Join me on the APQ Quilt Along, it’s strips and blocks this year.. so fun!

Are you enjoying my new site ‘I Love to Make Quilts’?  I sure am!! It’s SEW exciting to see your Solstice blocks pop up on Wednesday!  My goal is a twice a week post for this website, the second will be either another fun quilt along I am hosting, maybe a cool deal I spotted, or a free pattern!

Each year APQ magazine hosts a Grand Quilt Along and it’s incredible fun to see all the variations! Lots of designers and bloggers join in. (Details)

We start NOW by making one of the 3 patterns, the Blue version is nice BIG squares, the red scrappy version, or at their website you can do one logcabin block, just for a ‘taste’ of it!

I have this bundle of Kate Spain Grand Canal that I want to play with, I love it!

I am kind of a Kate Spain groupie… shhh .. don’t tell anyone

Since what I have right now is a Fat Eight bundle, I might buy a few more 1/2 yd pieces, then I am pretty sure I will convert a few rectangles in the blue version to scrappy strips like the red version..

Question for you….

I am going to leave one color out, which would you remove?

The Goodies!

  1. I love this fabric. But I love all her fabric. Think I would pull the pink. Another great article here and gets us thinking and shopping. I will need to live a long time to make use of my wonderful “collection”. Am so enjoying the solstice blocks. Will be sending photos today of some things I hope. Thanks so much for your encouragement. Hope you are feeling well. Love RYR

  2. I absolutly love, love this fabric….but since you are
pulling only one out…I personally would take out the
pinks/purples! All of the other shades work great
    together!!

  3. I would leave out the light yellow with the leaf pattern. It’s not as interesting as many of the other pieces, or you could take out the lighter blue in the same pattern and not miss it. There seems to be a lot of blue pieces that are nice…

  4. I would leave out the dark purple and the dark blue (straight opposite the blue spool of thread.) These two seem to be a little lost in the company they are keeping.

  5. Im not sure if you are asking to leave out one fabric or one colour group. I think the colours you have chosen work great.
But if you want one fabric colour group gone…I would take out the teal that are mixed in with the yellow group (count from the deep burgundy red..count back 3 and take that teal out that has a deep blue coliseum looking thing and the teal up between the oranges and dark blue. The teal with the arrow type line next to the first dark blue.
If I had to take out just one print…I would take out that blue flowered green back ground and leaves mixed in with the pink. Lower right hand corner. Count over from the deep burgundy red.then pink..then take out that teal flowered one.
Myself though in the end..I would keep going all the way round with varigating the teals from light to dark. No other major colors in it at all.
    Good luck.
    Happy Quilting.

  6. I vote to omit the lavendar/pink. It doesn’t really serve a useful purpose, whereas the orange is balancing the blue green nicely.

  7. I was just reading your article before I left to run over to Quilting Possibilities to drop my machine off for servicing and when I walked in the door Debbie and Jim had a big pile of the magazine out on the counter so I grabbed one.
I think I like your color way but if it were me I’d leave the orange out.
I LOVE the big blue/turquoise quilt on the cover so I think that will be what I make. I might copy and do the same color way!
PS: I’m doing your Solstice quilt along too…..i’m doing red/neutral/black LOVE THE BLOCKS (paront1222 on IG)

  8. Many people are saying the orange, but that’s my favorite color in quilting fabric! I would have to take out the violet piece “if I was forced to!”

  9. Not knowing exactly the pattern is, I would leave out the one with the big flower either the blue or orange one.

  10. My first thought was the orange, but the more I looked at them, I think the pink-purples. I like the oranges with the blues. Either way, I’m with you these are very nice fabrics!

  11. I, too, enjoy all of Kate Spain’s fabric lines. If one color needs to be eliminated, I’d choose the orange! Love the Solstice quilt-along blocks!

  12. I like having the orange in the mix. If it’s a color to be removed, I’d vote for pink. And if it’s just one fabric, then I vote for the very dark pink/red at the lower right. What a great variety of colors and patterns.

  13. I would pull the yellow. I love yellow but the yellow mutes the other textures you have. Many do NOT like orange in general but it is an amazing color to pop dimensions in the other fabrics. You can do a grey scale and see your values but take a shot without the yellow AND one without the orange so you can see what I mean. If you want soft…keep yellow. If you want it to have visual masterpiece people will talk about…then toss yellow and go with orange! 💡✔(you can almost cover the orange and see or cover yellow and see what I mean)

  14. I think it’s all great, I wouldn’t leave out any of the colors… I have learned over the years that those add a little pop to the ones I do love. Even ugly fabrics have a place in quilt blocks. (I used to hate orange until I lived in Italy for 2 years, came home with a whole new appreciation. I still wouldn’t make an orange quilt- but I would use it for accents)

  15. I guess I’d leave out the pink. I do love pink, but I think the other colors could carry this without there being anything missing.
    These are such pretty fabrics!

  16. I would leave out the pink….all the colors balance….but pink seems to be my stand alone for projects this year…it is really pushing me outside my comfort zone.

  17. Orange is good. I would omit either the teal print between the yellows or the teal print with red by the blue.

  18. I would leave out the orange … that may be just me but there is enough little bits of it here and there that the strong pieces don’t need to be present. If however you are a lover of orange you could take the strongest purples out there are about three I think (of either in my opinion) that could be pulled and you would still maintain some of the color without it being the dominant statement. Then again what do I know I am on a journey to make a neutral quilt at the moment……lol…..

  19. If you have to, leave out the orange. The others could survive with out the yellow or the orange but you need the dark blues for contrast. JMHO
