In June the running challenge for the month will be to practice quilting your own quilt using a panel.

These are the basics you need.  I quilt with pretty much this. I don't use any other tools. We are sticking to the basics.

*** Details ***

We are 'Going on a Picnic' … It's time for an Easy Breezy Summer Sew along!

The blocks are a mystery until I publish them. Find the details, Supply List, Fabrics thoughts, and a link to each block when it is published are all below.

Details

  • RUNS:  June 24, 2020 to Sept 9, 2020
  • Blocks: 15" finished
  • SIZE: Lap size  61" x 78"
  • TIMING – Wednesday around 7:30am EST. Email notice goes out noon-ish in my time zone, EST. The email is NEVER when the block is published.
  • Technique – All Easy Pieced. Each block will be named and a story/memory about a Picnic item. Could be a recipe, could be a location.. I'll mix up the topics each week to keep it fun!
    • NOTE: The Block does NOT LOOK like the topic of the week. This is not a pictorial quilt. I do a topic as it is way more fun than just plopping out a block.  I love the memories and sometimes research that goes into the topic.  That keeps my Sew alongs fun and unique.

*** The Fabric ***

I'm going to let you pick a Fat Quarter (FQ) bundle that you love!  Right now fabric is moving out of store at the speed of Light. Also to keep employees safe during this Coronavirus world wide Pandemic,  less people are working at one time in the warehouses, so the supplies are shipping slowly to shops and out of shops to us.

That means we'll keep it simple. I have 3 suggestions above. I will be using the middle one, Goldenrod.  As these sell out I'll change to other fun options.

Fabric Options

Supply list – this is in the download above as well

  • 1 Fat Quarter bundle of 23 pieces or more .. a few less will be ok.
  • 2 yds of background
  • 2 yd for border
  • 1 yd for sashing
  • 5 yds backing

You can of course use your collection to create a gorgeous group or use another fabric line be sure to give yourself a variety by having 23 or so FQ for variety

  1. I keep putting aside a set of hexagon shaped appliquéd blocks that need squared up so they can have borders added and assembled so I can complete the quilt. Just so scared I’ll mess them up.

  2. Beautiful fabric line! These are great to and I love the accent fabrics you have designed to go with it. I really like the bags and patterns that will accompany your fabrics

  3. I am basically just a weekend hobby quilter, but did do the April stay at Home sew along. I don’t have it finished yet. L look forward to your chats daily. i have been working 40 a week in a factory making hazmat suits. Thank you for your tips, and you are encouraging to just keep going forward. Doe from Missouri

  4. Thanks Pat. I like working with panels for faster finishing. However my free motion skills need to improve so I will be working with something I s as breadth have. Do you recommend fusible batting? Thanks again.

  5. I liked the all or nothing comment I got when I asked do I prewash. Now I’ve purchased my first Charm square pack. No way I’m
Washing those. So oh my stars we’ll be a mixed match. I’ll get color catchers and hope these quilt fabric holds.
I liked your Answer based on end use if you wash pre wash

  6. You are giving me so much incentive to get things accomplished. I appreciate your daily visits.

  7. I was never inclined to prewash until I made a lot of masks and was requested to prewash. WoW!!!! What a difference. But I probably won’t prewash for quilt piecing. But I would totally mix if it was something that is already washed. And I PLAN and tell my receivers of gifts … USE IT, WASH IT, DRY IT and WEAR IT OUT!

  8. I am not sure if this is where I comment to get entered in the giveaway, but I will enter it here. You asked who I gave my last quilt gift to. I actually just finished 2 cute embroidered dogs quilts and both of those have been given (just not shipped yet) to charities. One is K9s Helping Heros and one is Charge Against Cancer. The first one provides therapy dog assistance and support to first responders and the second one is a charity that raises money for canine cancer research. I have already given a lot of quilts to friends, so I decided that I wanted to give a lot of my work to charities for fund raising. It makes me happy.

  9. The last quilt I gave away was a baby girl quilt. I was supposed to use Texas Longhorn fabric in it… I did and added some beautiful flowers and colors… it turned out pretty. IF you don’t know, their fabric is orange and black…. not pretty orange either…. burnt orange… it was fun.

  10. The last quilt I gave away was to my sister-in-law who is still fighting stage four ovarian cancer. I told her it was to be used not looked at and every time she wrapped herself in it I was giving her a big loving hug.

  11. Dear Pat: Working on catching up with getting top done on cbb as well as other projects so I will then start up again with the Picnic Quilt Along at the end of June. This will be perfect timing, and a great motivator so I can get caught up with everything! Thanks again, Pat!

  12. A day of firsts! I just ordered my very first fat quarter bundle, Agatha’s Garden (they only had one left!), registered for block of the month (never done one of those before) and helped your small family business. So excited. Agatha Christie is my favorite to sew seriously to, and the colors are perfect for me. I plan on purchasing my second fat quarter bundle when your Morrison Park is available. It is just beautiful. The dailies are so refreshing. Thank you so much for sharing you!

  13. My quits are for Snowball express. Any time I shop fabrics I choose prints for kids of Fallen hero’s. I’m excited to work on panels for them also. I am however sad that we may not be able to participate in the annual distribution this year at Disney. Thanks for all you do for us.

  14. I have a number of 9″ crazy quilt blocks made from leftover quilt projects and have been wanting to embellish them but my hand embroidery abilities are not up to par. This June challenge is just the right ticket to complete my blocks! Works out great!

  15. So, do we actually need some panels for this project? How big are they supposed to be? Looking forward to this!

  16. The last quilt I gave away was in March. My daughter and her fiancé had to put off their wedding because of the virus so I made her fiancé a quilt to welcome him to the family.

  17. Hi Pat. Last quilt I gave away was given to a child transitioning into foster care. My guild is supporting a local organization that assists the families. Feels great to help.

  18. I am excited about the new block Wednesday even though I am still doing the current Children’s Games. I plan to sew the next one in fall colors and hopefully will have it finished for Thanksgiving.

  19. Haha… I was watching you as I was de cluttering my guest/leftoversewing room. It makes it easier to do when you have someone to listen to and watch. ❤

  20. Hi Pat,
If you are using the Golden Rod fat quarter bundle, what are your going to use for the sashing and background. Looking forward to this starting!
    Nancy

  21. Love your video’s you have great ideas for everyone. The last quilt I gifted was to unwed mother’s for girls who don’t have means for their new babies. I love helping them out during this time of being coming a mother. Gives them hope.

  22. I have already asked my LQS to order it. It is really gorgeous. Also I have bought the panel that you suggested to do the free motion quilting on. Can hardly wait. Free motion quilting has been on my bucket list for a long time. Thanks Pat.
