Each Block in Grandma’s Kitchen will be a memory or event of mine. My hope is that you have a special grandma memory that is similar or it triggers a wonderful memory of a favorite person in your life. Several people have told me they have asked cousin, aunts, other family to join them in the memory making. Some are making the quilt for their own grandchildren about them as a grandma. I love how it becomes a personal journal.

Block 16/25 is Small Change. Dig into those childhood memories, or look to what you do with your grandchildren. Do you sneak them some change when their parents aren’t looking?
In the pattern I tell you about my small change memories, and my mom’s! (ps… looking for those Unicorn scissors, find HERE)

I gave myself a Fun challenge on creating a quilt using this block in repeat. I think this is fun as I turned each one to a different position!
I have gotten the layout all drawn, now I’m working on the pattern… stay tuned!

Thanks for all you do for us. Love this quilt.
I remember buying candy at the store, but mostly with my mom. We would get a nickel. I could not decide if I wanted 5 pieces of bubble gum, two tootsie roll pops & 1gum or a large tootsie roll bar to make the most of my nickel.
I love the memory that has come to me from this block. My grandfather also gave us change to run across the street to the little store that sold candy and cigarettes. (I think he was looking for a way for some peace and quiet because we had to eat our candy outside. Maybe he didn’t want Grandma to know either.) Anyway, it was such a treat for us to go and get something. It would take my brother, sister and I quite a while to decide. I was relating this story to my cousin who lives in Tennessee, while we lived there and he was very indigent that he was never given money to go to the candy store. Not sure if we begged and he gave in or if he just did that for us. But, we were at Grandma and Grandpa’s a lot because we lived in the country and Mom would drop us off when she had a lot of errand and grocery shopping to do. (It was always cheaper to leave us at Grandma’s during grocery shopping!) Such wonderful memories have come to mind from your quilt along!
Love this block and the name. My grandma lived across a busy street from Dave’s Burger Shanty. They also sold Dilly Bars. If we were good we always got money for a dilly bar. Some of the sticks had stamped under the ice cream 1 Free Dilly.
Hola Pat Sloan. Me encanta su bloque 16. Es gorgeous. Muchas Gracias. Saludos.
love this . my great memories of my grandmothers seem to be similar to others. The huge room created by my grandfather for my grandmothers quilt frame, sewing machine etc by knocking down a wall between two rooms was a comforting place to spend time. of course, there was also the homemade noodles, special vegetable soup that even the most ardent anti vegetable person loved, a special room with an african violet collection (another adaptation by my grandfather. I am saving all of the blocks so i will be able to create this wonderful quilt when our move is completed. Thank you for this special walk through memory lane.
I do love your new site -I’m also loving your QAL’s
Hi Pat, Love this block and loved your story of loose change.!

Oh Pat, I giggled when I saw block 16. My Grandma had all her teeth pulled but couldn’t afford dentures. Every time we got ready to go home, we would leave coins on Grandma’s kitchen table for her “Denture Fund”. I’m not sure where she spent her change, but it wasn’t for dentures. Thanks for all you do and for the great memories.
Love this block. On Saturdays when my mom was shopping my grandma gave us a dime which we spent at the Guild restaurant on a coke. ( 7 cents) and some penny candy. What a treat!!! Love my Grandma. Thanks for the free blocks. Judy
Thanks for block 16… love them all and all your work and talent… thanks…
