** Week of our Traffic Jam Sew Along! **

Yes I really DO Hope you are sitting in a PILE of Traffic Jam blocks, How fun!  We had a bit of snow yesterday so I asked the Shipping Department take the quilt outside for a photo shoot.  LOVE blue and white against the snow!

This Blue and white is almost done.

What i did to finish

  • sew a white 2" strip on all 4 sides
  • sew a navy 2" strip on all 4 sides
  • sew a white 2" strip on all 4 sides again to finish
  • the same navy will be the binding

This week I make the backing and ship to the 'Spa' to be quilted. It will go to my brother for his birthday in Feb, so don't tell him!

Below you'll find:

  • Download the pattern at the end if you did not get it yet
  • I have options for #2 Traffic jam and how i'm picking border fabric
  • and a table runner made by Barbara below!

**NOTE – Next week will be on the 16th as the Aurifil Block is the 15th

** Selecting sashing and border for the Gray/Green **

For the Grammar fans, I can't remember if in the US we say Gray or Grey?   Feel free to give your opinions in the comments! (ps.. at the end I'll tell you)

I have 4 blocks and will make is 9 blocks total, I am pretty sure I have enough gray dots.

I found enough of this very old white with gray polka dots for sashing, I LOVE IT!

  • The border on the left is too light
  • The border on the right is too dark

Can you guess which one I'll pick?

  • The border on the left is very very nice! I love the richness of it. BUT I do not have enough
  • I could order more HERE
  • The border on the right is a solid and works perfectly and I have pleny

Next week I'll share which one ! selected!

** How to sew Efficiently .. continued **

  • I talk some more about sewing the traffic jam as 2-patches and 4-patches in my Fireside chat
  • And you might want to get a seam roller to help you!

** Options – show how to think it through **

Barbara S made a Table runner!! Isn't it great!

  • 3 blocks
  • She made the middle one with dark corners
  • a 2.5" strips between
  • 2.5" strips around
  • Wave quilting and done!

** Assignment **

  • SEW blocks!
  • Sew into 4 block units every time you have 4 done full blocks. Don't wait until the end, do it as you go.
  • Decide on size of the final quilt
  • Decide on border option, or least start thinking about it.
  • make a table runner, I will be doing that this week!
  • Start a 2nd one by sewing 2 patches when the stop and start a set of chain piecing. That is what I'm doing with a stack of cream squares for my 3rd one

And…that spelling of Gray/Grey?  gray is the more popular spelling in the US, while grey reigns supreme in the UK as well as Ireland, Australia, and other places that use British English.

  1. I want to make a traffic jam quilt for my grandson. He chose the pattern and wants blue and gray. How would I determine how much fabric to buy for a queen size quilt? I want to use precuts if I can find the right colors.
TIA for your help. I am an old sewer and embroidery fan but a new quilter.

  2. Received my planner and my project will be a baby quilt. I love the traffic jam and will be starting it next. Love your fireside chats.

  3. Thanks for the traffic jam. Will finish it this month for my youngest daughter who just had a forty something birthday on the tenth and never received a quilt from me. About time I think!

  4. I plan to work on my oldest unfinished project. It’s a Christmas table runner. I laid out the majority of it and it has sat on my flannel board since 2018.

  5. I give up! I’ve tried several times to load pics here of my quilt tops. I cant get it to work from my phone. What’s the trick?!

  6. I am working on a snowman wallhanging, Top is done and I’m working in the quilting design for it. Pushing myself to use more motifs.

  7. Love your blue and white Traffic Jam. This colour combo always look good.
I’ve finished all my squares and now have to pick sashing and border fabrics

  8. I am also 80 yrs young and still enjoy piecing quilts. I make mostly Queen size quilts. I have several quilts on hand for grandchildren to choose when they get married or not . Our 4th grandchild chose her quilt at Christmas time. Its so rewarding to see them so happy to get a quilt. The quilt that Nicole chose was a blue & yellow Bargello quilt.

  9. I have started on Traffic Jam! Going thru years of collecting scraps. Cutting 2.5″ sqs. Anything Less goes into trash! At 80 yrs young some things need to go!

  10. I’m really confused on assembly of the cornerstones and sashing. There wasn’t instructions for that

  11. I LOVES the blue and white Traffic Jam Quilt that you made for your brother. Fabulous. I have not kept going along with the tutorial but I am going to look at my stash of blue and white very seriously. Just gorgeous….thanks Pat! <3

  12. Gray with an A is the American spelling. Grey with an E is the English spelling. That’s how I remember. I’m growing my traffic jam to a 20 block quilt. Using some alice in wonderland I’ve had far too long!

  13. I am loving this traffic jam Pattern ! If I didn’t have so much on my plate right now. But , when I saw the table runner, I thought, “I can do that !” You’re a terrific teacher ! Gray or Grey hmm , when writing gray , it always looks wrong to me, so I will choose Grey ! However, I think that they are both correct.
