Pat Sloan: String Bean Challenge

Ready for my second 2015 Quilt Challenge? Most of my challenges this year will involve using up your STASH.. this is a GOOD thing right? Because then you have more ROOM for new things.. like my fabric… wink!

The last challenge was called 'Hip to be Square'... I'm taking you from square to strips this time with my 'String Bean' challenge!

So why the name? As I am typing this it's snowing, and this is a variation of a logcabin block in a quilt I made that is LONG and SKINNY… so I thought String Bean was a fun way to describe it!

The Challenge Details..

  • Cut a lot of scraps into 2.5" strips. Use up left over jelly rolls, ends of Fat Quarters, extra scraps. If you are super adventurous, use random widths!
  • Use my block pattern for this Logcabin block (see below)
  • THE ONE CRITERIA – Use some pieces of MY fabric lines in your quilt top. note the word PIECES… so get into your stash and cut some strips of my fabric to add in!
  • Between Mar 5 and April 19 start sewing String Bean blocks
  • By April 19 make a crib size or larger quilt TOP to share!! Woohoo! I will put a page up on April 30 for you to share your quilt TOP (note the word top, although i will give extra brownie points for it being quilted).

Between now and then I'm going to post some options, inspirations, and have some photo sharing so we can share our progress

  1. would love to try this challenge; here’s hoping I can find time (my Dad’s in hospital so that’s where time disappears these days!)

  2. Aw , your going to have me cut into some of my yardage from Bobbins and Bits that I have been saving? No wait , maybe there is an extra piece left over from my vacation blocks!, I’ll check them first! Going to gather my beans now.

  3. Thank you for this new challenge, Pat.
I was side tracked for the past two months making new upholstery cushions for my daughter’s vintage trailer.
I am ready to quilt now😄

  4. Started cutting tonight….I have one piece of your fabric, but I love it and don’t want to cut it!!!! Arrrrgggggg……Oh Well!!

  5. So looking forward to using up my scraps! Love your new line. Ordered some tonight. Can’t wait to get started

  6. I will do the challenge but won’t be able to include your fabric (SSDI income allows deeply discounted fabrics only). I commend you for asking for inclusion of your fabrics after all the work you do for us. I LOVE and APPRECIATE that you offer the challenges and I look forward to seeing the works of others. Guess I better get started :).

  7. I do have so many scraps that I can do this. It’s always a dilemma — what pattern to try next. So, since this should be fast and is a baby quilt, count me in!

  8. I just saw your fabric line today at a local quilt store and now will go back and buy it tomorrow.

  9. I’m in! While I was looking at your website, I recognized some very familiar fabric! Yeah!!! I already have a nice supply of yardage Bits and Pieces by Pat A Sloan!!! Now to get busy!

  10. Pat – am going to do the challenge minus your fabric, sorry to say, just can’t buy anymore fabric right now. Going to use up what I have in my stash. Thanks for the challenge though!

  11. Well I don’t believe I have any Pat fabric so I am out but will use the idea as I have a panel with blocks in that shape and I need some “fill” blocks …. so I thank you!!!!

  12. I thought I posted this question, but I think it vanished???? Anyway, just checking if we have to use the String Bean pattern or can we create our own design using the strips? Thanks!

  13. Just ordered your One for you…jelly roll so I can play along. I didn’t have any of your fabric. Can’t wait to get started.

  14. Pamela I do have a quilt along for my pattern The Sweet life!

  15. Does Joann’s sell your fabric? I don’t have any of your material and not sure where I can get some besides online.
I have a jelly roll that I have been looking for something to do with it.

  16. Sounds like fun. I’ll see how far I get with this one. If nothing else my scraps are going to be organized!

  17. I just found out about you a couple of months ago and all the shops around me are sold out of your fabric. This included Hancock’s of Paducah!!

  18. I was soooo hoping for a strip challenge this time! Have tons of strips to use, and have been wanting to make a strippy quilt for quite a while. Love the name, too! String bean, here we go!

  19. This is right up my alley! String quilts are one of my specialties. I think I already have a couple of blocks started. Thanks for this new challenge.

  20. Looks like fun. I’ll try to find some of your fabric at the local quilt store. (I saw some of your things when Alex with Aurifil was there. Fantastic!)

  21. I adore your completed string bean quilt. Its gorgeous. I love the greens and pinks!
The Sweet Life collection is completely adorable! Will there be a quilt along with these fabrics? I hope so.

  22. I would like to try this challenge. I have ‘Bits and Pieces” and “Eat Your Vegtables” and “Sweet Life. I guess I can give it a good try and have some fun.

  23. I want to do this. I am trying to find some fat quarters of bobbins and bits but can’t find any. Can anybody help? Please

  24. Yes. Because I already have lots of scraps cut in strips and I was thinking about doing this exact thing-except more lika jelly roll race quilt but with a twist!

  25. I am going to try to do this! It will be a combination of my scraps and “One for you, one for me” jelly roll strips. I like the looks of this block and I think it will make a sweet quilt of any size. I still have my Hip to be Square project to finish which WILL happen soon!

  26. I just did a baby blanket with 2 1/2″ strips.. I think I will enter it when I do my border, etc… Love these challenges!!

  27. This sounds like fun but I don’t own any of your fabrics yet. Do you sell something like a scrap bag?

  28. Spent 3 days of retreat reducing my scrap bin to strips and squares. I only got about 1/2 of it pressed and 1/3 of it cut. I see more cutting for me before anything else. Pat, I’ll have to specifically go looking for your fabric lines. I tend to purchase whatever strikes my fancy that is on sale – have to stay within budget. Know I have some. May have to pull something from the mystery quilt. Little pieces, tiny pieces even.

  29. I have some cut strips, lots in fact. And I really like your quilt. Even though I do not have time for a new project I will have to really move forward. I still have all my squares cut and organized by color sitting under my ironing board. My next leader and ender project.
