UFO… Un-Finished Objects.
Almost all of us have them.. there are a RARE group of quilters that finish everything in a timely manner, then there is the majority of us who start new things and store others away… raise your hand if you can relate!

It’s time for the annual UFO Challenge that my friends at American Patchwork & Quilting hosts each year and they have a GREAT Facebook group to get support, share and they live videos from the magazine offices, so fun!
They will pick a random number each month and you do that project!
So… deep breath…and decide… do you want to challenge yourself to finish or ‘move forward’ one project a month that has been sitting waiting it’s turn?
ALL of us really do want to finish projects don’t we? In the spirit of MAKING myself finish some projects by telling the world I am… .. I share a few of my UFO projects piled up…
1…2….3…. 18….

I personally need to do a re-evaluation of what I really want to finish, and what I want to move onto other people .
At the moment these projects seems to have gotten spread out around my studio .. and … cough.. cough.. auxiliary storage areas.
That means.. I HAVE NO CLUE what I have.
Can you relate?

What I suggest is that we (the ROYAL WE) now select 12 projects that could be finished or greatly moved forward during a 4 week time span of the month it comes up in. And number them all.
Now maybe you don’t have that many UFOs ….but… for me….it’s kind of easy to find 12 like that. I actually have most of them as a top..
now…. next print the sheet and get ready to rock and roll those 12 projects into the LAND Of Finishes!
Leave me a comment and tell me what is your number one quilt you WANT to finish in 2018

Hmm. I’m behind. I was to machine quilt a small lap size quilt for Jan., but just started it yesterday. Guess I was a little bit apprehensive to start, having only done it once before, a good 5 years ago now. But it is coming along nicely. I may even get to finish my Feb., UFO, which is a small quilt to machine quilt also. Thanks Pat, I may bet a few of my UFO’s done this year.
Eeek gads! I have a box maybe 2 of ufos. I inherited my grandmothers quilts she made in 1928-30 that i want to quilt. As well as a quilt i made my grandson and son and daughter in law. Have others i need to complete making as tops. Time to take deep breath and just dive into free motion quilting.
The #1 UFO that I want to finish is a 2016 block of the month quilt as you go project that I did locally. I needed to make 10 of each block so the quilt would fit my queen size bed with a nice size hang over. I have a quilt top that I had problems with the backing buckling when I was quilting it last December…I had to rip the quilting out and readjust the sandwich a few times, but… I have another quilt where the blocks have been made, but I haven’t figured out how I want to position them for the top. Then there’s my last UFO…I need to make some more blocks before sewing them together.
I want to finish a horse quilt for one of my granddaughters. That would be number 1. However I have ever so many more. My horse quilt is in Ohio and I am in Florida now until May. Oh dear.
I WILL get 3 QOV quilts done by Feb 28th. Because I couldn’t see well enough to sew for the first 9 months of 2017, I couldn’t work on any QOV. I love making them and seeing them presented to the men and women who have given so much of themselves for our country. After February, I plan to get 3 more QOV done by December. Woot woot!
the first on my way longer list than 12 is the quilt for my 11 year old granddaughter who is having surgery in late march. So it will be first done.
My number one is a Baby Quilt for my great grandson due to enter the world in early March.
Finishing up the awesome Splendid Sampler quilt project! Pretty sure that I’ll have 2 quilts at the end – one with squares using Moda Shibori fabric (beautiful indigo and white colours) and mainly star patterned squares and another with the rest of the Splendid Sampler squares. In the second, a big challenge is going to be figuring out the colour of the sashing strips as I used all sorts of colours and patterns for the backgrounds of the individual squares!
I really want to finish my Children’s Library. Also I have a red, white and black block quilt. I started it a few years ago. Then decided I didn’t like the pattern.
I have a really old ufo for you . While my Grandmother was ill with cancer,(she died in 1940)she started to knit a bed quilt. My Mother got it as her mom lived with her back then. It sat in a box ,wrapped up in a pillow case in individual squares until I got it . It still in that pillow case to this day. I am redoing me sewing room that became a catch all for things that didn’t have a home. I have 90 7 inch squares done and the instructions to do more. I am hesitant to try to make more as I may now do the same guage as hers it takes 145 to make a twin size and I have the crochet thread to finish it. Back then the yarn came in skeins andn you had to ball it yourself. I have one more to ball and then I will have 6 more balls . One ball should make 15 units but I not so sure of that. LOL
Oh, where to start? #1 is a baby quilt and a toddler quilt by end Jan. #3 and #4 are memory quilts (full size) for two of my nieces. #5 is my first mystery quilt (need to sew rows together) and then finish. #6 is Pat’s Scrap Happy Little Wishes and #7 is Welcome to my Neighborhood. I have plenty of future projects with the pattern and the fabric pulled… I will move on to those. I’d better get the sewing area organized.
I want to finish my Pumpkin Patch BOM this year.
First I will finish quilting a string quilt for my hubby. Then finish piecing at least 3 on the UFO list so I can get them quilted. Unfortunately quilting them is my least favourite part so I tend to piece tops faster than I can quilt them. I’m hoping to get more finishes this year.
I’m gonna try this!! Don’t know how far I’ll get – cause we are leaving to cruise for 12 days January 20th and again in April and again in October and last one for 2018 in December!!! BUT I do have some that I really need to finish, plus some oldie but goodies from years past that I’ve just put aside. So wish me luck – here goes! Oh, one good thing I’m going to a quilt retreat Thurs-Monday in Abingdon, VA and its called Snow Camp!! First on the list is a king size quilt for a gift – yup, I’m crazy!!
I want to complete a house quilt out of my plaid fabrics people ave given me.
I’ve got a challenge quilt that’s been sitting unfinished for @ 17 years. I don’t need to do much other than quilt & bind it so I think that’s the first one on my list.
I have so many, but I will say my Christmas wreath that I started at least 14 years ago, when I took a class through my guild in Newport Oregon. I have been working on and off, mostly off ever since. I have to quilt it and bind it.
Winter Solstice. Have all assembled just needs the borders and the pieced back then off to the quilter.
I started a red on black BOM a few years ago. I just have the sashing left. I really want to see this one finished.
My number one ufo is a Christmas quilt I finished piecing in 2017 but stalled on the backing. I have a great plaid and just never say down and did the matching. And then I really missed the quilt this year!
Thank you Pat for the form. I actually have 14 quilts in various levels of completion and about another 10 on the planning board. I don’t set New Year Resolutions but I do ‘Slay My Dragons’ and I intend to include my UFOs as part of the dragon scenario.
I have a quilt that I started in a class. It is an OESD embroidery pattern called “Fresh Bloom” My machine will only do a 4X4 area, so, I have to go to my LQS to use a machine on their free-sew days. Hopefully, I can get it done before the end of the month. I only need a couple of hours to finish it.
Ripples and Reflections
I want to finish a BOM that my LQS did in 2015. Just needs borders. It already has an appt. with the local Spa.
I think I will make my own UFO list “18 for 2018”!
I want to finish a set of completed blocks that I got from a quilter’s estate sale who suffered a massive stroke and went to a nursing home in her 50s. She had the blocks and all finishing supplies including the backing bundled and tied with a selvage from the borders. Her work still inspires me with the fabric selections and workmanship. This one has sat undone and now that I am more confident in my ability, I want to finish it in her honor.
I must be that rare quilter….I have two unfinished quilts, one is Let’s go camping, the other is a beach bargello that I started after Christmas. I do have several ideas in my head, some have fabric, some do not.
Happy quilting
I want to finish my Splendid Sampler. It will be 105″ square when done. The blocks are done, finishing the border than off to the quilter. Finally the binding, want it on my bed in 2018.
A quilt for my daughter-in-law affectionately called the bird quilt. It includes appliqued quilt squares of red birds made by her late grandmother!! I have had the birds for years-probably going on a decade. I even consulted with a manufacturer to get a particular line of fabric to include in the quilt. I became discouraged when the complimentary quilt square had the wrong dimensions in the pattern. Regardless of the math problem…this is the year this thing is out the door….put a fork in it and me, too!! LOL
First & foremost I want to finish Grandma’s Kitchen! The last block I have done is Block 20. I got this/1
#1 on my list to finish by March, is the quilt I just started. It’s a gift for my Pastor’s to celebrate the 20th anniversary of being in the church building. Before that, everyone met in their home. Along with that quilt, my focus will be to finish all the quilts I need to machine quilt…oh my goodness, there’s more than I thought! Definitely enough to keep me busy for the year!
