The layout has the blocks and a border, see next photo

There are a few things I want to point out so you have all the info and can decided how YOU want your setting blocks to look. I’ve shown you TWO ways it can look above and in the following video.

  • Several people wrote me in the beginning as they could not figure out how was I getting ‘that number of blocks’ into a layout, my reveal explains it!
  • For each of the following block patterns, the diagram above will be at the end & I’ll put the featured block in place.

  • This video should help you to make a decision on how you want you setting block to look

TIPS – READ THIS

  • The outer border of the block is 2″ wide, which means it’s NOT the same as the inside 9patch
  • I have circled this on the PDF pattern to remind you
  • I decided to start cutting all the blocks at once so I can sew them as I sew other things. If you have never done that .. see what I do HERE
  • PRO TIPUpgrade your rotary cutter TODAY this one is easy to change the blade and in 3 cool colors

Here is a photo of your pattern … these are 2″ wide pieces

… incase you miss it in the PDF (wink!)

Here is my big decision as I told you about in the video.  I did not sew this quilt in advance, I sew only a few blocks ahead.

My original vision was to make scrappy centers like the one on the top right. Since the fabric line I selected has a lot of darks, I have decided I’d rather have my blocks with more lights so I need another 1/2 yard of the basic light fabric that I got extra

In my supply list (FIND IT HERE) I suggest you get a basic, which means you can get more of that now if you are like me and want more lights

  1. I love that you gave us the setting blocks early so we can sew the rows as we go! I know when I sew that last block I am ready to finish the quilt and not having to make the setting blocks. Thank you!!

  2. Is there any way I can get all the patterns for Merry and Bright? I have procrastinated and I would really like to do it I tried your instructions and couldn’t get it to work. The older patterns may not be available now – don’t know but I would appreciate it if I could get the other copies. Thank you. Barbara Bayer

  3. Pat am doing my quilt all from my stash!!! Need to down some of it! I love it, this is my first sew along, and now I have joined another one, Save the Bees> I have to say my blocks are not coming up 9.5 X 9.5, but I will make it work! Thanks

  4. Pat,
Thank you for the layout update and video. My question is since the layout blocks will not all be the same, will you show them as you make them fo go with the other blocks so we can copy them. Will there be instructions like the other blocks? Personally I want to make my quilt exactly as yours. I’m not good at figuring out what goes with what. I follow the pattern as closely as possible. I have some vision problems as well as being on oxygen 24/7 so I pretty much order everything on line since they have so many great quilt kits available. I know it’s good to use your own imagination when creating quilts but unfortunately I can no longer do that. So I’m relying on your super wonderful imagination. It’s fun following along with you and yes this is my first time with your group.
    Thank you

  5. Hi Pat, I love the Merry & Bright quilt project. I am newly retired and now have time to quilt. Am refreshing my skills and learning alot. Thank you! I would like your expert help with finding the right border fabric. Fat Quarter was out of the 2 yards of C7336-Red Plaid, (Christmas Delivery) and said they would let me know when they got more in. They failed to notify me. When I went to order more of the light color to do the setting blocks (Looks like fun!), I also search for the Border print again (C7336-RED Plaid) and ordered the 2 yards. They informed me today that they have only 3 pieces left (7/8, 3/4 and 1/2 yard). I know I could piece it,but prefer not to. Do you have a suggestion for a similar yardage that could be the border. . . .(there are so many shades of red, I do not feel comfortable to choose over the internet). Also, what is your suggestion for the fabric to be used in the inner border. (I am using all fabric as you have suggested for all blocks as my free inner creativity has not kicked in yet. Thank again!

  6. Loved the video and would enjoy more of them! Have so much to learn about putting patterns and colors together, so this was MOST helpful. Thanks.

  7. Thank You Pat for this charming quilt pattern plus the perfect setting! The highlighted notes on the pattern will be especially helpful to those of us who may wait awhile to start setting! You Are The Best!!!

  8. Pat you have so much patience with people who don’t bother to read your information and instructions, you couldn’t make it clearer, yet they practically want you to stitch the quilt for them! and all the patterns are free.
Thanks for the videos as well

  9. Fun blocks! Thank you! Are you planning on making all the setting blocks the same? Will there be enough of the gray presents, green floral and red sprigs Christmas Delivery fabric as ordered from the original supply list if I do this?

  10. You select how you want them to look Patti. See the ones shared in the quilt show so far.. plus you saw I shared 2 different blocks so you can visualize the look.

  11. I am excited to see that there will be plenty of sewing waiting for me this weekend when the work week ends. This quilt is exciting. I can’t wait to see what the end will bring. I just love a mystery!

  12. If I am understanding this correctly, the setting blocks don’t all have to be the same in the color, just in the layout of the block, right?

  13. Thank you Pat Sloan for making it clear for me. There are two different centers for the layout blocks. That makes sense now. Can’t wait to se the next block. The videos help me understand better what to do. Love sewing along with you and the group.
