It is so fun to design a project for the Fat Quarter Shop's Button Club. I like to have the buttons sit on my desk for awhile, it' lets me find a fabric or a inspiration to start the pattern.  The purple and yellow were my inspiration and when i found the Tula Pink Monkey Wrench fabric, I had to do big flowers! It turned out so cute!

**** TIPS ***

Making sew and flip blocks is easy with my Babylock Solaris and it's guidebeam!

Many of these are directional fabrics.

To keep them straight I place them next to the machine with the sew and flip squares so i did not twist them in the wrong order.

Another way to look at adding the buttons

I'll sew them on after it is quilted.

**** Bonus! ***

I saved the larger cut and flip units and made HST. These will go to make mug rugs! I might use the banana's as a square next to the HST to make a larger mug rug.

I also save the strips from each layer cake and sewed them for the binding.

  1. I have made quilts for many years and involved with several guilds that participate in events. I make quilts for Quilts of Valor, Row House, Bo’s Place, local homes for elderly and special needs, Baby quilts organizations–just to name a few.

  3. Oh, Debra,
Where on the Olympic Peninsula do you live?
I was born in Seattle and I had grandparents who lived in Quilcene, another set lived in Pt. Townsend and are buried there; and my parents and one of my younger sisters each lived in Pt. Hadlock. I have a niece that lives in the Olympia area with her hubby and little girl. I have a sister that lives in Pacific and her daughter and family live there, too. And, here I am in the midwest since 1999. We migrated from California mountains. OMGosh, what were we thinking? The bugs are awful out here and love my blood!!
    Peace and blessings, Vicki

  4. I’ve helped with our guild’s charity quilts, made blocks for quilts for the James Cancer Center patients, and pillowcases. When I retire, I want to volunteer at the animal shelter.

  5. I make quilts for charity groups my quilt guild supports. And place mates for meals on wheels for the receptionist.

  6. I have been making masks and gowns for our local hospital system since early March. Our sewing group picks different projects and
It normally is making walker caddies for our nursing home and gifts for our elementary school Christmas store. Of course we switched to the mask and gowns in this special time!

  7. Today is my Thankful Tuesday and I have been sewing up items for the local historical society to sell in their gift shop. It helps pay for repairs and projects. Of course there were scads of face masks for friends, families etc.

  8. I volunteer with a church group called Helping Hands. We make quilts that are donated to cancer patients and patients with other infirmities. One lady and I make fidget quilts for Alzheimer patients. Recently before our group was cancelled for March and April and now May, I guess not so recent, we were in the process of making large and extra large bibs for nursing home residents. Some of us made masks for a local nursing home employees. I have also recently made 150 masks for a local business. I haven;t gotten to a point that I make quilts at home to give away, although I do make them for family members pretty often.

  9. I retired in 1991 & since that time I have volunteered with my quilt guild, Red River Quilters in Shreveport, La to make Love Wrappers baby quilts & cancer caps for our local hospitals. It is something I love to do & give back to our community.

  10. I’m a member of a prayer quilt guild at my church. We make quilts for those that are sick. We put ties them so our church members can tie a knot as they say a prayer for the recipient. We always put “Be wrapped in God’s love on the back.

  11. I worked in an adult role for many years with the Boy Scouts. I now support child care professionals in many ways including training, and support. I try to pay it forward whenever I can and while this isn’t technically a volunteer role, I think it is helpful and supportive. Have a great day everyone!

  12. I’ve donated baby quilts to those I don’t know, through relatives request. I have donated fabric to family and friends for mask making, and to a school that started a sewing class. I have donated a lot of fabric and household goods in the past, to a women’s shelter in CA. I don’t belong to any guilds as we are travelers. I hope to do as much as I am able to in the future.

  13. I lead a quilting group at my church that meets once a month to make lap quilts for our shut ins or people undergoing serious illnesses. I choose the pattern, copy it for everyone, choose the fabrics, and precut everything so we are ready to sew. Some patterns may take multiple months. When the quilt is finished, I layer the quilt and make the binding. There are 3 of us in the group that quilt, so sometimes I also quilt it. Whoever does the quilting, also puts on the binding. Since I retired a year ago, I am also part of our Mission Crafters group. We meet every two weeks and do a variety of projects. We help host our widows and widowers Valentine Lunch, we work closely with a group coming out of homelessness called Ready to Work, we make quilts for our missionaries who work at a women’s clinic in Zimbabwe. We make many, many MASKS that we giveaway at our church for the general public, or to groups who have requested them.

  14. In the past I volunteered at food pantry. I would take my young children with me to help and to teach them, that even though we are in need you can also give back. I also love volunteering in my church community. I facilitate a women’s circle group and since we cannot meet physically we are meeting virtually which is a new experience for many. I also love making baby quilts for new babies at our church to welcome them. Also was teaching a few friends how to make quilts, [it’s a WIP] lol. We have to keep busy. I enjoy your videos. Be blessed!

  15. For the last ten years or so I have donated quilts to an auction for a children’s home. The home serves teens who just need TLC. I have also given quilts to the folks who work there. It’s so rewarding to share them this way.

  16. With Winter coming I would like to make quilts for everyone in the local Home where my 2 sister in laws now resides. Bright ones that makes them smile every day when it is cold. I have lots of excess fabric pieces and your Monkey wrench design with flowers etc would look great and it is big enough for the elderly to be able to see them better. I hope my husband might help me to sew them.

  17. My volunteering these days is with my quilt guild – mostly making quilts for our various community service projects, QOV quilts also. I also volunteer to help with programs and events that we host. I pretty well burned myself out on physically volunteering prior to my retirement. I served on six boards (at the same time for 6 years), organized an Easter basket program for less fortunate children (for 20 years), was leader of three different women’s groups which did community service volunteer work, worked with my local 4H, and volunteered for additional community projects as they happened. So when I retired I decided my volunteer work would be scaled down, though I still support many organizations with monetary donations. I have many fond memories of those years and have many friendships still from those times.

  18. I teach 4-H members to sew and have since my daughter was in 4-H. I also organize a quilting workshop for kids for a week each summer in June through our extension office, so sad we can’t do it this year. I also help organize the County Fair quilt block contest and set the quilt together each year that will be auctioned at the fair. I have made costumes for school, church, community college, and volunteered to do numerous repairs and alterations on dresses needed by high school students.

  19. Love this!!! I tried to order the Tula Pink Monkey Wrench fat quarter bundle and it’s sold out!

  20. I’m all about charity sewing. I’m doing the Hope sew-along today for The Linus Connection in central Texas. I got 19 of my 24 blocks sewn and squared up, and still need to iron and square up the last 5 blocks. So, I did good today. My personal monthly goal for The Linus Connection is five receiving blankets and one pieced quilt. I am on schedule, so far, for this year. I also sew with a soldier group for vets and wounded servicemen two days a month. I have been sewing 12 port pillows per month for The Breast Cancer Resource Center in Round Rock, Tx. Due to stay-at-home orders, they are not needing them for several months right now. I have done 4 quilts this year for the Hands2Help annual drive. Keeps me busy and out-of-trouble.

  21. Pat, so far my volunteer work has not been deeply rooted in quilting, but in family instead. For 41 years I have helped, guided and transported my 46 year old stepson who has a learning disability. I made quilted Christmas stockings every year to sell at his school fundraiser. For the last 13 years I have kept, transported to and from school and loved 3 of my grandchildren two days a week. (Kudos to the other grandma who keeps them the other 3 days.). Now I’m just down to one…the five year old (the older 2 can ride the bus & look after themselves.) I also facilitated a ladies bible study gathering for many years. I was lamenting to a friend that I didn’t do any volunteer work. She was kind enough to respond with “what do you think you’ve been doing.” Bless her heart, she just lifted that woman’s guilt we seem so good at dumping on ourselves!

  22. I volunteer with my church and also with a suicide awareness organization. I’m always looking for new ways to volunteer. My husband and I are moving in a week and I look forward to new volunteer opportunities when we get home.

  23. I retired 18 months ago and moved to a new town – fulfilling a dream for my husband to be close to water. I dove in and currently teach Faith Formation to 4th grade, High School, and Confirmation students. I started a Women of the Bible study (and we have a quilt square pattern for each woman we study for those who want to do that too). I joined the church quilt group and the Sr. Center quilt group – both make quilts for those in need. I visit the home-bound and do hospital visits. I also sew adult bibs for one of the local Hospices and in the evening crochet hats, hand warmers, and squares for KAS. I try to send a couple packages of these to Africa each year. Now with quarantine, most of this came to a screeching halt. We adapted.I’m sewing masks. I stay in contact with my students and others through Zoom and old fashioned letter writing. My husband and I stepped up to deliver Meals on Wheels as so many are now stuck at home. We have a 50+ mile run 3 or 4 days per week. There is always a way to help care for others and we love it!

  24. For 14 years, my volunteer work was to teach beginning reading and math skills to adults with special needs. Now, my volunteer activity is to bake a cake once a month for feeding the hungry. Also, once a month, I spend about 2 hours setting tables and getting things ready for feeding the hungry. Additionally, I bake cookies which are given to new residents in our neighborhood. Now, I am busy making face masks. Also, I give quilts to senior citizens.

  25. For volunteer work, I have 2 commitments with the church I attend. I also started making quilts which will be donated to an organization that helps children who have been physically abused. In the past I have done volunteer work with seniors on a geriatric assessment unit, as well as worked for adult literacy programs as a tutor.

  26. When certain tragedies happen, I join my Guild in making a quilts for victims. I also volunteer at the local Hospice Shop.

  27. I make quilts to be stored in my quilt guild’s Community Closet until needed. They are given out for natural disasters, house fires, and for the police to comfort children removed from their homes. I have also made a Quilt of Valor which my guild (Trinity Valley Quilters Guild of Fort Worth) give to the family of a policeman or fireman who died in service anywhere in Texas.
When it is safe for my community to open again, I will return to volunteering at my local library Thursday mornings where I use the computer to remove returned books and materials from patrons’ accounts and then they can be reshelved for the next person to enjoy. I have been doing this for over twenty years.
Finally, I lead a weekly Bible Study group in my home which will resume when things are safe. We are all in the senior category so must be cautious. This group has been meeting for 24 years now.
I am an Army wife of 25 years where the value of community service is valued, but I first learned this in my youth from my mother who was a loving, caring woman.

  28. I volunteered at a Hospice house until last year when I moved out of state. I would like to do volunteer work again in the near future.

  29. Hi Pat, Currently I have made over 415 face masks and all except a few have been donated to a local hospital, the Sheriff’s Office per their request. I also have a “Giving Tree” in our front yard next to our Little Library in our subdivision. I have strung the giving tree with clothesline and hang masks on the clothesline about once a week for our neighbors to take what they need so everyone can have a mask. No excuse for not wearing a mask! I also started a Quilt Ministry at our church in October, so 3 of us make and donate lap size quilts not only to our parishioners but others we hear that are going through a rough patch. We make them, then our priest blesses them and the parishioners come up after mass and they tie the knots while saying a prayer for the person getting them. So far since Oct we have made 26 quilts. I am also in a military outreach program at church and we send packages to service people we hear of that are away from home. Keeps me busy and out of the bars! LOL Thanks for your blog and wonderful patterns. Together we all have HOPE!

  30. Lately I have been sewing masks, scrub shirts and hats; what a privilege to help in this very worthy cause. It seems that many many people have joined in so I have finished those things. Now I am working with a local charity making various things for doll kits for children in trauma and need. So far, dolly back packs and blankets, next some clothes for the dolls.

  31. Our church sewing group made 1,000 Little Dresses for Africa over a 5-year period. More recently we sewed many lap quilts for a local hospice, and ditty bags for the New England Seafarers mission. We had completed almost 100 recyclable bags for the congregation when Covid1-19 came along. We look forward to the time when we can meet up again in person. I have really enjoyed Pat’s videos these past 2 months. I am accomplishing some of the projects, but have a long way to go. You are inspiring!

  32. I make quilts for hospice and veterans. I also make fidget quilts. I prefer the muff style with many textures and items for the patient to feel. The inside is always a soft fabric to relax the hands.

  33. I am a member of WV CEOS (West Virginia Community Educational Outreach Service). We do a varity of community volunteer projects and service projects in our State and local communities. Some of the projects is Backpacks for children with food items for when they are not in school, totes for cancer patients, toys for children for Christmas, food items for local food pantry, and I could go on. I also, teach quilting and sewing on Mondays every week. I love helping others to learn sewing.

  34. Right now I am making masks. I move to New Mexico a little over a year ago to care for my mother in-law. I gave up working with special needs adult and children. We did art, sewing and cooking out of my home. I volunteered with several organizations.
When everything settles I would like to volunteer at the nursing home my mother in-law passed at.

  35. I’m going to look into some volunteer opportunities. We have recently moved to a new area, haven’t had a chance to check many things out yet.

  36. I make quilts for several different charities in my area.
Thanks for the darling button pattern.
I watched your conversation today, 05-03-2020 during the HOPE challenge. Your HOPE quilt looks great, it will be fun to see the finished quilt.
    Thanks for ALL you do.

  37. I want to volunteer at the local animal shelter. My California guild makes pillowcases for pediatric units at SF Bay Area hospitals, and baby quilts for the county health department’s Healthy Start program. I haven’t gotten into the swing with my guild here in Washington yet.
