** Block #1**

When I hear β€˜Lets Go on a Picnic’ the first thing I think of is what type? Is it a family reunion? A gathering after a game? A company picnic? Will it be a small gathering or do we need to reserve a pavilion for all the people?

My favorite picnic memories are my family reunions. Held at parks where there rows of picnic table under covered pavilions. One time ours was held at a location with a pool, that was exciting.

Another favorite of mine is a small impromptu picnic. Grab a few things and head to the winery or a park. No planning required!

This is going to be such a fun memory filled sewlong, thank you for joining me!

  1. Thank you so much for noting the pattern name of the beautiful red & white hanging quilt behind you. I have admired that quilt for sooo long and now I plan on doing a red & white with that also. Please, could you also give us the pattern dimensions of the HST in the border; that really adds to the whole quilt design. Thanks again!

  2. I have a three potato recipe that is to die for. It uses white, red and sweet potato. May not sound good, but if you roast the potatoes and add the minimal ingredients, it’s awesome.
Pat, would love to see you show us the books you’ve written in the past. Doesn’t matter if they are out of print, and if you have any quilts from the books, show them along with the books. It would be inspiring. I am in awe of your history and how you have changed from folk art-ish to what you do today. Wish I would have found you years ago. You are a good teacher and conveying thought processes through the creative process is invaluable. Just an idea I’m throwing out there.
Also, another idea, would be to have the Shipping Dept. hang some of your old quilts on a clothesline and you can walk down the line talking about each quilt – – like a mini quilt show. That way you don’t have to use your hands, but you do keep gesturing with them! (I know it’s a lot of work digging things out of storage.)
And last but not least, if you wanted to demo sewing something, have one of your friends who lives close to you come and sew for you on your video and you can do a demo that way. Again, just throwing ideas out there.
Love ya, girl. Get well. Don’t overdo it….

  3. Pat, still cannot get Block 1 but Block 2 came thru just fine!!!! Go figure!!!! 😊😊😊😊😊

  4. Pat, I am curious as to why I cannot download this on my Kindle 10? It comes up as almost like Chinese. I have downloaded lots of your block on here. I went in thru Silk and then went thru MSN homepage and it still didn’t work. I have tried just Silk browser, and Facebook. Do not seem to be getting these in my email tho. I did get it to work on my phone, but it is soooo small. I have no access to my laptop until Oct.Any ideas??? Glad you are feeling better. Have a great day!!!!

  5. When my boys were little we went on a picnic every weekend. We would pack a lunch and head out in the back yard or the woods that surround our house. Now I am lucky to have a granddaughter and we picnic whenever she visits

  6. When my grandparents were alive, we had 2 picnics a year. 1 for each side of the family. both sides were large. We have since then cut it down to 1 a year at a area park that has trails. I remember when I was a little girl getting lost in those woods and to be found by the park rangers. Great memories of childhood and family

  7. My fav picnic memories are from the time I was in the US Navy 1980s stationed in Sigonella Sicily. My Sicilian boyfriend Ricardo and I would get fresh Italian bread, rotisserie chicken, green olives, cheese, grapes and vino (wine) and have a picnic! Sometimes we would go by the sea in Taromina or somewhere in Catania. Sometimes just go out on our huge balcony. It was so romantic, I was twenty something and we had so much fun! Thank you for sparking those memories. I love picnics! Ciao

  8. My favorite picnic was old fashion church picnics with my grandparents
I’m using the same fabric as Pat. I broke my hip so I can’t sew right now but will enjoy looking at yours.
    Happy quilting

  9. The town where I live has a park with a lake and walking path. Every Tuesday in the summer the community band plays, the Elks have a BBQ, fundraising for a different group each week. We would usually take a picnic dinner, walk around the lake and our boys would try their luck at catching a fish.

  10. Well… I’m the odd one out because I’ve never been on a picnic πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ and I love to see people picnicking 😁 I’ll sew a virtual picnic quilt πŸ‘πŸΌ Lovely blocks so far, y’all are quick πŸ€—

  11. My favorite picnic was one created by my granddaughter when she was 10 years old she set up her favorite blanket, her plastic dishes and pretzels and juice boxes.

  12. I have two kinds of memories that involve picnics. The first one is related to picnics that we would have if we were traveling. We didn’t travel that often but when we did we never stopped for meals at a restaurant since there were none essentially. We would drive into town and shop for lunch items at a local grocery store. My dad always bought a can of sardines and some crackers that he and I would share. My sister and mom hated sardines so they would get sliced ham and make sandwiches. We would take our lunch items to the park where we would enjoy being outside. My sister and I could run around A bit before getting back into the car. The other memory I have happened a number of years during the summer. For Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day we would invite all of my dad’s family (he was the 2nd to the youngest of 12 children) to come to our backyard for a picnic. Many of them would actually arrive to our back yard with lots of food and lots of kids. We had all kinds of games to play. When it got dark we would head inside and someone would play the piano and we would all sing along. One time my dad borrowed a boat and instead of our backyard we took the boat and had everyone meet us at the lake that was close to our house.. We had our picnic at the lake and spent the day taking turns going for boat rides around the lake. Such great memories that I haven’t thought about in a long time. Thank you for suggesting this memory from our past.

  13. I remember wonderful family picnics and reunions with some family members bring so much
wonderful food, recipes were shared. When I was much younger we occasionally got together for breakfast picnics, my family had some wonderful cooks, such great memories. Thanks for everyone sharing!

  14. My husband and I just recently had a picnic to celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary in June. We got restaurant takeout food and ate it in the park.

  15. Pat, You are just and inspiration to all of us. Thank you for your amazing commitment to all of your online quilting friends. Be well and know you and Greg are in my prayers.

  16. This subject brings back many memories of picnics. My Mom and Dad would have a picnic/BBQ every Memorial Day and Fourth of July after going to local parades for family and friends. My Dad’s company would have a picnic every year. Another memory would be when my Mom and Dad would take us kids to the swimming hole for the day. We would get there early morning and my Dad would start a fire in the grill and make breakfast for us. We would spend the day swimming. We would have hot dogs and hamburgers for lunch and stay until it was time for the park to close. My parents are both gone but even on Memorial Day and Fourth of July I think of the wonderful times like these growing up.
Pat, it was so nice seeing your smiling face on Monday night.

  17. My grandmother loved picnics! I’ll be thinking of her as I make this one. I watched the video, but did I miss something? Where do I find the measurements of what to cut for block one? Thank you!

  18. My favorite picnic was one created by my granddaughter when she was 7 years old she set up her favorite blanket, her plastic dishes and pretzels and juice boxes. Her dolls also attended.

  19. Hi Pat! This block is adorable & I’m excited to try it. Would you mind sharing the details on who makes your magnolia fabric in your block? I just adore it and it reminds me of my bridesmaids’ dresses from my wedding (which feels like forever ago!). Would love to snag some for my fabric stash. Thanks!

  20. I remember early fall picnics with my parents and grandparents along the river. We would have apples to munch on while enjoying a nice sunny day. Not so many bugs to bite in the fall.

  21. Sometimes my Dad would take us for Sunday drives to the country and we would just look for a big tree along the roadside and picnic there. As I grew older we spent summer holidays getting together with my parent’s best friends (they had two daughters and I became best friends with one of them), we would either go to a park or each others home. If it was at my home, we would have a baseball game – girl’s against the Dad’s – that was always fun. Such good memories – thanks Pat for reminding me of all these good times!

  22. In 1989 my husband and I purchased the 1865 farm house that his grandmother and her siblings had owned for over 50 years. A few years later, the family decided to have a reunion as Grandma was in her 90’s and while she was still with us we wanted to celebrate. The tradition continued the next few years as a camping trip to a local campground including Grandma!! Then we decided to hold the camping reunion back on the farm were Grandma lived just next door and could sleep in her own bed. The barn was turned into a huge dining area where 5 generations gathered for picnic style meals all weekend long. Grandma passed away at 102 and a few years later we sold the house and moved from NY to Colorado. The family still shares pictures of those gatherings and many many memories!!

  23. When I was younger, my father would save his store audits for July and August. We would travel all summer to different towns in four provinces. (Canada). Along the way we would have picnic lunches in roadside stops on the tailgate of the station wagon. Those were fun times.

  24. There were many picnics when I was growing up but one was an annual event. My sister was born at the end of August so we always went to the state fair the week of her birthday with my grandmother included. There was no midway food bought but back out to the parking lot to spread a quilt under the lone tree (my Dad always got the car parked by or near it) for fried chicken, potato salad, ice tea in thermoses, watermelon & a pink iced angel food cake. I drive by that parking lot often as I now shop near the fair grounds & was sad when that tree was cut down.

  25. Oh, Pat! Your black & blue fingers on your left hand look so painful! Your smile and positive attitude is so inspiring!
Picnics/potlucks have been a standing thing in my circle of friends. In recent years, a group of HS girlfriends have met annually during Memorial Day weekend. The sharing and reminiscing are always the best!

  26. I left home when I was 21 to join my husband on his military career. I was a home girl so missed family a lot. when ‘we got leave we would be at my Moms and all my sisters and their families and my brother would be there and there was always lots of food and lots of catching up to do. I was the baby of the family of 6 and i considered us pretty close. now there are only 3 of us left and we are all seperated by many miles. but goodtimes with family was always the best.

  27. We have taken our children camping for many years as they grew up. We had a boat and we spent summers in our boat. I would prepare sandwiches and drinks to take and we would spend the day on the water. The kids learned to water ski. Fun memories.

  28. As a child, we would go to my great-grandparents home for picnics or dinner on the ground. Everything would be outside on long tables that were pulled from the barn. The food would be prepared by all the family to share. Of course in those days, the men ate first, then the women and children. Needless to say, there were never any fried chicken legs left for us kids. There were huge pecans trees in the front yards and we always had a good time running and playing with cousins after we ate. I know you probably think that this took place in some state on lots of farmland, but it was actually in Atlanta, GA. I enjoy thinking about those times and the fun we had.

  29. I remember great picnics at my sister-in-law’s place. Plenty of room for everyone
Hubs had a huge family & everyone would come from miles around

  30. One of my favorite picnics was around Christmas time. We lived up in New Hampshire at the time. And my daughter was about 3 or 4 years old. We went to the Pheasant lane mall for some shopping and thought we would have lunch there. After we got our meal from BK, we realize there were no tables available. We found a spot there in the food court out of the way of the foot traffic, spread our coats on the floor and had a picnic right there.

  31. We used to have a lot of picnics when my mother-in-law was alive. She loved picnics. It didn’t need to be a special occasion. I sure miss the spontatity of picnics with her. When we have one we always think of her.

  32. My favorite memories of picnics were when we traveled back and forth from a Ohio to Hazard, Ky with my grandparents and dad and us girls. My parents were divorced and we lived a lot with Mamaw and Papaw in Ky. When we all went back to Ohio together Mamaw would pack up all the food and we would stop along the side of the old 2 lane road and have a picnic! Us kids would run around and play, 4 girls!!! And when everything was laid out we would sit down for a wonderful homemade meal of fried chicken and homemade potatoes salad! Back then it was a 10 hour drive from Hazard to Dayton. After the 4 lane highway was put in it cut the ride down to 5 1/2 hours and put an end to our picnics! Those were the best carefree times as a kid!

  33. Thank you Pat for this new sew along “Going on a Picnic”. I can’t wait to get started later today. I too have fond memories of picnics with family and friends. What fun times!

  34. When I was young we used to have big family reunion picnics twice a year with all my grandmother’s siblings & their families. As cousins moved out of town & the older generation passed on, the picnics also faded but the find memories remain.
