I’ve been fascinated for years about starting a project on the Winter Solstice and ending it on the Summer Solstice. That is 182 days between them this year.
A 182 days to focus on doing a project… something fun… creative.. free flowing. And doing it together is way more fun than by myself!.
I will be posting a FREE block every Wednesday. Most will be 12″ finished, but i might pop in something else.. I’m creating this as I go from my stash so you do the same… it’s a grand experiment in FUN! Somewhere along this journey I’ll give you a setting.
What to Do (otherwise known as the Details)
- Enter your email to get a notice of when each block is posted
- Make 25 blocks with me in 182 days
- Find some fabric you love…. There is NO supply list.. this is a jump start in creativity, go with the flow and use up something you have. You can add to it as you go along.
- A FQ Bundle plus a background
- A layer cake.. or 2
- Gather the basket of fabric scraps and go totally wild!
- Share your block at the Quilt Show below by clicking the blue box (tutorial here on loading a photos)

Hope Tom get my sewing machine out today. I don’t have a sewing room so I set up on my dining table. Now that company is gone and I should not have any for a bit I can start sewing. I find it hard to pick fabric. Would it work using a fat quarter pack of ten and coordinating background? Or just use scraps to make the blocks? They won’t match though! Suggestions?
Love the churn dash! Looking forward to joining in the fun. I’m starting a little late, but I’ll see if I can catch up.
Starting a week late if ok with you! Just found this but super excited!
This sounds fun!
Just getting started with the solstice challenge. This should be fun can’t wait to see this complete series.
I am going to try this. I printed off block 1anddon’t see block 2 since I think that should be today. If you get behind where do you find them? Will they listed by block number and you can just print off? Thank. you. I love this site on facebook. Through this site I have made a wonderful FB friend in N.C. We communicate almost daily.
Hi Pat,
Thanks for another quilt along! I’m also doing the Splendid Sampler, which is my first quilt along.
I saw the churn dish block and decided to make this one too. What fun!!
Thank you for keeping me busy!π±π·π Hoping your 2017 is full of fun, family, and fabric!
I have tried 3 times to sign up for the 182 day challenge. I am not getting the confirmation email or anything. Is this normal? I just started sewing this fall and would love to do this challenge.
I definitely agree with the other stash-busters — I probably would never NEED to buy fabric again, so I’ll try to make this a scrappy project. π
This is fun. I have decided to make all the block in a variety of fablics from the collection Indigo Nature by Daphrne B. Licences to Wilmington prints.
I am excited, I never joined in anything online before. Can’t wait to see what’s next. Thank you, π€
Accidentally added my block twice. Oops!
Yeah. I’m in. Heading to the sewing room to cut out and sew the first block….
I love Churn Dash and just cut my fabrics for the first block. I love scrappy too. I have the biggest stash to pick from
How exciting! I’m looking so forward to quilting along with you.
Hello Pat,my daughter told me about quilting group, I have been quilting for my church group we give them to world relief program, plus make small baby one to help new mom’s starting out, I’m looking forward to working with all the quilters in your group, sincerely Karen
So excited, I’m ready
This is going to be fun! I’ve been slowly working on my Splendid Sampler, but I’m pretty far behind. Love that this is 12″ blocks.
I plan to use my smallish stash of Civil War fabrics for this. I like the 1 block a week plan. I should be able to keep up with that.:)
Thanks Pat!
Thank for the challenge. I have made two quilts for Christmas gifts so I am pretty new at this but would enjoy working along with others.
I’m in.
What a great idea! It goes right along with my challenge of using my stash.
I am glad you chose a bigger block for this quilt along. You are one busy lady!!!!!
Sounds like fun! Thanks!!
I think this is a nice break from the Splendid Sampler, I love that you chose a simple block. It showcases my new fabric nicely(and I will have to pick others for the Children,s Library mystery
I got the block made up quickly and it was relaxing. Sometimes after work and during the holiday rush, I need to create something simple and be able to relax and enjoy rather than be challenged and learn something new or more complicated.
THANKS PAT.
Have enough to choose from in my stash I should never need to buy anything more. Right, who am I kidding.
Have my layer cake in my stash….how much background should I buy?
Thanks, love that I can just use fabric that I have on hand. Merry Xmas
Gotta join in –Churn Dash is my favorite block!
Good timing for a new sew along. Will definitely join in the fun. Thanks Pat. Merry Christmas.
Thanks, Pat! You are awesome and so generous! Merry Christmas!
Thank you!! I will try to make the blocks each week. Sounds like fun!!!
Churn Dash!! My most favorite block. In fact, it was the very first block I made when I first started quilting!! It must have been a sign…I am definitely in this!
I have never made this block. Can’t wait to give it a try

Thanks Pat! Have wanted to join one of your groups for awhile! This is it!
Sounds fun. But then every challenge you have is fun. Bought your bicycle pattern last week. It is just so cute.
You always have such wonderful blocks and I love following you. Still behind in SS so hope I can keep up with you in this one. Looking forward to fun and interesting blocks. Thanks for all your help.
I am going to try this, looks like fun!
Yippie!!!!!! You got the fire under my feet!
Thanks Pat, even though it is summer here in Australia, I am looking forward to this sew-along!!! Thanks for keeping us all so excited with your enthusiasm!!!
Yeah!!! I was wondering what to do after the SS!! And I actually have a little stash to play with!!
I love Churn Dash too! I have a wonky churn dash quilt in my UFO pile. Maybe I will add it to my 2017 UFO to do list. I will be collecting the first three blocks ready to make up when I return from my holiday. Off to Thailand for two weeks on Christmas Eve. Merry Christmasπ
Can’t wait and this time I indeed to do it come heck or high water π
I love Churn Dash too! I have a Churn Dash lap quilt that is “on deck” in my pile of projects. This looks like fun.
Oh goodie, maybe I can sew along with this one?Sure would like to.
Got in way too late for The Splendid Sampler. Ugh. Really like so many of those blocks and wanted to make them but life got in the way.
I shall shop my stash. Yea.
I just retired & was thinking about joining a group. This is it!! Thanks for posting this.
I’m game! Let’s do this! π
And here I was wondering what I would do with my new FQ pack, that I just love and had to buy with NOTHING in mind to use if for.
Given the first block, I think this will showcase the fabrics perfectly. Thanks Pat
Looks great. I will have to do the reverse of you, start on summer solstice and finish on the winter solstice. The churn dash is my favourite block!!
Hi Pat, this is very exciting! I have been enjoying the Splendid Sampler!
