Number 10 is super fun with the star. For those not adding the birds, this is the block before I added mine.

Personally I love that I get to add another bird, I feel SPRING around the corner, the Robins and all kind of other birds have been showing up at my feeders.. yeah for spring!

I wanted to share a few things about applique

A few tips from my applique book

  • I usually stitch with 50wt Aurifil, which is the same weight I piece with so it’s very economical to collect that weight as you can use it for piecing, applique and machine quilting.
  • I use very light weight, easy to open and close scissors. This is my favorite pair. I recommend having GREAT tools that are ergonomic, and these are it
  • Since I cut the center out of my shapes before fusing, I can trace the beak inside (step by step photos of that in my book)
  • When I audition thread, one strand across the fabric lets me see it perfectly. That peachy orange is great on the pinkish red.. who knew!

I wanted to show what my angled corners look like, in my book I have step by step photos on how to do this and inside curves.

I did a bit of fussy cutting for the stem on this one…

In the full quilt the first stem is not centered.. trying to decide it if bothers me enough to change it.. see below.. would you change it?

I have a 2nd version of this underway. I decide to concentrate on finishing the Christmas fabric first. THEN I’ll reboot this sew along with the other fabric. One of the quilts is a gift, I’ll have to decide which version… mmmm … wonder which it will be?

I want to be sure everyone has a chance to own these great irons! If you have been waiting on the pink one, it’s back in stock!

I did a video and article about it HERE

The color differences are

  • Yellow & Pink are IDENTICAL except color
  • Blue is less expensive, so the 20% off is fantastic. It has these differences
    • 8’6″ cord instead of 12′
    • Stainless Steal soleplate instead of Chomium soleplate
    • 8 min auto shut off instead of 30 min with the pink & yellow

  1. Pat, I would not change the tree trunk. I am doing this sew-a-long and using the same fabric as you and I love everything about it. I love house blocks and I am in love with the Christmas fabric. By the way, I too survived the nor’easter. I live on Cape cod Massachusetts and the winds gusted to 91 mph. No house damage but lost power for 24 hrs. Could have been much worse. Glad to hear you are ok.

  2. I wouldn’t change a thing. Took me quite awhile to realize you were talking about the dots on the trunk. Artistically it’s better to not have a rigid center line.

  3. I wouldn’t change the 1st stem/tree trunk. I think it looks like moss or the shadow and highlight on one side of the trunk. It’s like the way the direction that the sun is hitting the tree. It’s up to you tho’, if it bothers you then change it. Love, love your neighborhood!🏘🏠🏫🏤💒🏡 I just purchased 2 of your books!

  4. If you are referring to the polka dot tree trunk next to the red house with the polka dot roof, I would let it be. The polka dots distract from it being being a tad off of center (if indeed it is). 🙂
