** Hometown Charms! Block #7 **

I really love hearing what towns are famous for! Loads of fun out there in your towns. When you share your block tell me what your hometown is famous for.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** Famous things!

  • Carrie F – Penn State with all it’s games and visitors – I always talk in county terms because we have all these little towns and villages that meld together. Our county area is 1,113 sq miles with a population of 158,000 of which 46,810 are PSU students so it's really quiet here during the summer. But on home football games the population swells another 100,000!!
  • Laura – Betty White lived there for a brief time in 1945. She decided that farm life wasn't her thing.
  • Suzanne – Dr Joyce Brother’s lived here. The limestone cut from the quarry here was used to build the NY stock exchange and interiors in buildings in DC . The town was named Dover because it resembled the White cliffs of Dover. And although creepy the first electric shock treatments were developed and performed here in the Harlem Valley Psychiatric center hospital.
  • Melissa The town I grew up in is famous for this painting "The Spirit of 76" by Archibald Willard a resident. All 3 men were from the town and are depicted in the local parade each year by the same family.
  • Barbara – the top 3 things it’s known for is Cedar Point, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Pro Football Hall of Fame.
  • Dorris – Kingston – Population (2021): 5,953, Settled: 1792 Nestled along the shores of beautiful Watts Bar Lake, Kingston overflows with nature’s beauty. Once a major steam boat hub on the Tennessee River, Kingston’s waterfront is now mainly used for recreational enjoyment. Kingston was founded in 1799 and is the second oldest city in Tennessee. It was the state capital for one day on September 21, 1807, and remains the county seat for Roane County. Located in the center of Kingston is one of only seven antebellum courthouses remaining in Tennessee.
  • Lyleen – Duke basketball and the Durham Bulls, minor league baseball and movie.
  • Kathy –  The Old St. Mary's Church Cemetery , which is in the town center of Rockville, MD, is the final resting place of author F. Scott Fitzgerald, his wife Zelda Fitzgerald and their daughter Frances Fitzgerald. Best known for his book "The Great Gatsby."
  • Bobbie – Folks 'of a certain age' remember stories of Lunt and Fountanne – they lived at big home called 10 Chimneys about 2 miles from my house. They have tours and hold lectures in the summer by big stars. I've heard that many of the stars in the 20's and 30's would vacation there and walk around tiny Genesee Depot. • http://www.tenchimneys.org/
  • Kendall – The Big Merino https://www.bigmerino.com.au/about-the-big-merino/ I watched this being built as a child. It was very exciting to have a “Big” something. Built to celebrate the merino/wool industry that Goulburn was the centre of. In it original location (it was moved after the town was bypassed) you could climb up and. look out over the town through his eyes. There was a huge agradome built at the rear that housed massive amounts of information about the wool industry and had live shearing demonstration. Then pop on over the great Billabong Restaurant. The later 2 ceased to exist after the bus loads of tourists disappeared after the bypass was constructed.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Birthday Pat! I watch you everyday and have learned so much from you. Thanks for all you do for your quilting community.

  2. I currently live on the coast just outside of Bundaberg, in Queensland, Australia.
Best known for its Bundaberg Rum, and Distillery, plus, it is home to the Hinkler Hall of Aviation, which is dedicated to solo long-distance pilot Bert Hinkler.
Then down the road from us the Mon Repos Regional Park, a protected area for Sea Turtles. =)

  3. I’m from Sanford, MI, a little town where the flood happened in 2019. We were evaculated and lots of people lost their homes.

  4. My hometown is Pittsfield, Illinois, and we are know for being the hometown of John G. Nicolay President Lincoln’s Private Secretary. There are “Looking for Lincoln” landmarks all over our small town (population approx 4,500). If you are driving through check our the “William Watson Hotel” Abraham Lincoln and Stephen Douglas would gather in the lobby when they were in town. It is across the street from the Pike County Courthouse which Lincoln frequently practiced law.

  5. I live in Grand Island NY which is smack dab in the middle of the Niagara River. One side of the bridge gets you to Niagara Falls and the other end gets you to Buffalo. So I would say we are famous for Niagara Falls and Chicken Wings! Oh and Josh Allen #17 Quarterback for the Buffalo Bills!

  6. I reside in Washington state. We are famous for SALMON! Yes, delicious Salmon. Bright pink on the inside with a shimmery silver outside. A beautiful fish that is very delicious.

  7. Live in Austin Minnesota famous for spam and spam museum. Also home to hormel cancer research center

  8. We’re famous for Grant Wood living here. He’s known for painting “American Gothic”. The school he went to is still standing. It was a one room schoolhouse. The famous couple in American Gothic was his sister and his dentist.

  9. I live in Ash Fork AZ. My town is the Flagstone Capitol of the United States. Route 66 runs through town and we had a ‘Harvey House’ here next to the railroad until it burned down.

  10. I Live in Louisville, KY & we are famous for The annual Kentucky Derby Race & all the Derby activities that lead up to that first Saturday in May!!! Also the home of The Louisville Slugger Bat used by many famous baseball players.

  11. I live in Toccoa, GA, place of the 101st Airborne that trained on Currahee mountain, which we can see from our home. There is a wonderful historical museum here which highlights WW II

  12. I live in Round Rock, Texas which gets its name from a large round rock located in Brushy Creek. The rock marked a low water crossing for cattle being driven to the railheads in Kansas. This route was known as The Chisholm Trail. Round Rock is also famous for a train robber named Sam Bass. Bass and his gang were tracked to Round Rock by the Texas Rangers where there was a gunfight which led to Bass’ death. Round Rock is the international headquarters of Dell Technologies. Round Rock is 15 miles north of Austin.

  13. The first armored car robbery in the U.S. happened in 1927 in my hometown of Bethel Park, PA. The road was destroyed by dynamite to steal the coal mine’s payroll. My grandfather was in the newspaper picture of the bystanders standing around the wreckage.

  14. Our claim to fame in Rhinelander is a mythialogical beast called a Hodag. Google him and you’ll find that even in recent years he’s a very popular character. By the way he’s green with white horns .

  15. We still have ‘Gold Rush’ celebration every October. (3rd weekend.)
A parade, old fashioned day, gold panning, lots of venders with hand made items.
We still have active gold mines. (Crisson’s and Consolidated)
    =)

  16. Dahlonega, GA.
    We’re definitely a tourist town.
Know for the 1st gold rush, even before those out west. =) The gold on the GA capital dome in Atlanta came from here. We have a wonderful little town, a huge college/university University of North Georgia (UNG) It started as a military academy and still is. And there is Dahlonega gold on the top of the administration building, too.
We have many little shops in town… my favorite is Paul Thomas Chocolates, there is also the Fudge Shop. Check us out at dahlonega.org

  17. Fallbrook, CA is known as the Avocado Capital of the World! We have a festival every year in the Spring. I want to post a photo but not able to here.

  18. I’m originally from A small town in Minnesota called Hastings on the Mississippi River which was famous for the only spiral bridge in the United States. It was made of wood and I was about 8 years old when it was torn down and a new metal bridge was erected on its site. I loved the spiral bridge and would get excited every time Dad would drive over it. It was one of a kind.

  19. Here at Cassville, MO we are recognized for Roaring River State Park, we’re 15 minutes from Eagle Rock Lake and 45 minutes from Branson, Missouri Star is about 4 to 5 hours north but other small quilt shops to hunt for.

  20. I’m live in Folsom CA, made famous by Johnny Cash for a prison. There are actually 2 prisons here. Calf. state Prison at Sacramento where they put the really bad guys and the Old Historic Folsom Prison where they have the less dangerous. We celebrate Johnny Cash here with a bike/walking trail that goes by the prison and the Johnny Cash crossing that goes across Folsom lake crossing so you can get to the bridge accross the American River Canyon and hook up to other trails. We also have a major Intel Campus here and are a nice middle class suburb east of Sacramento in the foothills.

  21. The town I was born in is the home of the Burlington Northern Railroad. I grew up a few miles east in Sedro Woolley Wa where the Loggerodeo is held.

  22. My hometown is where Chip and Joanna Gaines live. Fixer Upper show was filmed here. They just restored The Castle that is on Austin Avenue. They have the Silos downtown and people from all over the world come here to shop.

  23. I live in Montana. Enough said, right? Not THAT part of Montana. I’m in eastern Montana where the Yellowstone River runs north. Where Lewis and Clark traveled. Where Custer camped. Makoshika State Park is my back door. Cottonwood trees and prairie grasses.

  24. Harry Houdini lived here as a child. And the first house where the lights were powered by hydroelectricity is in my hometown of Appleton, Wisconsin.

  25. I live in Comox, BC, Canada which is famous for it’s glacier. Unfortunately, the glacier is rapidly dwindling away. When we first moved here in 1979 the glacier covered the whole top of the mountain, but now it just covers a bit in the middle. You can even see a bit of the back of the mountain at the very top of the glacier. So sad. It is also sad because the glacier has important meaning for the indigenous people here.

  26. I live in Fallon Nv, its where Top Gun base is and Tom Cruise made his latest movie here, we are also known for the “Hearts of gold” melons and Burning Man is in Gerlach not far from us. We also have Sand Mountain where people come with rv’s and their toys to go up a mountain of sand, its amazing and fun to come to Fallon Nevada, 60 miles East of Reno, Nv
