Another block that is PERFECT for a scrappy quilt. There is layout in the pattern and here is where it goes in my layout.

At this point you might want to switch blocks around to make the colors work. Or you might be looking to see what you will want to repeat in the lower section.

  1. I do remember my Granny’s refrigerator! I remember Granny opening the door and the sour dough starter bread over rised into the bottom of the refrigerator. I remember when she got her new refrigerator the old one went out to the ftont porch. My mom took it home and put it in the garage for extra frig space. She replaced Granny’s frig and it went to my aunt’s house. My aunt replaced Granny’s frig and it went to my uncle’s house. He finally replaced it because it was loud. I rescued Granny’s frig and it resides in our barn for cow nedicine and drinks. Granny’s frig is still running to this day! I know it sucks out a lot of electricity, but it had a story! I figure the frig is around 65-70 years old. They don’t make them like that anymore.

  2. My gramma’s fridge got passed on to the lake cottage and ran for more than forty years on the side porch. We used the little ice trays to make “koolaid popscicles” with toothpicks in each cube. All of us cousins were free to run in and out and grab our own sweet juice treats and those summers bring fond memories. Most of those cousins are now in our 60’s and early 70’s.

  3. The thing I remember about my grandmother’s fridge was that it was filled with butter tubs! And no, butter WAS NOT in those tubs. She used them for holding leftovers. Her favorite thing to do was to ask me to get the lemons for her tea. Of course, you couldn’t find them because they were in . . .you guessed it! A butter tub!!! In essence, I played Hide and Seek with my grandmother until she moved into a nursing home at the young age of 94!

  4. I can remember a white Kelvinator with rounded top corners and large chrome clip handle. Inside at the top center was a little freezer (cute) for metal cube trays and a few frozen items. Always inside bottled milk in glass quarts. Tasted good cold!

  5. I definitely remember the ‘fridge. She had the freezer on the bottom with a pedal to open the door. (I think I was told a few times to stop opening and closing the freezer door.) I could easily get to the ice cubes to fill the glasses for ice tea when helping to set the table.

  6. Hi Pat. I just love your blog. I have been following “Grandma’s Kitchen” patterns and they evoke so many great memories of time spent with my grandmother learning to cook and sew. She was a tailor and make many of our clothes. I appreciate learning at the hands of an expert. So, that means I love seeing what you are creating! Thanks so much for your inspiration.

  7. I don’t remember my grandmother’s frig but I do remember my aunts. When I was very young she had a dark colored wooden ice box. The iceman brought a block of ice and put it in the box with large tongs. My aunt had a special bowl that was put under the icebox to collect water when the ice began to melt. She didn’t have the icebox for long and was so happy to get a real electric frig. It had a teeny freezer area with metal ice trays in it. There was hardly room for anything. You had to manually defrost it every month or so. But, it was much better than that icebox…….
