Hi Pat,
I have trouble reading patterns. Sometimes they are so confusing to me and I get frustrated instead of enthusiastic. My friend told me yours are easy to follow so I am here giving them a try. That said I have very limited time so if I do not comment often it is because I am caregiver to my 96yo Mother-in-law who can not see or hear. I will do my best to contribute. Thanks for all you do.

Thanks Pat for your videos and blog. I look forward to it every week. My spot I need to work on at my house is my scrap bag. It’s actually a tote. Mostly small scraps, but I intend to cut them into usable squares, such as 2.5″, 5″, and sewing the smaller strips into “scrap yardage”. I’ve made a few blocks using strings, but have always had the idea to sew strings as I accumulate them, and then the job wouldn’t be as daunting as it currently is!!
I have been on a clean up and clean out kick since Sept. my latest target is my workbench area of the attached garage adjacent to my kitchen. Discarded craft projects, stained lass supplies and tools long abandoned, and yes, a plethora of screwdrivers and wrenches. All in need of sorting.
We lived 1/2 mile from the river where we went ice skating. it was at Mike’s boat house, he always had a big bon fire on the bank for us to warm up by. But there was always the walk home which always made our hands and feet cold. My mother would take our hands and/or feet and put them under her arms. Brrrrrrrrrrrr, she must have loved us a lot.
As a Child growing up in Indianapolis , Indiana.
There was a park in the city with a creek winding through it.AWhen it froze, everyone young and old alike would iceskate all through the park!
Very fond memories!
In the late 70s, there was a winter that froze before there was snow. I lived in Monona, WI, a suburb of Madison. Madison, besides being known as the Capital of Wisconsin, is also known for its four lakes. Lots of ice skating and my favorite winter sport. Well, this particular winter, my friend and I were skating at a designated lagoon that eventually lead to one of the lakes. We decided to follow it because there was no snow to stop us and it had been below zero much of the nights, so we knew it was very safe. Anyway, it was smooth skating until we got to the lake. We never thought about the wind on the lake which causes the waves! The waves were frozen! It made for very rough skating, but a lasting memory of a good friend that would do goofy things with me.
I remember as a teen in the late 50’s (yes, I’m older than dirt..). lol we would go to the pond at night on the weekend and some one always had a car and would shine the headlights on the pond so we could skate . Later we would sometime build a small campfire ad warm up..Great memories..
cheers, maggie
When I was in sixth grade, they made a skating rink right next to the school with a wooden building with benches to sit on so we could put on our skates, but no heat. We could skate during our long lunch recess and also after school. I didn’t have skates, so my grandmother dug out my aunt’s old skates from her closet. I remember being able to ice skate, but I couldn’t roller skate when we were bused to the next town in eight grade.
When my children was young we would skate on the local beaver pond
The community ice skating rink was almost directly across from the house I grew up in. Every day after school my brothers and I would head to the rink to meet up with other town kids to skate. When supper was ready my mom would holler out the front door and we would go home for supper. If our jobs and homework were complete back to the rink we would go for more games of Pom Pom pull away and others. When the train whistle blew my brothers and I would head for home with plans already made to skate the next day. Oh the exercise we got!
I am new here but I do love it Thank you Pat Sloan
I have block 1&2 when does 3 come
One of my favorite winter activities growing up was skating in our back yard. My Dad would make us our own skating rink! Great memories watching him out there “watering” the area he had cleared as we anticipated the rink completion.
I lived in big city. We lived near a park with a pond that was turned into a skating pond in winter. This was in the 60’s. I had to have my homework done and chores done before I could meet my friends at the pond. Just thinking about the memories makes me smile.
Big Hugs Crystal. Sometimes we need to take our time getting back to things. your wonderful friends didn’t give up on you… so nice you have them
awwww.. memories are so crazy, glad you had a buddy that night!
thank you!
memories are so fun.. even those..
oh my!!
that is cool you had your own rink!
In answer to what “challenge” I’m working on right now. Right now I’m dealing with not being motivated to quilt when I get home from working 40 hours a week. My husband of almost 34 years passed away April 27, 2018. He was a quilter like me. Because he was a retired Vietnam veteran, most of the quilts he made were for the Quilts of Valor program at our local Guild.
I found myself ignoring my passion of designing, creating and quilting every night. My Quilter Friends worried when I stopped bring Show-N-Tell and stepping away from Board Offices of the guild. They involved me in every event they could get me to come to and I’ve started spending less time feeling like I’m in a void. I have slowly begun spending time once again on my passion of quilting. Your projects have been a great help, I love doing the BOW and BOM. Thank you for keeping me inspired and for giving of yourself so freely to all of us quilters ho love your sites.
I grew up in Lachine, Quebec where we had outdoor skating rinks. One late afternoon, my little friend that lived next door and I decided to take our skates and walk the 6 blocks to the rink. We went into the building, put on our skates and went out to skate. All of a sudden there were no lights in the building, no lights over the ice, no street lights and when we looked around, no houses had lights. We made our way back into the building, put our boots back on and we walked back home. We held onto each other whole way. I was about 10 years old and little Michelle would probably have been 6. We were never so happy to see our homes as we were that night. Many stories of ice skating over the years, but this was the best one.
Never learned to ice skate but love your block. Trying to keep up.
I received ice skates for Christmas 1 year but didn’t have a place to go ice skating. 🤷🏻♀️ Later as a favor for a friend I agreed to go on a blind date & also because he would take me ice skating. When picked up I told him I didn’t know how to skate & he smiled saying that’s ok. Well, I’ll only say the date did not go well & I was told I was as cold as the ice. 🤦🏻♀️ That was fine with me.
When I was a kid we used to skate on a pond called Miller’s Pond. Once our father dropped my older brother and I off to go skating. We skate for a while but it was really cold so we wanted to go home. There was no way to call, no cell phones back in the early 60’s! We had gone with just our skates on, no shoes or boots, but we had rubber guards for the skate blades. We put the guards on the blades and walked home, it had to be at least a mile that we walked!
Did all the block 1 make the pictures above .
Now ice skating is one winter activity I enjoyed as a child! We lived on a farm and to keep us from skating on the pond or the creek (both to dangerous because of open water) my father would make us a “skating rink” in our field! There was a bug flat field right next to the house. He had turned the field into a baseball diamond for the 6 of us in the summer. It was a labor of love on his part. He would fill big milk cans with water and go out and pour them out on the ground on a supper freezing night! The ground was frozen so the water didn’t just soak in, it laid on top of the ground. After a few nights of pourung out water we had a great safe skating rink!
Another skating story. They even love to ice skate in the south. The city makes a skating rink like the ones used by hocky players! Due to multiple knee surgery I can’t ice skate anymore!😥
