First a true confession, because I’m a real person just like you, I have a seriously long date with Jack on this quilt top.

I will do another post to share about that, it was EPIC, believe me, I’m glad I fixed it.

This quilt is not too big to quilt yourself. Here are some tips on how to approach it

  • First quilt top to bottom between the blocks for all the blocks, and inside the inner border. This locks the quilt in a grid and makes it shift less
  • I love accenting the chain, so quilt corner to corner for the chain.

Next is Quilting the blocks, they are too big to leave un-quilted. You can approach this as freemotion quilting or just use your walking foot like I have in my book. You have to turn it more with your walking foot but it’s doable.

  • Take it one block at a time. I like to ouline features like stars, the wreath, block units
  • Then do a bit of freemotion in the background
  • OR do echo outlines around the first outlines with your walking foot.

  1. Love this quilt Merry and Bright. It was fun quilting along with you and the group! It was also keeping my mind busy while my son was planing and moving to another state! 😊
    Thank you Pat

  2. I love the merry and bright blocks
Can’t wsit fir the out of this world blocks
Thanks for a chance to win

  3. My blocks are done and working on the setting blocks now a little slow on the uptake, i only learned about this 2 months ago, but made my grandkids a lap quilt first by hand in the car, since i am homeless. I quilted one and tied one off in my front seat steering wheel and all. Then in library too. I am # 144

  4. I LOVE the instruction you have provided for quilting our Merry and Bright quilts ourselves! Mine is already on its way to the longarm quilter for an allover snowflake design. I had made a table runner out of block 5 and quilted around the squares and border and the trees, so that was similar. My issue is space around my machine for anything much larger than a table runner. I have loved seeing everyone’s progress and finished tops. This was a very fun sew along and I am looking forward to the new ones in 2019.

  5. Sooooo beautiful! All the quilts are great. I am still getting the material for the borders but have the rest done and can’t wait to post.

  6. The only fabric I bought was for the border and the back. What fun to use up bits I have saved for ages. Wish I could have figured out how to rotate the photo. Merry Christmas to all.

  7. I decided to do a slight variation of quilting in a round. I will take one of my small star cookie cutter and then ring around it as the base to make larger and larger star shaped.

  8. Pat, I am really loving this quilt and am way behind. But trying to catch up because I would like it done for Christmas. And this is only the 5th!!!!!. With trips, sickness and house water repairs not much sewing has been done. But love how much fun the blocks are and choosing colors and etc. And easy to do.. Love your patterns. Even if I make mistakes they aren’t too bad and usually easy to fix. Keep up the good work and positive vibes for us out here in quilt land. Thanks Rosie P> S. I love Samplers. They are definitely my favorites. Do not like repeating the same block too much!!!!!!
