Do you have a Kitchen door now? As a kid? maybe grandma had them, maybe not? I wish I had photos of the doors in my home. The shipping department over the years has taken photos of mundane things like that, which over time, are really not mundane. They are the little pieces that make up our whole life.

In the pattern below, I tell you the full story of my Kitchen Doors… and some tips on color going forward.. so read on!

This is the point in the project where I really start looking at color placement.

Put out all your blocks. This is what You can look for

  • Is there a particular fabric or color that sticks out, but it’s the only one of that color or fabric and it’s kind of bold.  Maybe a pop of orange in a block. Now is the time to be sure it has some friends. Add in more of that color or fabric as you make the rest of the blocks.
  • Do you like the colors at this point? yes.. great!
  • But what if you don’t? I ask myself a few things.. WHY don’t I like it? Too bold? Too mushy? Too bland? Not enough calm area for my eye to rest? maybe TOO much calm and it needs a spark. Take some fabric swatches & place them on the project & see if you like adding that in or taking it away.
  • Is ONE block bothering you… still? Remove it from photo. Do the rest now look much better? Then figure out what is wrong with that one and redo it.

I know many of you would like the setting, but I have not been able to work on it. I have about 1/2 of it drawn, but that is a long ways from having a pattern for you. With my free weekly project that is just how it will be. I will get it done, but I need time to design it.

I’m also behind on my own 2nd colorway, which does not bother me, I’ll work on it when I can!

  1. I am almost ready to start sewing my first jelly roll quilt! Now all I need is confidence! I haven’t sewn in a few years. I have found your site very helpful and informative. Everyone seems very friendly and helpful. Thank you for adding me.

  2. The last quilt I made was for a young Girl Scout leader who asked if I could make a memory quilt from six pairs of her granddad’s plaid trousers. I made floating tumbler bow ties.

  3. My last finished quilt was made for my sweet nephew Jacob, it was the bug jar quilt. He was so excited and said he didn’t know that there were boy quilts. It still makes me smile thinking back on that memory.

  4. I would love to have this jelly roll. The last quilt I finished was for me. I finished the top in 2005 but just now finished quilting it. Tennessee waltz pattern.

  5. My last finished quilt was a quilt for my nieces wedding. Now, I am worked nag on quilts– a Halloween for my wall and one for a grandchild.

  6. The last quilt I made was for once, ME! I never make anything for me. I have been sewing when I can for over a year , and have finally finished it! Can’t wait for it to be quilted and bound. I loved making it!

  7. The last quilt I made was for my son’s kindergarten teacher. She taught all year while battling cancer and made my son find the love of school!!! She was the absolute best teacher and exactly what he needed for his first year of school! So I found out her favorite colors and made her a large lap quilt and gave it to her on the last day of school. I saw her at open house this year and she said her and her daughter fight over who gets the quilt each night on the couch! Made my heart happy!!!

  8. The last quilt I made was for my soon to be Grandson who is due to arrive 12/23/2017. Christmas babies are the best.

  9. I just finished a baby quilt for the first grandson of my best friend who passed away from cancer 5 yrs ago. She never had the chance to be a grandma so I am trying to help her out.

  10. The last quilt I made I gave to my daughter for her ( grown ) sons bed when he does a sleepover visit. It was a kit from Connecting Threads. It was a learning experience for me as the pattern was way out of my comfort zone.

  11. I tend to make smaller projects these days, but the last quilt I made was an Amish with a Twist kit. I didn’t know who it was for until my daughter was visiting from Houston, saw it, and asked if I could make her one like it! She’s getting it for Christmas!

  12. My last quilt – I’m currently working on. It is a quilt for my co-workers 2 1/2 month old baby, diagnosed with liver disease at 7 weeks old. She’s already undergone one surgery and will have to endure others. I’m a hand quilter but am in the process of machine quilting (with my sewing machine), so I can gift it too her quicker. I made it larger 55″ x 55″, so mommy or daddy and baby girl can snuggle beneath. Thank you for all you do. I appreciate your sharing your talent with us!

  13. My last quilt was for “Pilots for Patients”. A group that flies patients free to their doctor appointments and I make quilts for the patients.

  14. The last/first quilt I made was for my husband. I’m enjoying the quilt alongs you are doing for us. Thank you for all you do.

  15. The last quilts I made were for a brother and sister, ages 8 and 7, who have been in the foster care of my niece and her husband for almost two years. In December, these lovely children will be adopted by my niece, and I made quilts to give them to commemorate this beautiful occasion.

  16. My last quilt was a simple pinwheel made of various shades of purple in a large throw size. I’m not really a purple fan and still can’t figure out why I bought the fabric. Must be my addiction, lol. I am donating the quilt to the Women’s Spousal Abuse Center.

  17. I made my last quilt for Animal Rescue, Inc. to either be sold or raffled. It’s to benefit the rescue and the thousands of cats and dogs it has and will help.

  18. Thanks so much Pat for the tutorial on how to leave a comment….I was one of those people who couldn’t figure it out. I love all you do for us! The jelly rolls are beautiful!

  19. I just finished a quilt for my grandson his birthday is next month. I got a pattern of a dog and redid the pattern to fit my left over stash, thank you for all you do

  20. The last quilt I made is for my sister’s ex-husband’s wife. She has been battling cancer for several years. I designed the quilt which turned out beautiful.

  21. I just started quilting in January and I gave my first quilt to to my Mother for Mother’s Day. She’s 83 and loves it. I’m now making a quilt for my Mother In Law for Christmas. Your web sites have been great for tips and tutorials for this beginner. I love to buy jelly rolls and the other precut material, it really helps with matching up beautiful colors and patterns that I haven’t quite got the hang of. You & Moda have done a great job! Thanks again!

  22. The last quilt I made was for my granddaughter Rhandi who turned 5 on August 26. She absolutely loved it. I would love to win your Sunday Drive Jelly roll. It’s beautiful 😍

  23. My mother only had one sibling, my Aunt Carol. She is also my godmother and maintains that role even though she is 86 and I am 57! I made her a large lap quilt for her family room to cuddle under. She was so excited and appreciative.

  24. I recently gave a lap quilt to my neigbour’s father who has terminal cancer. She’s taking care of him with her whole family. They are passing sad days and the mr. is trying to handle this diagnostic because the doctors evicted him.. He can’t walk neither eat but he wants to eat. 😐🍂

  25. The last quilt I made was for my mom who was battling lung cancer. I lost her may 20 this year. So I use it when I need a hug.

  26. Hi Pat, the last quilt I made was for my great granddaughter who is 6 weeks old. I am getting ready to make one for great grandson who will be born in November, they want a Steelers quilt…I am a Redskins fan! Thank you for all you have taught me!

  27. Everyone used the kitchen door to come and go at my Granny’s house. It had a wooden screen door that one time I locked my Granny outside. I really didn’t mean too. I was really trying to keep my brother out. Granny just happened to be outside, too.

  28. My Grandmother’s kitchen door had a SCREEN DOOR……and I loved the sound when you ran through it and you heard the spring going tight. And then SLAM! as you let it go. Needless to say my Grand mother did not like this noise…..BECAUSE….after a few times of this…..SHE would have to LISTEN as my Grandfather repaired it….Muttering loudly and NOT to himself. Maybe applique a screen door quilt with activity going on behind “Screen”.

  29. I am so behind on the blocks. I need to get caught up.
And now you are going to join in on the Spelling Bee? LOL how long before that one starts?

  30. I remember my grandmothers front door more than the kitchen door because we granddaughters would sit on the wooden steps and play some sort of game where one of us would hide a stone in our hand and the others would sit on the top step. If you guessed the correct hand that held the stone you could advance down a step. The one who got to the bottom step first would lead the game. I can still hear the tromping up those hollow wooden steps and hear the screen door slamming when we girls were tired of the game and wanted cookies.

  31. It looks like you wrote these tips just for me! Color placement is my biggest issue! I do have one block bugging me – and I re-did it. But thinking to redo it again. And I introduced another color, that I now need to add to future blocks.
