Each Block in Grandma’s Kitchen will be a memory or event. And this week we talk about some special items from the kitchen….

There are certain things we remember.. and for me.. that is the glasses & cups used by each of my grandma’s. I tell you the story in the pattern.. but here is a bit more…. you see… I think I was most fond of the jelly jar glasses.. and my brothers liked the aluminum cups.
And what do I own?

One of Granny’s Aluminum cups… in RED!
Did you know you can still buy these new? I saw some HERE. although none with the fluted top edge. When I got this red one out it was much smaller than I remembered. I always thought of them as large cups!
I am getting back to doing the blocks in my Sunday Drive fabrics, I am excited to be doing the 2nd colorway!

I remember the cuite little juice glasses Grandma Bays had! They had oranges around the rim and had a matching juice carafe! They were just the right size for little hands! They made you feel grown up because they were glass. At home everything was plastic or paper! I’ve seen them in antique shops and have been tempted to buy a set. But I’m trying to keep my life simple so I resist the temptation! So from my collection of fabrics for this project I think the orange and turquoise was the best choice to recreate those little glasses.
Correction to my post. Photo 88 above has the glass in it.
Pic 86. At the farmhouse Grandma always offered ice cold
Spring water. Tasted the best in her barrel shaped
Glasses. We got the remaining one stored in our China
Cabinet for now. Many fond memories come to mind when we
Take the glass out. Nice hearing about others favorites
In this group.
i didn’t know they had a pitcher!

ours were not very large by today’s standards.. great memories for sure!
Nothing like it and haven’t had a good one for so many years. So good.
My grandkids like to drink from the little glass jars that dried beef comes in. My paternal grandmother had an orange juice set that I liked. My prize possession from her is her deep cast iron chicken fryer skillet. I had two fantastic grandmothers and aspire to be like them with my nine grandkids. Just finished my Solstice quilt top yesterday and ready to start this quilt along! Thank you!
Last year I made a huge comment on the neighbors having those aluminum cups. My husband found two sets. New! We only have milk or kool aide in them. Man! Memory lane.
I didn’t know about fluted ones. Everyone knows not to choose the purple colors ( as those are my favorites).
This is such a great project.
Pictures 17 and 18 are mine. I really stepped out of my usual colour choices (don’t laugh) by going to orange and grey with a bit of green. My quilting along with you so far (Solstice Challenge and the Children’s Library) are blue and white with a bit of pink (former) and green (later). My grandma’s glasses are in my cupboard now. Lovely little ribbed glasses that were used for many things – juice or milk for the kids, wine for the adults. (Grandma came from Italy in 1927.)
Sharon I don’t know of any corrections. I have not done 6 myself. I did a search of my FB group and see no posts on 2017
Pat, I have asked on FB, but got no answer. I have worked on block 6 of Be My Neighbor and got the tile row 1+” too big. Is there a correction in the measurements or am I just not getting it right? TY if you could take a minute to respond.
What I remember is two cups getting stuck together. Then my parents discussed using science. They put ice cubes in the top one and puts the bottom one in very hot water. It worked really well.
Ah , the cut glass triffle bowl, very deep , so that you can get lots of layers, lots of deep layers! Now I’m thinking about Christmas, we fight for leftover Triffle for Boxing Day BREAKFAST.
I have a set of those glasses and a pitcher, also. They belonged to my mom. They are so much heavier than the reproduction ones they sell now. I was actually closer to my grandmother’s sister than my grandmother. I have a set of mixing bowls that belonged to her. The finish has numerous cracks, but I love them. So many memories.
Yes!! Remember those metal drinking glasses, and my former mother in law had them for years. She worked for John Morrell Co in Ottumwa, IA, and said she got them while working there – not sure if they were an advertising item or not. You can still get them from The Vermont Country Store on line. We also had the jelly jars, but sadly none survived. For me, I have my Granddaddy’s super oversized Blue Willow coffee cup – it brings a smile every time I walk by it in my cupboard! Very nice block!
I remember this metal colored cups and the small jelly jars, when I was young. I’m already 69 and my parents would have been in their 80’s. We sure didn’t worry about lead in those days. I have my Mothers dishes, the ones we used on special occasions. Thank you for the memories.
I watched you looking at Sunday Drive fabrics last night. Love how you used them in the block. I have been enjoying the pastels and flowers but this makes me want to do another color way. As if I do not have enough already started!!!!! Thanks for inspirations. My Mother-in-law has a cupboard full of those metal glasses along with cartoon glasses like the Flintstones and etc. I do not remember glassware at either of my Grandmothers! Have a great day!
We did not have those fun aluminum glasses – but my BEST friend did! It was SUCH a treat to have some ice cold Koolaid (yes, poured from the smiley face Koolaid pitcher) and some of “Drupy”s homemade cookies!
I love all these memories. I have a small oval platter that Granny used for bacon or sliced tomatoes. My Grandpoppy worked for Southern Pacific Railroad and it came home with him at some time. I also use her flour scoop and some canning utensils. I finally finished the UFO’s I was working on, yesterday, so today I start this fun quilt along.
Pat, I already commented about the glasses, but got to thinking about the few things I have from one grandma. My mother was a war bride from Britain so my grandparents were in London. My father was Air Force and put in for tours over there so mom could visit them. We spent 7 years total there and I got to visit with my grandparents about once every 5-6 weeks. My mother has given me a couple of items of grandmas that I cherish. One is a crystal biscuit barrel or cookie jar here. It is an oval about 7 inches tall of clear heavy crystal with a lid. The English are very big on their biscuits (cookies) 😀 The other item is a clear cut glass trifle bowl. Trifle, a cake, pudding and jello and sometimes the cake was soaked in brandy, concoction that is so good, was served in this. Nothing like what may be served here. So those are the two things I have of grandmas that I treasure. I have never used either, they are on a shelf in the hutch. Wish I had her trifle recipe.
My Granny had those glasses like you have in the photo. Water always seemed colder when you drink it from them…
You remember correctly, Pat. Those were large cups. And they kept cold drinks cold too. I loved them but sadly don’t own any. I’d forgotten all about them. Thx for the memories!!
I have a small green pitcher etched with a cabbage of my Grandma’s. She always served her homemade syrup in it for her yummy pancakes. Even with its crack it is a prized possession of mine!
I remember the fabric covered cupboard, they were like curtains…. hiding all the dishes in Grandma’s kitchen. For me, I have 2 little Hummel Doll Coffee mugs. One is a rainy day cup and one is a Sunny Day Scene. I love the Sunny day one with all it’s chips around the rim and the Rainy Day one~ Well… It is perfect for a Rainy Day!
