Pat Sloan: String Bean Challenge

Ready for my second 2015 Quilt Challenge? Most of my challenges this year will involve using up your STASH.. this is a GOOD thing right? Because then you have more ROOM for new things.. like my fabric… wink!

The last challenge was called 'Hip to be Square'... I'm taking you from square to strips this time with my 'String Bean' challenge!

So why the name? As I am typing this it's snowing, and this is a variation of a logcabin block in a quilt I made that is LONG and SKINNY… so I thought String Bean was a fun way to describe it!

The Challenge Details..

  • Cut a lot of scraps into 2.5" strips. Use up left over jelly rolls, ends of Fat Quarters, extra scraps. If you are super adventurous, use random widths!
  • Use my block pattern for this Logcabin block (see below)
  • THE ONE CRITERIA – Use some pieces of MY fabric lines in your quilt top. note the word PIECES… so get into your stash and cut some strips of my fabric to add in!
  • Between Mar 5 and April 19 start sewing String Bean blocks
  • By April 19 make a crib size or larger quilt TOP to share!! Woohoo! I will put a page up on April 30 for you to share your quilt TOP (note the word top, although i will give extra brownie points for it being quilted).

Between now and then I'm going to post some options, inspirations, and have some photo sharing so we can share our progress

  1. I always love all your awesome scrappy ideas! You are my favorite quilting artist! Thanks, I will get to my machine very soon! 🙂

  2. think I’m going to tag along on this, I have a box full of scraps and some of its from your different fabric lines. Nothing like a scrappy quilt.

  3. Pat, I will be using your bobbins & bits fabric, one or two in each block.I always plan my quilts, however I am doing this a little different ,using a mix yours, modern & traditional anything goes

  4. The only fabrics of your that I had are from your fruits and veg line. I also had a stack of other fruit and veg fabrics I had collected. They are all now in this quilt! It is pretty busy looking but fun. Just need to prepare the backing and quilt it!

  5. I want to join the String Bean Challenge, but I need to know what size block I start with. Can you help?

  6. Been wonder what to do with the fabric you sent me. This will be a good way to use some of it. It looks like an easy one for this old gal to do… *smile.

  7. Looks like a fun and easy pattern. Certainly have lots of fabric I can cut up and I love your Bobbins & Bits batiks which I already have. This looks like an ideal way to use it.

  8. I have made all the blocks…but did not have any of your fabric. I was able to use a jelly roll I ordered online several years ago. I was at a loss for how to use the roll but it worked well for String Bean blocks.
Tomorrow I will assemble the block. Thanks for the great pattern.
I also noticed the block would make a great placemat!

  9. I usually make around 6 quilts a year.
Your string bean challenge sounds fun, I’ll have to order some fabric real soon.
Thank you for setting these challenges up.
    Sarah from NCPM Quilt Group.

  10. I can make the pattern for the challenge, but it wont have any of your fabrics.Sorry,I’m a poor girl.

  11. I have pulled 2-1/2″ strips from my already-cut stash and strings of varying widths from my strings bins. Have ordered a few pieces of your fabric. Will use this for a charity quilt for a foster teen in a youth home.

  12. I’m going to start cutting the stips, but I’ll have to go buy some of your material to partake in the challenge. We’ll see how far I get on this one. I cut the 2.5 squares for the Hip to be square, but never started sewing them yet….another project I guess.

  13. Always up for a good scrap quilt challenge! Will pick up some of your fabric on my trip to Lancaster tomorrow. Please count me in.

  14. I have just retired, so I plan on making 8 to 10 bed size quilts this year, plus a few wall hangings, aprons, pot holders and table toppers. Last year I made 4 quilts. I love quilting and sewing!!

  15. I’ve already got some of your fabric jelly role. I’m in!! Is that all I need to do? Do I need to register somewhere?

  16. I just started quilting, only made three so far. Therefore, I don’t have enough scraps! In time I will!

  17. Since I didn’t have any of your fabric I have some on its way! Lol. I’ve been told I have a problem!

  18. Missed getting in on this challenge but I am loving this block. I see great possibilities for using it as placemats that I promised to make for a friend……. Will you be posting another challenge soon? Love your inspiration. Thanks

  19. I love all your fun fabrics. I started a wonky log cabin in a class in January and the fabrics were so bright and cheery in the dull winter days. Thanks again for all that you do. 🙂

  20. Pat, I like your fabrics but do not have any. Are they sold in the UK, and, if they are, who sells them. Thanks.

  21. Hi Pat,
It certainly has been a while since I sent off an email to you. I am so glad you finally found Moda’s Whitewashed cottage. I too am in love with it but I have a few things first to get finished before I start cutting into more fabrics. I don’t know if I’m up for another challenge plus I don’t have much in the way of scraps. I’d be happy to recieve some of yours if I was lucky enought. Being an international that pretty well cuts me out????

  22. Ouch! I’m a wannabe! I’ve made a couple of doll sized quilts, but years ago! I want this to be the year I make a couple of baby quilts– for grandbabies.

  23. Good evening Pat Sloan, I am currently working two mystery quilts, vacation and another, as well as continuously making baby receiving blankets and doll quilts those are my livelihood. I am curiously wondering how the heck one signs in for your giveaways. I have read through my email and these pages over again, but each link I’ve used gets me back to the home blog page. Oh well, I guess I am not meant to have your scrap stash. LOL love the blended colors that you have in that bundle.

  24. Sorting through my scrap pile – still. Have some strips that are at least 25 years old. Should be interesting.

  25. well, for this year I have 20 planned, but it seems that I always get extras to fit in–new babies, retirement. unfortunately, I don’t have any of your fabric and I haven’t seen any that will go with what I already have. I am going to use this block to make one of the many on my plate.

  26. I’m IN!! love to use my scraps for something like this – fast fun quick and easy peasy!! 😀

  27. I am ready to start cutting my strips! I just ordered some of your “sweet life” fabrics so I can have them ready in case I don’t win your giveaway!

  28. I have all my 2.5 strips ready, rolled on rollet paper rolls. I’m been organizing for months can I join

  29. I am going to give this a try although not a good time…preparing for new granddaughter with quilt, baby shower, etc.

  30. You are going to get me in sooo much trouble. I don’t have any of your fabric yet. But I really want to do this! #donttellmyhusband

  31. I am new to quilting so I haven’t made a quilt yet. I have started two. I see many that I would love to do from you site. I do plan on doing one with your fabrics. They all seem to look beautiful when done. I really love your block of the month quilt.

  32. would love to but I am a new quilter and am still working on a reversible quilt as you go I started 2 years ago
