My siblings and I had a similiar situation with our mom. Dad was still alive, both living at home. Us four girls took turns staying with them at their home. One day mom just wasn’t herself and she no longer could walk. It was like a Stroke. Never wanted to put either of them in a nursing home but we couldn’t handle this. Mom was never alone while in the nursing home. My brothers, each working day, would dropped dad off at the nursing home. They would pick dad up at the end of their day. Dad thrilled the nursing staff by singing to mom love songs. Us girls would coue after that and stay till she went to sleep. When dad passed it was a different story. Us girls would take turns staying with mom throuhout the day. Our brothers would come, after work, usually carrying some Brawm’s ice cream. Mom loved that. Mom wasn’t always coherent, but we would take her, in wheelchair, around the building. Play games with her, watch birds at her birdfeeder. When we knew that time had come for her passing, us girls were singing; “What A Day That Will Be” ! I miss them every day, but so thankful we got to care for them like we did. Enjoy your mom – the good, the bad, the ugly; it’s all worth it.
Hi Pat,
Enjoy your time with your Mom. There is a lot to process for both of you and going there to assist her will be full of emotions and work and your fans will wait for your return. I never lived super close to my parents and siblings after college and did miss spending time with them. Only got to see them once or twice a year. Definitely different than living in the same state or town. Take care of yourself and we’ll spend time with you when you are able.
Pat, do what is needed, we will be here when the time is right for you to come back! You are doing the right thing now for your mom and yourself. Bless you and take care!!!
Enjoy alll the time you are able to spend with your mom. New memories will be made and cherished! I downloaded the summer calendar. I look forward to watching your videos when they return. Thank you for the grandma’s kitchen sew along.
Hi Pat, I think it’s wonderful that you will have the opportunity to spend some time with your Mom! We will miss seeing your smiling face a little less often but I for one really appreciate all that you do. You’re blessed to still have your Mom at 85 so you should spend as much time with her as you can. Take care of yourself and your family and I will tune in when you are available.
Love to you!
Diane
I had a similar situation with my Mom. She was in her mid 90s when she fell and shattered her leg. My father passed away when she was 52 and she’d been independent in her own home since then. It was determined by her medical team and the family that she could not live alone so the decision was made to move her to a small apartment in a retirement home. She didn’t want to deal with her “stuff” so it fell on me to deal with it. My brothers and I sorted, donated, and disposed of her “stuff.” It took weeks and was difficult on all of us. A lot of memories were in her home. We finally got her successfully moved and she was able to be there a few years before she fell again. We had to move her again to an assisted living home where she just had a room for her bed, furniture, etc. Third move was to a facility with nursing staff where she lived until she was 103. I cherish every moment I was able to spend with her.
Enjoy your Mom and may she have many more productive years. Take all the time you need, we will still be here wishing you well and waiting to see you again.
Enjoy your time with your mom, Pat! This is a precious time with her and so glad you have the opportunity to be flexible to be with her.
Debbie
Go for it Pat! Sometimes life gets busy and admitting to ourselves that we need more time to do what is right. For myself, we tend to be more busy from May/June with yardword, then July/August is beach times and visiting. Now we have a puppy to train, adding to the craziness of business.
It’s also okay for us, crazy fanatic quilter to take time off from our sewing happiness, and enjoy the summer with our family and friends. I certainly will watched your Wednesday just to keep you awesome updates. For I know for sure, we all going to be back to normal by September.
Enjoy your Mom:)
Having had to deal with similar issues, I applaud you for doing this for your mom.
