Block #4 is 'The Courthouse'. It is often a major building downtown on main street. And a place many a June bride had a visit, like me!

During our travels we see big and small courthouses and I love the ones on the town square.

TIP:

  • For the fabrics where I purchased extra yardage, I'm cutting into the Fat Quarters first for the blocks.

TIP of the week:

Let's talk fabric selecting. As much as I can try and 'just know' what is right without cutting, sometime the best way to know is to cut the fabric. Case in point is our block this week.

  • The strips can look fabulous before sewing them.
  • But when you put all the strips together they create a block of fabric again for this block. That means having a vision of 'what' the cut up and resewn fabric will look like.
  • The option on the left has the gingham, and I did not want to sew the gingham back together as it would create a messy image to me.
  • On the right I traded gingham for the floral. Which works very well to sew back together.
  • But the navy squares blend in too much.

TIP:

  • The red square would be a fantastic option. But I wanted to see what Green looked like so I could introduce more green into the quilt.
  • Switched the squares to green and I was good to go!
  • My fabric waste was the red gingham strips and the original navy squares. I put those into my '2.5" scrap system'. so they are not wasted.

And the groups! The cheeky fabric on the left feels like I'm sewing with cotton candy, I love it! Click the photo if you want a larger image.

  1. Block 4 was a challenge for me for some unknown reason. Maybe it’s my sewing. I’m happy this one is done!

  2. My favorite picnic food is Bean Salad. When my dad made it, it was 3-bean. When I make it now, it’s 4 or 5-bean, depending what o have on hand.
Also LOVED grandma’s handmade German potatoes salad, but nobody’s comes out like hers did.

  3. My favorite picnic food is a tie between potato salad and baked beans. Nothing better with hamburgers and hot dogs on the grill.

  4. I love seeing everyone’s blocks. I like to study the colors used in the blocks, then the placement of the colors & why the fabrics work together or don’t work together. Such an invaluable learning experience without cutting into my fabrics!

  5. I love the brighter line of fabric but don’t have much of that type. Do you have any idea how much fabric is enough for this project? Would jelly rolls, layer cake, or charm squares work?
    Thanks. U

  6. Pat, I am with you on the choice of pickles for a picnic! This year we are growing pickling cucumbers in our garden and making pickles about once a week. So far I have made dill pickle spears (my sweet husband cut them for me) and bread & butter pickle slices. We’ve tried the B&B pickles and they are delicious! My husband even told me that he usually doesn’t care for sweet pickles but he loves these. The dill pickles take about 6 weeks to be fully pickled. This morning I picked 28 cucumbers, gave 5 large ones away and will be pickling the rest. I plan to pickle some gherkins later in the summer…have loved those since I was a child. Starting on my courthouse block now, bye.

  7. I’m doing 2 color ways! One kids one vintage floral look. I don’t remember a court house in any of the towns I lived in! They were all to small. But here’s a quick story about going to our local night court recently. I had a car accident got a ticket. When I showed up at night court no one there. So I just mailed in my ticket with a letter to the DA explaining what had happened! Sent in the certificate showing I had taken the defensive driving course. Got a letter in the mail a few weeks later telling me my ticket was reduced and the amount of the fine. Paid it and moved on. When I got my car insurance bill a few months later for my premuims had gone dwn because I took the driver course and the accident was forgiven!
My kids color way has lady bugs running up the steps, Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall and somebody running away with a pig.
    Liability case
    Criminal case
And watch out there are “bugs” listening in! LOL

  8. In my downtown, our courthouse was built in 1772-1773 and is one of the oldest courthouses still in use in America. Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s father practiced law in the courthouse.

  9. love the idea of ufo Friday..could be a motivator, maybe?? my fav picnic food is deviled eggs and pickled okra..anything else can go with them..

  10. I like fried chicken and potato salad for a picnic. You can’t go wrong with watermelon for dessert. Of course, you need a checked tablecloth on which to dine. Fun times!

  11. Not so many picnics these days, replaced with backyard bbq’s. Love guacamole and chips. So good. The new favorite though is my son-in-laws jalapeno poppers. Everyone looks forward to those while we wait on the yummy tri tip on the bbq.
Love this main street project. I look forward to each weeks block. Thank you!

  12. Pat
Is today your anniversary? It sure sounds like that from what you said about the courthouse. If so, Happy Anniversary!!!

  13. Hi Pat,
I am finally getting to finishing my Bee Happy Quilt. I’d like to quilt it row by row and I seem to remember something about how you would do that. I just can’t seem to find it now. Did you comment on that or am I just daydreaming?

  14. There was no courthouse in my little town – in order to go to one, we had to drive about a 1/2 hour to a bigger town and it felt like we were going to the “city” to get there – lol

  15. Years ago while on vacation in Wyoming we visited a small town’s courthouse. Those western highways where you let the speedometer climb had a trooper waiting off to the side at the bottom of the hill. So backtracked we did to pay the fine at the town he directed us to. The courthouse was at the town square & while the fine was being paid I studied the jail cells off to the side. Reminded me of the courthouse on the Andy Griffith Show.

  16. I just love picnics!! And of course I can’t just have one favorite food. But I just love home made potato salad! And mine is a recipe that was my moms and it has dill pickles in it. I love dill pickles. I also love fried chicken and of course that favorite fruit of summer, watermelon!! Also like the idea that you want to have a UFO Friday, I think it’s encouraging to help get our ufo’s finished. I also like doing hex’s blocks. It’s fun to get ideas from you!

  17. I like your “Cheeky” fabrics blocks, they feel softer & prettier & happier than the other darker fabrics. Just my personal preference.

  18. I think this is where I’m supposed to type my comment on what my favorite food is at a picnic.
Sooooo…. I haven’t been to a picnic in soooo long, but I do remember taking my kids on picnics when they were small! It sounds simple but it is a simple peanut butter and jelly sandwich, don’t laugh! They loved it.
My Mom, on the other hand, used to fry up some chicken and we would take it on road trips and that was something to look forward to stopping and eating!

  19. Thank you for sharing your process of auditioning fabrics for making the block. It all made sense to me! I appreciate the learning experiences you provide.
