Eve for homemade chicken and noodles. She passed just before Covid, so hoping to renew the tradition this Christmas Eve.

I am one of 15 siblings. As marriage and children increased our family size, it became hard for Mom and Dad and all of us to celebrate Thanksgiving together or with the Other Half’s family. What to do. We rented a church hall for the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Two of my sisters and I would go in early in the morning and pop two 20-lb turkeys in the oven.
Mom and Dad would come over around 8 a.m. and make Egg sandwiches and family members would stroll in and out, depending on the kiddies’ sports and other obligations, to visit with Grandma and Grandpa and all the Aunties and Uncles and Cousins. Around noon, we’d all start potatoes and sides and desserts, and at 4:30 we’d celebrate Thanksgiving together.
When my parents passed, we didn’t want to give up the tradition, but we also didn’t want to work so hard, either. We found a VGW Post with a caterer at a reasonable cost, and now every year we gather there. Our celebratin was Saturday the 19th, and we had 11 siblings with spouses, 30 grandchildren with 15 additional spouses, and 45 great-grandchildren for a total of 112. Can you believe it?! Talk about exponential….
Anyway, the older cousins and the little cousins love it and look forward to it every year. Plus it allows our spouses to celebrate the holiday with their families.
Life is good!

Our special sweet treats at the holidays are: Candied Yams and Pecan Pie. Alas, we can rarely do Pecan Pie since my granddaughter is allergic to most tree nuts – pecans are o.k. but we have to shell them ourselves to avoid cross contamination from other nuts in the processing plants…

My favorite holiday tradition is putting up the Christmas Tree. When my grandchildren were young, I would have the Christmas Tree up and the top of tree decorated on Thanksgiving. When everyone came for Thanksgiving dinner, afterwards the grand children would decorate the tree. They could only reach half so I would have the lights on and top decorated. I loved this tradition.

My favorite holiday tradition is Christmas Eve. As a family we decorate cut out cookies and then vote on most artistic, best all around, ugliest, most colorful etc. Then we go to church and when we come home and do our grab bag, have ham sandwiches, and then leave cookies and milk for Santa. After everyone is dreaming of sugar plums Santa stops by. My youngest “kid” is 27 and I still do this– LOL
My favorite Holiday tradition is getting woken up by a very early phone call to come to the grandkids house to watch them open presents. This started with my kids and their grandparents and we keep it going. The kids actually wait for us before they open their gifts..

My favourite holiday tradition was going shopping with my Mom on the day of Christmas Eve to get stocking stuffers for the seven of us. She loved the excitement of the crowds. So do I because I always leave something to buy on that day.

Our familyâs holiday tradition is to take a walk while the bird is in the oven. Looks like we will have a nice afternoon for our walk this year. We have been the host household for many years so have lots of fun Thanksgiving and fall decor items including multiple fall table runners. While we donât prepare as many treats as in years past, we always have to have homemade pumpkin and apple pies with various âwhiteâ toppings (whipped cream and ice cream). Happy Thanksgiving!

My favorite holiday tradition is hanging up the 21 homemade velvet embroidery stockings on my mantle as the last Christmas decoration to go up. That signals the start of the Christmas season for me. No, Santa doesnât fill all those stockings, only the ones for people who spend Christmas Eve night with us.

My favorite family tradition is decorating the tree. These days, I end up doing it by myself but my kids decorate with their kids now and so the family tradition goes on. I love seeing their trees when the kids have helped decorate.
When my son was young, one tradition for Xmas morning was to bake cinnamon rolls….our treat. Now that hes on his own and my husband worked every holiday for 35 years, we dont have any traditions…times change.
My favorite Holiday Treat is old Fashion Hard candy. The spicy flavors and rich colors were so amazing to me as a child. My Mom would set a bowl out the day after thanksgiving though the morning of January second. I miss them and her.

We also started a tradition of stockings, everyone buys 2 small items to put into each stocking so we have gifts to open since my daughter is grown and we buy very practical gifts for under the tree so the stockings add a little mystery and excitement!
our favorite sweet this time of year are keflis (sp), a hungarian pastry recipe handed down from my great grandmother. We’ve made it every year at Christmas time forever… I’m currently teaching my granddaughter so the tradition doesn’t die out when I do. Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas!
