It was so hard to fit in all the Christmas memories, old and new, that I wanted to share. I think I might have to do a 2nd Christmas Sew along some day!

I decided the Stocking was my last story to weave into this quilt. Christmas stockings are magical to me. We had the chance to hang them up early, constantly peek in them and then on Christmas Morning the discovery of little gems was irresistible! I think we looked in the stocking first every year.

Over time I’ve made stockings to hang with a Garden theme, Halloween, Valentines, and others. Put them on the knob of a drawer, the handle of the door, and your Fireplace mantle.

I have a tutorial to round out this block, Let’s get to it!

  • I really wanted this big buffalo plaid for the stocking
  • To see how it would look I cut the alternate strips and placed on top to audtion
  • Opt A – straight is kind of boring
  • Opt B – on point is fabulous!
  • Le me show you how to cut strips so the plaid is on point

  • Line up the right side of the ruler as show with the fabric ‘on point’ under it. You are going from corner to corner in a square of the plaid
  • Cut it long enough for the pattern.. a bit longer is better
  • Pic 2 – Now cut along the top so you have a chunck on point

Subcut the strips needed.

I did 3 plaid strips, You could switch that up and do just 2 plaid and 3 of another print.

  • SHARE your quilt block at the END!
  • In each pattern I have a memory or story of my own. When You share your block at my Facebook group, or when you leave me a comment after posting your block, share YOUR memory with me!

  1. YEs, you can go to Block 17 and scroll down. You will see all the previous blocks and links to the patterns

  2. This was a fun sew along. We would get a
Stocking filled with essentials like a new tooth brush
    and candy canes candy cigarettes!
And an orange. We always had a big family
Christmas Eve party with a visit from Santa
And a special gift. Thanks Pat.

  3. Dear Pat, hello from rainy London. Just wanted to say you very much for sharing the Merry and Bright sew along. I have thoroughly enjoyed taking part. I have a lot of your books and seen your sew alongs before but never actually done one before and always wished I had when I had seen the end result! Really glad I did this time! You’ve got me hooked! Really looking forward to the next one! (Sorry been a bit rubbish at uploading photos but will do it. Promise!). Wishing you and your family a nice holiday season.

  4. I love Christmas stockings, too. One year I was fooling with my kids and said that the Easter Bunny was coming that night. Of course, they thought I was absolutely bonkers!! Imagine their surprise on Christmas morning when they opened their stockings and, along with the traditional orange, there was a hard-boiled egg. That became one of our traditions after that. And I also remember the books of life savers – lots of fun memories.

  5. Thanks–I went back and looked at the setting block and the only measurement is the 2″ on the outer border of the setting block itself. But it looks like the first border is 2″ and based on the overall dimensions of the quilt, I think the outer border is 6″, so that is what I’m going with. I’d be interested in knowing what others are doing. I’ve loved working on this quilt! Can’t wait to see it done!

  6. I totally agree with you! I really, really enjoyed doing this for some reason and I, too, hope she does another one next year. I made mine out of Christmas fabric I had and I still have a lot left (maybe for 2 more even!) LOL

  7. Go back to week 6 where she told us about the layout. I believe it was the beginning of September. But anyway, in the layout and setting blocks, she gives the sizes of the borders she was using. It is up to you if you want to change them!!! Hope that helps you.

  8. Christmas stockings mean a lot to me. My mother-in-law always had stocking night for the little ones and not so little ones. She filled on stocking and gave you the empty one and then you had to find the mate to it by tree lights. So much fun for all. And yes I do remember books of lifesavers. That was a Christmas tradition when I was growing up.

  9. Love this block. Yes, Pat, you’ll need to do another Christmas QAL next year. We still need an angel, santa, candy canes, wrapped gift, etc. 🙂 Thank you so much for providing the QAL.

  10. Hi Pat, did I miss anything you posted about the borders and what size you made them? If so, I apologize… just wondering what you are putting on for borders. Thanks!

  11. Love all the blocks and loved the weekly quilt a long. Can’t wait to finish and post it. Thanks so much Pat.
