I designer this website ‘I Love to Make Quilts’ for my FREE weekly sewalongs. The Solstice quilt is 25 blocks .. that means…

I’m sketching the next quilt!
The Theme!
The Blocks!
The Size!
….. OH MY!
The next set of blocks will start either June 28 or July 5, i have not decided yet. The 28th is our Wedding anniversary.. so may July 5… i will decide in a bit!

This is my Favorite Storage containers right now, the darling little suitcases!
AND the Needles are the notion of the month.. I buy a box of 100.. serious… you can then freely change your needle and it’s much less expensive per needle. Split the box with a friend or 2, it’s so nice to just open a box and have a needle. I piece and applique and machine quilt with either a 70 or an 80. Take a look at what you are currently using.
- BUY the SUITCASES and watch the video at the bottom of the page.
- BUY NEEDLES, you’ll be happy you did!

My Favorite kit right night is the Juicy Cactus.. it’s just spectacular and on sale!

I love you’re sew a longs. Can’t wait to see what you have for us. 😊
cool!
Pretty much Carol, but check with your manufacturer to be 100%
Pat congratulations to you sometimes its very hard to overcome things.
Im pleased to see that quilting has given you a new lease on life. I also love to quilt and find it relaxing and a wonderful way to extend my thinking. I have used Pat Sloan quilting block designs before and like you learned so much from each one.
Happy days to you Pat will be thinking of you as I quilt

Mary Anne a lot of factors go into a perfect 1/4 seam… if you are piecing with an 80 or 90 then do my test for finding your perfect 1/4″ It’s on my tutorial page

Thank you Donna, welcome to the world of quilters!
wonderful Jeanne!
what a sweet note, thank you Pat! I’m so glad you are being creative
and 80 for freemotion quilting to have a little bigger eye
Julia the 90 are for thicker thread, give the smaller eye a try!
I use 70 or 80 Roseanne
Cindy sorry I was on travel and didn’t get to the comments until today. I generally buy the quilting, but microtex are a bit sharper. I use the 80 more often for machine quilting.
thank you Etta!
I’ve used 70 & 80 too.. hope you join in next time!
The suitcases are there now Kim!
haha…. that is what I hoped!
Your life has certainly been an inspiration for alot of ladies who love to quilt. Thank you for your story.
You crack me up the theme, the the blocks the size oh my ! Made me think Of Dorothy in the wizard of Oz!
I like the Microtex sharp needles for piecing. I use size 70. They also work well for quilting, though you might then want the size 80. Very sharp needles and make a nice stitch. I prefer the Microtex over the Universal needles. The Universal are for stitching on wovens or knits, so not as sharp, not as even of a line of stitching. Hope that helps.
Pat…you are always so creative. I had too many projects going, so didn’t do the Solstice blocks (though did print off some of them) but look forward to seeing what you are designing next! Thank-you for sharing all your quilting expertise and creativity.
I ordered a set of suitcases a couple months ago…don’t see them as currently available…but love them…I have zippers in the largest, rick-rack in the medium size, and the smallest has snaps, hooks and eyes, and a few other fasteners.
Loving the Solstice, can’t wait to see what’s next!
Pat,
I use a size 70 or 80 for quilts. Do you buy the microtex or quilting needle type when piecing quilts. What needle type do you use when doing continuous quilting through the quilt sandwich? Thanks for clarifying.
I will order 200 when I get your response.
Cindy
I love these little suitcases, and I do need to get needles. I don’t know what size I use . . . isn’t that horrible?!! I will have to go look. ~smile~
Hi, Pat.
I am so happy with the Winter Solstice quilt blocks. I am also happy you are going to do another quilt. I know how busy you are with everything, but I don’t do all the sew alongs and am so happy with the weekly sew along. I hope the day is lovely for your anniversary. Charlotte
Yay for June 28th wedding anniversaries! It will be the 33rd for us this year.
I’m having fun using my Japanese fabrics on the Solstice blocks. I’ve been making two each week, and sending one to a friend going through a tough time. It’s a little weekly package of love for her, reminding her that I’m thinking of her even though we aren’t near enough for visits.
Yippee! My Splendid Sampler book arrived and am drooling over the designs.
Right now am trying to decide which block to make first.
Am enjoying the Solstice blocks.
Thank you for sharing so generously. Am having a great time.
Me too. 😃
I can’t wait to see what is next. I am loving the Solstice blocks and may do another set with another theme.
I love all of your creativity and suggestions. I will be looking for a good online distributor of the 80 or 90 needle. Also, Happy Anniversary really early. June 28th is my anniversary too; 37 years.
I love the Juicy Cactus quilt design. I think it would be perfect for my Oro Valley, Arizona (near Tucson) home. I just bought the backing, sashing and binding fabric for my Splendid Sampler quilt. I learned so much making these blocks. Thank you Pat and Jane for a great experience.
Does the smaller needle size make the “perfect” 1/4 inch seam line easier to achieve? I’m older, but had always been taught to quilt with 90 and piece cotton with 80 or 90 and sew a scant 1/4 inch seam.
I have just recently taken up quilting, took a class in January/February, and quickly became hooked! How I found you I am not sure, Web surfing leads one in many directions. But in any event I think your love of quilting and your willingness to share your talent is wonderful! From the bottom of my heart I thank you!
I just read “Teach Me To Appliqué” from cover to cover! Love the book and will design next year’s middle school course on appliqué.
I have bought the 100 needles. Got them from mass drop. Great deal. Nice to know you don’t have to run out and buy needles when you need one. Best purchase ever. I bought the 80/12. That’s what I use majority of the time.
Pat I just received your latest book, The Splendid Sampler. I started these with you and was unable to keep up so I’m so happy you made a book. I want to make copies of the extra blocks too. Each one is so different. I’m learning so much from you. I just wanted to say thank you. I was forced to leave my job about 10 years ago when I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma. I had months of chemoththerapy and then a stem cell transplant. I have a terrible immune system so I’m unable to leave the house much. So I always had a desire to quilt. Your Facebook site, your website and your books have been keeping me so busy I make quilts for our local abuse center and of course for my relatives. You have taught me so much. I love your creativity and the colors you use you are very original. Thank you for all you do. ❤️
Hi Pat,
I’ve been using 90/14 needles is it better to use the 70?
The ones I say above…70 or 80. Usually I use 70 for everything with my Aurifil 50wt
Pat,
What size needles do you buy when you purchase 100? Love this idea!
