UFO Challenge is getting filled out.. want to join me?

UFO…  Un-Finished Objects.

Almost all of us have them.. there are a RARE group of quilters that finish everything in a timely manner, then there is the majority of us who start new things and store others away… raise your hand if you can relate!

It’s time for the annual UFO Challenge that my friends at American Patchwork & Quilting hosts each year and they have a GREAT Facebook group to get support, share and they live videos from the magazine offices, so fun!

They will pick a random number each month and you do that project!

So… deep breath…and decide… do you want to challenge yourself to finish or ‘move forward’ one project a month that has been sitting waiting it’s turn?

ALL of us really do want to finish projects don’t we? In the spirit of MAKING myself finish some projects by telling the world I am… .. I share a few of my UFO projects piled up…

1…2….3…. 18….

I personally need to do a re-evaluation of what I really want to finish, and what I want to move onto other people .

At the moment these projects seems to have gotten spread out around my studio .. and … cough.. cough.. auxiliary storage areas.

That means.. I HAVE NO CLUE what I have.

Can you relate?

What I suggest is that we (the ROYAL WE) now select 12 projects that could be finished or greatly moved forward during a 4 week time span of the month it comes up in. And number them all.

Now maybe you don’t have that many UFOs  ….but… for me….it’s kind of easy to find 12 like that. I actually have most of them as a top..

now…. next print the sheet and get ready to rock and roll those 12 projects into the LAND Of Finishes!

Leave me a comment and tell me what is your number one quilt you WANT to finish in 2018

  1. #1 quilt I would like to finish is my Splendid Sampler from 2017 I am so far behind from working on other things for other people, I have put all things I wanted to work on, on the back burner of the stove. So that would be the first one. I did get 35 blocks into it before I stopped, then of course I have Grandmas Kitchen, Childrens Library, the Aurifil, Jacquelyn Steves, “I love home, and several others to finish, get one or two blocks done and I move on. gotta stop that.

  2. Wow, this was eye opening….Honesty is the best policy…so I started to count….those tops that I have IN MY FACE hanging on a door 6
Those started, but for some reason, pushed aside…..11
Those in planning (fabric. [pattern and supplies purchased) 14
and about 3 hand sewing projects.. I think I have OAofP
    Over Abundance of Projects……Help!
PS..and I do quilt my own

  3. My personal #1 quilt I want to finish (finish hand sewing 62-6.5″ blocks, top, sandwich, quilt, label and bind) is our king-sized Farmer’s Wife 1930’s quilt. It will be so awesome to complete this one since it’s for our bed and something I did myself.

  4. I have 17 UFOs that include incomplete as well as
fabric/pattern purchased but not started. Quilting
Is like reading, my book must suit my mood. My first
finish of 2018 began as a leader and ender for a mystery
    In the fall.

  5. A quilt I have started for my husband a few years ago. I have most of the top pieced and just need some solid black to put it all together. Then need batting and backing fabric and some simple quilting and it will be completed.

  6. First priority is to finish winter soltice and then start grandma kitchen and some of the ufo I have started. Alot of what I have started are clothes sewing.

  7. Mi proyecto numero uno va a ser acabar el “THE SPLENDID SAMPLER” que hice con Pat Sloan. Tengo 119 bloques acabados y me propongo poner el sashign y montar la colcha

  8. I have a stack of quilts needing to go for an edge to edge quilting and then binding. There are probably a few table toppers and smaller quilts I can do myself. A stack means I need to gather them up and at least count them…I have no idea! I just bought new fabric for two new quilts I want to get started now too. Last year I worked out of scraps and finished several projects, so I do feel like I am making progress. I’m jumping in!

  9. My #1 UFO to finish is 12 or 13 years old. It began in a combined quilt history lesson and quilt class. Feathered Stars, which started with a block from an 1830’s UFO! On the day, there was a Feathered Star quilt hanging on the wall, with an extremely unusual border – dogtooth around semi-circles. I have made all the 9 ‘centre’ stars and I would like to re-create the border or reference the border somehow. That day was a real eye-opener of how true beauty and something hand-made can stand the test of time and still be so loved and used.

  10. Great question! A partially-quilted “memory quilt” I started for our sweet dog, Teddy. I got interrupted when he got sick, and then forgot how exactly I was quilting it and delayed quilting it, and then he died. After that, I felt bad about it, and let it sit for awhile. But now I want to bring it back out and have Teddy’s quilt be part of our day-to-day life. Even if the quilting isn’t perfectly coordinated, I think it will be okay. I just need to get to it. It’s ridiculous that it has taken me years to finish.

  11. I am making two baby quilts, using the same pattern & fabric since they will be 1000s a miles apart and the new parents don’t know each other. I need to get them done. Elephant Parade.

  12. I have 3 lap quilts, that were my beginner learning quilts. One quilt as you go , I have lost interest . I have 9 out of 12 blocks done. I’m considering hooking them together and calling it done. Another like it in a different colorway, need to finish 4 blocks and quilt. I would like to do it. One quilt top done with your pattern for Golden Coins. I think I have just found a quilting plan for it and want to finish it. Also have 2 blocks from your Be My Neighbor. My colors were scrappy fall, thinking I may make a small fall Welcome wall quilt. Have a full queen I am excited to start with a workshop at our gulid, also a large flying geese scrappy quilt I would love to start, found all the colors in my stash for it, except needed to purchase for the boarders. Busy busy keep on dreamin’!

  13. that sounds fun, I have heard of using coffee filters, thin fabric and batting, but not dryer sheets. Good recycle idea. Playing with scraps is so fun! I’m finishing a small quilt for our guild small quilt auction. Worked on it this weekend , just have binding left to put on it,even found some left over binding that works perfect for it. It was so fun to make and I love it. I’m naming it Egyptian Palace Pillars, made from leaders and enders and inherited fabric. would include a pic but lost my kindle cord.

  14. My #1 priority is my daughters wedding quilt. She and her husband have been married for 2 1/2 years shave 2 kids already! 😙 It should be a priority #1, right?

  15. I don’t even know where to begin. I guess the number 1 thing to finish would be to quilt the two sandwiched quilts for my husband. They’ve been basted for 6 years now. I probably need at least 5 sheets to list all the UFOs. 😄

  16. The quilt I want to finish this year is one for my grand baby due in August. I have not started it yet but it is on the UFO list. The quilt was requested by my son-in-law, the new daddy.

  17. My ufo right now is On Ringo Lake. My daughter purchased a new home and is doing her bedroom in aqua and coral. When she saw me piecing the quilt, she immediately staked her claim! She’s impatiently waiting for me to finish. Nothing like someone tapping their fingers to make you hurry!

  18. I want to put on a border of my tree lot quilt, done in august 2017 retreat. then am working on a quilt group I belong to in Metairie, Louisiana, a mystery quilt done all year. Then I want to finish a paper pieced quilt worked on during a class I took at a quilt shop in the fall of 2017.

  19. I have a quilt that is part of a over all quilt that I have finish the others, but not this one, it is a quilt portion of a house that needs to be finish this year. So I am bound and determine to finish it this year, it is only about 12 years later, I guess I just never like as much as the other parts!

  20. My number one to finish is a Dalia quilt I started 2 years ago.
I’m made the Dalai and have the surrounding parts cut, but it is to big.
Have to figure how to make it smaller.

  21. My number one is a skull with flames quilt for my nephews squad leader. The pieces are ONE INCH finished….. but more than 1/3 done! So there is light and I will not do another one like that.

  22. My preferred number one finish is my Pixie Noel Snowglobes quilt. The snowglobes are all complete, the strips sewn to make Irish chain blocks, so I’m well on my way 🙂 However…there is a list 6 pages long of UFO’s and purchased projects to work on as well, not including the birthday, baby and wedding gifts that will inevitably end up on the list as the year progresses! SEW much to do–I love it 😉

  23. My brother’s birthday quilt from about 5 years ago. The top was done, but I am finally quilting it this year!

  24. A quilt I started for my 3rd great grand baby. The top is done with blocks that I gave to family members to leave messages for little Everly Rose. I am so bad that I need to get this finished while she is still young.

  25. I have a few quilt tops finished that I would like to get quilted. One being the Pat Sloan BOM from 2015. I would also like to finish the Solstice challenge, a Scrappy Shadow Bear Paw and Bee Happy.

  26. I plan to finish a wedding guestbook quilt in the next couple of weeks. The end of February I am going on a 4 day quilt retreat and want to finish piecing Nancy’s 2017 BOM than I will start on a Christmas quilt.

  27. I have many that I want to finish but if I had to choose one it would be my sunset quilt I started several years ago and got side tracked with other thing and never made it back to it.

  28. I told DD#1 I would make her a sofa size Memory quilt from her Grandma’s clothes that she gave me. I got bogged down learning to print on fabric (want to add a few photos here and there) Granddaughter asked me if I could have it done in time for her mom’s birthday in April. That’s the #1 project on my list. Too many others to even THINK about at this point!

  29. I am doing a trunk show in May for my guild, I need to finish as many UFOs as possible! lol But I think the one I’m really wanting to finish is my Orca Bay (Bonnie Hunter) mystery quilt that’s been a completed top for a few years now. 🙂

  30. I am finishing a throw for my tv room. I am using flannel backing since it looks like we are going to use it this winter.

  31. I am finishing a throw for my tv rooom. Just for me. Flannel backing since so far this fall, I have been freezing. I have 8 more projects for sure I want to finish.

  32. My UFO’s are numerous like everyone else as my list of projects to begin. The one that tops the list is a gift for my grandson who is “crazy” for hedgehogs. They have the Fancy forest pieced and half quilted but arthritis surgery on my left thumb will have be sidelined for a few weeks. I have promised it for Valentine’s Day. He will be one happy boy when he is sleeping under his quilt surrounded by all the stuffed animal hedgehog he own.

  33. My first UFO to finish is my daughter’s Wizard of Oz quilt before her birthday the end of January. After six long years my daughter had given up on getting it done, so it will be a perfect birthday surprise.

  34. I have more than I want to admit 🙂 I do great til I get to the borders 🙁 I will choose 12 and follow along to see what I can finish. Hopefully will be the incentive I need.

  35. Trust me you are not alone-the only thing is that you are honest!!!!
Lots of us get distracted by new projects!

  36. Well Pat I am going to write it so HOPEFULLY this will make me finish it. But (and its not an excuse) I have just moved house and I have not unpacked my sewing room yet! Cause we need to live in the rest of the house!!!! I have about 6 blocks done of a Baltimore quilt from an attic in a parsonage. Marsha Radtke wrote a book and I fell in love with applique. I want it for my bed in my newish 200 year old house!

  37. My priority is two. I started a quilt for my husband two years ago. The top has been done for several months but he kept changing his mind on the back. We found an extra a wide backing while on a car trip. I have to get on before he decides on another crazy backing idea! I’m renting time on a long arm this week. The second is a quilt of valor I want to make to celebrate my daughter-in laws recent promotion. There are so many others. Working on my list;)

  38. WOW, I HAVE 7 TOPS , 3 WITH THE BACKING PICKED OUT AND WITHE THE QUILT. 1 OF THEM WAS A STASH BUSTER, AND 3 TABLE TOPERS

  39. Ive got a lot of UFO’S to finish, The Splendid Sampler and The Winter Solstice zre two plus a couple that I have had to finish for a number of years, one just needs putting together as I was thinking of adding another border to make it bigger and another QAUG which I have to put a binding on plus I have a few small other projects to finish , I also want to finish some quilt tops that my late mother made but now would like to finish them and maybe donate them to a charity
