Let the Solstice Quilt Layouts begin!

When I started this project I told you the only plan I had was to make a quilt doing one block a week between the winter & summer solstice. This was a project I’ve thought about for years.. and I finally just did it.. and I invited all of you to sew along with me!

So I started designing and sewing blocks only days before I show them to you… this has been a BLAST for me, it’s exactly as I hoped. Each block is a bit of a memory, or a happening from that week.  Block 13 is Studio Time … done during my studio makeover.

…. and like things do…  something happened.. since over 30,000 of you are also sewing along… some people prefer things to be symmetrical and asked if I had a 12″ block when I have you giant sized ones… so .. I thought.. why not! Personally I am only making the original but I for each oversized block, I have given you a 12″.

As of today… Mar 18, 2017.. these are my blocks. Today is the 3rd Saturday in March… National Quilting Day.. woohoo! And I’m giving you the setting directions.. are you ready?

  2. Oh my! One of mine ( I’m doing two) is soooooooo busy. I’ve used brights andmayhave over done it. Hope to ask for help in toning it down. Such fun.

  3. Thanks Pat, I found it! Thanks for the joy I’m having making these blocks. I’ll have 4 quilts when I’m done!

  4. Pam, where did you find the directions for the checkerboard blocks? I’ve been looking everywhere. Your help would be appreciated! Thanks

  5. Pat thank you so much for this quilt along. Not only as I learning a lot, having fun, but for me I made it to Spring without crying about winter! This quilt along has been fun and a great distraction for me not to be dwelling on winter. 😘

  6. Pat thank you so much for this quilt. I am soooooo glad I found your web site.
For many years I have hunted for block of the month. This year I am making 2 of your winter solstice quilt, and your library quilt. I hope when the winter solstice is over you will do another weekly quilt. I know it is a lot for us to ask and you are a busy lady. PLEASE

  7. Hi Pat, I signed up for your workshop to make “My Little Blue Bird” appliqué and I’m am really struggling with the supply list..lol. I have never attended anything like this before, and I downloaded the supply list…my problem is I don’t have a stash of anything that is probably worth bringing… and when I go to the local fabric store I get brain stuck on things to choose… any suggestions? I am great when things are set out in front of me. Lol

  8. I’ m taking my solstice fabric to quilt camp this week sure hope to be caught up by next Sunday. I love your asymmetrical setting. It has been a long winter here in Idaho and I selected spring colors lavender, purples,, greens, Fayettte by sentimental studious for mods. Thank you!

  9. Wow Pat – I am amazed to learn that you design the blocks shortly before you share them with us. I would have guessed that you had an overall vision of the quilt before you started sharing with us. I love to hear about your design process, and I’ll bet your new room has added to your design process with the room being organized and pleasing to your eyes. I love this solstice quilt!

  10. Just because I’m curious. What do you type with the “Symbol MT” font? When I download the patterns it always says it can’t use that and may not show correctly. But it always looks great to me.
I love all your patterns and also the asymmetrical nature of your block layouts. I love controlled chaos. I love the little uniting touches you’ve added as sashing, etc. too. Keep up the fabulous work.

  11. Where did i miss the post of pat telling us the size of checkerboard blocks? It must be here , according to comments, but for the life of me do that see it.

  12. Cut small squares 2.5 x 2.5 so finished size in 2 x 2? Just want to make sure before I cut. This quilt has been fun. Can’t wait to see it all done. Linda

  13. Thanks so much!!!! I have been so wanting to start on the checker board squares. Figured they would be 2.5 but did not want to cut into the scraps until I knew. There are lots of small pieces of my fabric so it will be fun. And not a totally organized checker board but definitely light and dark. Am loving this so much. It will be my favorite quilt for awhile. Maybe a long time. Thanks a bunch for sharing your creativity and giving us a challenge. Just love it. Rosalie

  14. Thank You, ThankYou, Thank You…..This is the info I have been waiting for…..I now know how to best use the fabric I have been using to make these blocks……Luving this whole quilt so far……Thanks for this sew-a-long……Dot M.

  15. You astonish me with all of the things you find time to do. I don’t know how you manage to fit everything into your day. I love the Solstice designs and plan on making the original blocks. I’m having so much fun going through my stash and finding just the right fabrics for each block. My quilt is going to be quite scrappy as I have promised myself to use only what’s in my stash.
Thank you for such wonderful blocks. You are an inspiration.

  16. LOVE LOVE LOVE this project!! Thank You for being so encouraging through it and for the asymmetric layout!! I have wanted to do one for many years but have not – this challenge is giving me the courage to step out of the block box!! Have a wonderful quilty day 😀

  17. I am excited to see this completed. Now to decide on the sashing colors for my b/w scrappy top. Thanks so much, Pat, for sharing your fun with us.
