Do you want to see what the Solstice layout is? Plus a bonus layout for you!

Thank you for joining me in making my Solstice quilt! This is a free pattern, and today I’m sharing a photo of the layout!

This quilt is my journey to do a project from the first day of Winter Solstice to the First day of the Summer solstice. That is 182 days this year. I decided on 25 blocks of various sizes with a bit of applique thrown in the mix. My blocks are not hard as I want the joy of just cutting squares, rectangles and making HST units. When creating each block I am thinking about my own life. Maybe something sparks my interest like Block 7 did where I was looking at old photos and a memory came to surface.

My signature quilt layouts are asymmetrical, with blocks and applique. I’ve been doing these for years and years, starting with my signature quilt pattern Ma-Ma’s Garden to my Brambleberry friends &. This is pretty much how I have designed since the beginning. That is why my final layout is not straight forward, but has big and small sections and makes me very happy to look at.

BUT… I know a lot of you LOVE symmetry.  And even though I’m designing this quilt for myself, I want to give you a present of a bonus layout…

My quilt does not have 25 blocks that are 12.5″ x 12.5″ (12″ finished).  BUT your quilt can!

All you have to do will be to repeat your favorite blocks if you want a 5 x 5 setting. Or… wait until  you see my larger blocks… I will be giving you a challenge to use a portion of my larger blocks for a 12.5″ blocks, it will be fun to see what the ‘all 12″ block’ group does with my challenge!

I hope you enjoy this, If my layout is not your cup of tea, you have a second one. No need to tell me WHY you picked one over the other.. just make blocks, make a quilt.. have fun.

My plan is to have cuttings directions in Feb.

  4. I am so intrigued by the big yellow blocks. They are going to be stupendous. I know it! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I have been inspired to quilt more.

  5. i’m glad you finally found me Kara~! I’ve been designing for almost 20 yrs, I have written 33 books, many fabric lines, I run a talk show.. i do lots of fun things!

  6. I am in love with the asymmetrical layout plan and want to make it. I have enough symmetry with other quilts so this will be a welcome addition. I love the way you give us choices and as I am one that likes to be a little bit different from the crowd. Glad to have found your web page when I started quilting three years ago.

  7. I love the asymmetrical layout and am thinking I’ll make the blocks that are used for this layout! Thanks, Pat, for your great posts and articles!!

  8. Love the asymmetrical layout! And as I’m going very scrappy the blocks of squares will help tie it all together. Haven’t posted any pix yet but I will eventually!

  9. Hi, I only see space for 20 blocks, not 25 in the asymmetrical design?? Am I missing something? Love the layout.

  10. Loks great either way. Although I like the asymmetrical version the most. Fun and mixed up, just like me. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Thank you, thank you! All I can say is “wow”. I love the asymmetrical layout. This is way out of my comfort zone but I really want to try to challenge myself. Your instructions give me the confidence to do this. Thank you for all that you do for us!

  12. Since I am new to “Pat Sloan” ~ ~ I was not familiar with your wonderful assymetrical layouts (which I L O V E ) ~ ~ so I am very pleased to see your creative layout and will be excited to see how close I can come! I have not been successful with BOM things because I don’t like the clutter of them, but am determined to do this without clutter and start with the new block each Wednesday. So far, so good 🙂 Thank you for sharing and for the advance preview of your layout. It gives me renewed incentive to continue. It’s a great project all of the way around and I’m doing it in blues and greens, finally.

  13. I love the asymmetrical layout. My piecing is getting so much more precise thanks to you and the free quilt along projects you share. Thank you for sharing your love of this art form.

  14. OK, the asymmetrical layout is way out of my comfort zone……I love it!!! This Solstice adventure is challenging me to use up my stash and with each block, I get to remember the original quilt I made and who it was for; the joy in presenting it to them. What a great project! Thank you, Pat, for all you do. You are amazing!

  15. Thank you Pat! I’m challenging myself by making 3 blocks weekly each with different themed fabric. I’ll be able to try both layouts.

  16. Well! I’ve only made symmetrical quilts BUT I think I need to jump out of my comfort zone and try the asymmetrical layout!!!! I LOVE it! It’s going to be bright and shiny, I can just tell! I’m so excited for this journey.

  17. I like both settings but favor the asymmetrical more. I however want to make it rectangular. I will work with your layout and tweak it to the size I want. You gave all of us some great blocks and setting ideas. Thankyou very much. I am looking forward to the end result.

  18. Hola Pat Sloan. Como sigo para un largo tiempo con la pierna mal, aún no he empezado sus bloques del Solsticio. Pero me gustan tanto que dejaré el tamaño pequeño para un mini edredrón. Muchas gracias por todo su arte. Saludos.

  19. Thank you Pat for the layout! I LOVE the asymmetrical one and will follow along. I am so excited to have you teach us along the way how to create your beautiful quilts. I have 2 of your books, the follow along helps me. I have enjoyed making the 7 blocks so far. I am a Splenderette! and after sewing the little 6.5″ squares, a 12.5 seems so BIG and easy!!!
Thank you again for the layout. I am using a fat quarter bundle of Cotton+Steel Les Fleurs and now I know I need to buy some more of it to keep going.
    THanks.

  20. Thank you for both layouts. You are so sweet to consider the needs of both kinds of quilters and what they like. Thank you for all the work you do in giving us these wonder quilts to make.

  21. Love the asymmetrical layout – think I will be using that one. These blocks are so much easier than the Splendid Sampler. I’m way behind on that sew along but getting them done as I can. Love these groups.

  22. Your asymmetrical designs were what first drew me to you in 1998 with your snowman, Seymore, and I have loved you and your designs ever since. I love the asymmetrical layout. It’s so you! Thank you for sharing.

  23. dumb question I am assuming there will be something pieced in the white and tan and yellow square areas in your diagram?

  24. Did I read your article right, you are going to give us patterns to make the larger blocks as well? So I don’t need to try to figure out what to make for the 36 inch block?!

  25. love the asymmetrical lay out, so excited, don’t know if I like the idea I have to wait so long to finish this quilt lol, want to do it now!!! Thank you for sharing these quilts with us

  26. Pat
Thanks for sharing your design! I love the asymmetrical layout. My design style is to make blocks I like, put them on my design wall and see how they can fit together, like a puzzle! Looking forward to the rest of the blocks!

  27. I have decided to force myself out of the symmetrical box and try to go with the very interesting asymmetrical design. TRY is the key word!!!

  28. I love the asymmetrical lay out am curious about the larger areas what I would put in them. Do excited to see both lay outs will have to make a decision which one to do. I could do both as I have these blocks going in four color schemes

  29. I am really drawn to the asymmetrical layout and excited to see my quilt take shape. Thank you so much for designing and sharing this project. I needed a respite from complicated, tedious projects and this is the perfect “quiltcation”. I’m loving it!

  30. I love your asymmetrical layout. I am usually a symmetrical gal myself, but this one speaks to me. In the year 2000 I went to my first quilt show, AQS in Paducah. Being an experienced clothing seamstress, I didn’t hesitate to jump right in and buy a quilt kit. When I got home, I discovered there was no pattern enclosed. The quilt on display was asymmetrical. I had no idea how to proceed. My poor little kitty cat materials have sat for 17 years. Now I can bring them out and let them shine. Thank you! Will be starting block 1 this week

  31. Pat, I am a symmetrical person but your asymmetrical layout intrigues me. I just might challenge my self and try that version!
Will you be sending measurements for the large blocks?

  32. I would like to see something that is not a square. So many ideas I have that a rectangle would be more useable

  33. I like the Asymmetrical Layout so much. Need something other than traditional. Not that I am into the modern quilts but this layout is a great change.

  34. Asymmetrical for me! That will be wider than I need, so I may need to adjust a bit, but I’m looking forward to it.

  35. Thanks Pat! I think I will try the asymmetrical layout. That will be a new thing for me. Old dog trying new tricks!

  36. I am very much a symmetrical person but I am in love with the first layout. I can’t wait to see what fun will fill the larger blocks. I am all in! Thank you for sharing this.

  37. Thank you for sharing Pat…I’m going to enjoy this project as I am a stickler for simple and traditional…. Going out of my comfort zone
