I’m busy making my main studio space more usable… check out my progress AND enter my giveaway!

I give you a BEFORE tour

My main studio space is where I work all the time. It has my projects in progress, machines, computer, and most of my fabric.

About 3pm I started pulling all the projects out of my studio space to resort them and put them into better size container and more effective & productive spots for my use. I did a video for you

For the post part I’m not doing fabric, just projects.

That includes all the different products  I review or test. PLUS I had some UFOs in my main space that were not being worked on and taking up valuable work space. They needed to be moved.

Taking it out is EASY.

Deciding how to regroup and where in my studio should it now be, is more difficult. I started when I got up.

For our family business we work at home, so our whole small home has become our office.

We have no basement and no usable attic. So my business takes up 4 rooms in our home.

  • My studio is my main work room and what you see all the time. It is the family room of our home, it’s what in the videos with my beautiful Koala Furniture and my Baby lock machines
  • The shipping department has one room as his office.
  • We have 1 other rooms for quilts, batting, notions, projects not being working on, other fabric, books, etc.
  • AND the ‘over flow’ room right now is our dining room as it can’t all fit in the one room upstairs.  The photo above is one wall in my dining room. On the wall is my village quilt (BUY the pattern here), and the blocks are from my Triangle book (HERE)

In my studio I keep JUST what I’m working on and my main fabric. On that video I talk about it being messy. It is  ‘messy’ in that projects were not in optimum work places, split across areas, and things got put in spots that took up valuable space in my small room

Now for a few photos of my ‘after’

  1. I am just starting into quilting. I have been buying or getting free fabrics. Justing to figure how I want to store in my guest room where I see.

  2. I thought I was entering the contest, now that I scrolled down and see this, I am concerned that I put my information in a site that will be sending spam. The POP UPs are deceiving.

  3. Leftover fabrics from my projects. I just leave them in the bins and stack them up. I really need to take care of them right away. Just cut up the leftovers into usable pieces and put them away.

  4. My biggest organization issues are: I am using the living room as a studio do we have to live around all the stuff and once a month it all has to be packed away so we can get massages in the space – the stuff never gets put back in the same order – all the stuff and then some are kept in the guest room – guest room ends up a mishmash of giftwrapping supplies, gifts and sewing/quilting supplies. The solution down the road is for an area in the basement to be turned into a seeing area.

  5. My biggest organization problem is just a very small sewing space and too many projects! I have started buying under the bed style storage totes to put projects in that I am working on but they are piling up under my ironing board. I have started a two scrap buster quilts to try and whittle down the many smaller pieces that are overflowing my fabric cabinet. I love your e-mails and facebook page. I am currently working on Lets Go Camping and Christmas Fig in the blue and tan colorway. I did the summer solstice in Halloween Fabrics last year and just put it on my bed for the fall season. Thanks for all you do!

  6. My biggest problem is thread. I have it all in a drawer of one of those plastic, rolling 4 drawer things, too many spools to see what I have easily.

  7. My biggest problem is storing all the leftover fabric that’s too big to throw away but too small to keep with the larger pieces.

  8. Organizing my fabric is the biggest think I have going right now. I recently purchased comic book boards for 2 yards or less. Got some throw away card board bolt rolls from the fabric store for larger pieces and am starting that this week. Fat quarters and fat eights are in a drawer that I’m not happy about. Working on it!

  9. Since I’m getting new floor and paint in my sewing room, everything has been pulled out. What a crazy mess. I have way too much (so my husband says)! I’m going to take your advice and organize carefully. I’m as you are, I cannot work in a messy sewing room.

  10. My biggest organizational problem is using a small bedroom for sewing and storage with not enough storage. I’ve got it in pretty good shape but now you’ve made me want to tackle it again….lol

  11. My biggest problem is making the most of the space I have. I am sure there is a better layout for everything, but darned I’d i can figure it out!

  12. Organization. I have tried most every way to corral the loose and runaway threads. I’ve got drawers full of half used spools and bobbins… I’ve got them on spool racks and more sitting on shelves. How in the world to tame these threads?!?! I’ve got girls ponytail holders to attach bobbins to spools… it’s just a hot mess always!!!!

  13. My biggest problem is organizing my thread so it’s easier to find the cone I need. I keep all my sewing thread in a clear plastic drawer, and my quilting threads for my longarm in plastic see-through drawers ….. My useable wall space is limited so I can’t display it on shelves. Any other options?

  14. I recently started reorganizing and am so pleased with the results. So much easier to find what I need and also recognize that I do not have to make another purchase.

  15. My biggest problem with my studio is space. I am one who like to see their sewing tools and fabrics. So it is hard for me to organize because i have so much stuff. I don’t just have a sewing studio it is my craft studio as well. So i haven’t come up with a solution as of yet,to help me organize my space. I am still lookig at others and their sewing and crafting space for organizing my studio.

  16. When I go into my sewing room I can become overwhelmed and have difficulty finding a place to begin. I have gone in there before stood in the middle of the room for a minute then turned around and walked back out….

  17. I have a problem with keeping up with the list of UFO’S!! It just keeps growing! I get So many scraps I don’t know where or how to store them without taking up so much room!! I really like scrappy quilts but I also have a lot of kits!

  18. I have too much fabric, too much scraps and basically just too much Stuff and I love it all. Plus I can destroy my room in 20 minutes if I am sewing. When the stuff buries me, I will clean up and it will be clean until I go back in and start to sew.

  19. Certainly not my biggest problem by far, but it drives me crazy: thread storage and keeping all those tails tucked! Sometime during the night, they mingle and when i go to retrieve what i need, there’s usually pulling and rewinding. It just never looks tidy enough. I’m sure there is a brilliant and simple solution, i should probably just relax.

  20. Like others, it’s organizing the fabric. I splurged on shallow Rubbermaid bins, but they’re heavy and too often just get left on the floor. Need something more user-friendly!

  21. I tried, and like, hanging projects on pant hangers. I place small pieces in zip lock bags with a thin piece of cardboard to keep them flat. I keep the thread and bobbin in a separate bag, then hang the finished portion. I placed a decorative coat hook on the wall. Anchored it down well, because I have a lot of projects going on. 😀

  22. Organizing in a small space and what to do with my scraps. I don’t know whether to keep them together in bag or separate them by colors.

  23. My biggest problem with organisation is that I don’t have a sewing room, I sew at the dining table and store all my fabrics etc in cupboards, drawers and under my bed anywhere I can find a space. It doesn’t help that my daughter her partner and my baby grandson live with me so my dining table isn’t even solely for quilting everything has to be cleared for meals

  24. My biggest challenge is managing the scraps once a project is finished. I love scrap quilts, so I feel compelled to keep all of the little leftovers for future projects. I have tried several systems to organize them, but have yet to find one that really works.

  25. I have just moved and got rid of a lot but kept a lot. My biggest problem is making a smaller space usable and
    efficient.

  26. My biggest problem is UFO’s. Too many. I began working on them while my longarm was being repaired. I got 4 tops completed. I now have 7 waiting to be quilted. I’m going to try very hard to complete these before starting more. LOL!

  27. I moved my sewing area from a room over the garage to an open loft area so I could enjoy a view of the outdoors . My problem is trying to keep it (fairly) neat & tidy because now that it’s visible & located in the main living area.

  28. I have a couple organizational problems – how to store fabric scraps & my wip’s. I’ve tried cutting some into smaller usable cuts but I don’t always want to cut down the big scrap pieces as they might be useful for small projects thus my scraps are a mess & take time to sift thru to find pieces to use.

  29. My biggest organization problem is remembering where I have put things away. I think that I have found a way to organize fabric, fat quarters etc and then forget where they are stored or realize that they are more difficult to access than before

  30. I am basically a fabric hoarder and never throw anything away. That and my husband and 4 sons have no problem adding things to my sewing room without rhyme or reason.

  31. My biggest problem in organizing is just getting started. I have a million things going and keep working but then spend way too much time, moving and looking for the things I need to use…ugh!

  32. My biggest challenge is that I have so many hobbies which take up so much room. As well as quilting, there’s beading, needle felting and my newest, weaving. Where to put everything? And of course, the UFO’s. Oh my!
