Panda Pop! A Free Pattern.

I have a long love affair with Pandas.  Big, soft, cuddy, cute .. what’s not to love?

This mug sits on my desk with pens that I use every day. My mom and I visited the National Zoo in Washington DC many years ago and she bought it for me. The National Zoo has Panda’s.

Last summer I again went with my family to the National Zoo with and we discovered the Panda Control center.

Complete with a Panda Cam you can watch from anywhere!

If you have heard my talk at a guild, I took a group of quilters on a tour of China right after the Olympics were there. We were so excited to visit the Panda section of the zoo.  I couldn’t find a photo of me there, but this is the Shipping Dept and some of the Pandas.

This is also where i had bubble tea for the first time, it was really tasty!

We did this short little video back then… it was a wonderful trip!

Fast forward and the Fat Quarter shop did a single Panda block and had a blog tour where several people made the block in different styles.

The free pattern (below) is for one Panda. The ADORABLE 4 block version is made by Angie

I love this floral one from Owen’s Olivia.. both for the tour when the pattern was first released.

Earlier this year I found out my Sister-in-love is addicted to the game Panda Pop, and it became a bit of running family joke… so I decided she needed her very own Panda quilt!

I added sashing around the panda so it was 20.5″ x 20.5″

Then collected all those 2.5″ squares of mine in shades of light blue. Added a very wide white with blue Polka dot border and shipped her quilt as a surprise!  It was SO FUN to do, now I want one!

  1. Thanks Pat for keeping the Wednesday’s Mystery postings going with this lovely little Panda. We have Pandas at out local Zoo that arrived in May; they will be here for the next 4or5 yrs. I have Zoo membership so I get to see them anytime I want. They are so cute & fun to watch. They ship tons of bamboo from Beijing China on regular basis to feed them. I’m only 20mins away from Zoo. I found Panda fabric at my local fabric shop, and thought it appropriate to make Panda Table placemats for Christmas stocking stuffers (if I ever get time to make them).
I’m so looking forward to starting the Christmas “Bright & Merry” Quilt starting July 25th. I’ve have some Riley Blake; Ann of Green Gables, and a few other Christmas fabrics ready to go.

  2. THANK YOU, to you Pat and FQ Shop for this darling free pattern. I’ve been a Panda fan since my first one 70+ years ago. Big smile on my face!

  3. OMG…..I am over the moon in luv with this block! Thank you so much! I’m so glad I found your ilovetoquilt page! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Sitting at the campground wishing I had more stash with me…lol

  4. Pat, This Panda is positively adorable! I’ve got 6 baby quilts to do between now and February so this little cutie will definitely be in one of them.
