** Hometown Charms! Block #2 **

Street games are fun! Your 'street' might be like mine, the parking area in our apartments.  Lots of great memories made there playing with the neighborhood kids.

*** Sloan Zone Ambassador team *** with their Street Games!

  • Kathy – Playing street games like kick the can, hide and seek with the whole neighborhood. The old men gossiping at the local pit stop every morning. Walking to school with a group of neighbor kids. Getting donuts on Sunday morning after church. The local church carnivals. "
  • Kendall – Summer afternoon cricket in the street. Bins were used for the stumps and you could always here the warning cry “CAR!!” being called out from various other locations. It was fun.
  • Bobbie – street games: in my tiny village-riding our bikes at night and avoiding the area under the street lights because there were so many June bugs <ick> And Hide and seek in the corn fields… loved it
  • Carrie F – We played kickball in the street (really an alley) The rules were similar to baseball but you could throw the ball to hit someone out. So maybe a combo of baseball and dodge-ball. I remember the ball was the size of a basketball but softer….until you got hit with it then it stung your bare skin. ouch.
  • Suzanne – The group of kids(six) on my road played wiffleball at the end of the road where it was a perfect V shape. Most games ended when two boys, brothers, would argue and get into a fight. It was getting close to dinner time by then. We also played hockey on a small pond in winter. We would have a small fire to see as it would get dark so early.
  • Laura – I don't remember playing any games in the street. If I did, I would have gotten into trouble for it. 😊 We would kick a stone on our walk to school to see if we could kick it all of the way there.
  • Barbara – We would jump rope in the street. Double dutch and regular . Fun memories.
  • Lyleen – Lots of bike riding and rollerskating at the school across the street.
  • Melissa – We had a small hill in the middle of our street. It was just enough to give you good momentum for your skateboard. We would line up and race.

  1. Looking for the question to answer for the “85 Thousand” quilt give away. Can’t seem to find it. I’m enjoying your videos. I just finished the “Won’t You Be My Neighbor” quilt with Marvel characters in the windows for my daughter. And an “Oh My Stars” for my new great-granddaughter. Thank you for the free patterns and the encouragement!!

  2. Lived on a farm growing up! Daddy built us our own baseball field! Complete with backstop and drawn base lines! There were 6 of us kids so we almost had our own team but neighbors would come and play! By the way the neighbors happen to be our cousins! In the fall there pickup football games! Even the girls played there weren’t enough boys! But strictly touch football or flag! Mommy wouldn’t put up with us being tackled and you had ti hick th ball from the dude no between the kegs! LOL! Winters my daddy would create us our own ice skating rink so we wouldn’t try skating on the pond that wasn’t safe because of the springs! None of this play time was supervised! But mommy and daddy were always close by!

  3. The 1st house which had neighborhood kids to play with had an alley that we used. One thing we did was link our wagons together to have our own Wagon Train. Being downhill meant we often had spills & I still have scarred knees for remembrance. .

  4. Playing in the streets was our playground! We roller skated, jumproped, played house and tag. We walked to school and firemen would come out to put water on the playground so it could freeze up for ice skating. Being the oldest of 8 kids, us older ones would always be assigned a younger sibling to watch over. So my sister and I needed to share skates, so we’d head over 3 blocks and one would skate at a time. The fire department would come every 4th of July, the streets would be closed to traffic, and our neighbor fireman, Shorty, would bring a ladder truck and the firemen would try to blast a keg with water to cross a line. We were all devastated when Shorty died on the job
later on. This was all in a suburb of Chicago. Best memories ever…
Love the colors for blocks 2. Have bought a wide spectrum of colors for this quilt. Now to quit getting sick so I can start,,,

  5. Hometown Charm blocks are gorgeous! Love the fabric line and choices! The larger size of the strips and the center block make this Log Cabin Block look terrific! Lots of kickball and hide and go seek growing up in my Maryland neighborhood. No playtime in the street or there would have been trouble with our parents! On the Boo Crew Pillow, I vote for the floral. I love the dominance of purple, a favorite color for me, in this Boo Crew Block. I have never done needlepoint. It has been over 50 years since I did crochet, but I relearned the Granny Square block while watching the U.S. Open Semi-Finals–which had our player, Frances Tiafoe, from Maryland!
