Let’s chat 2 up coming Sew Alongs!

I did a video chat about two up coming sew alongs using my books.

You have been making some basic quilts, but only following videos, now you want to use a pattern and are not really sure how the directions work. My skill building sew along will answer those questions and much more!

Most of us are quilting our own quilts on the same machine we piece with. And doing a huge quilts is daunting, and freemotion is scary.  I will show you how easy it is to quilt in sections with your walking foot, everyone is successful!

I’ll be giving you ‘bonus’ tips, like showing you one Quilt as You go  method to attach units you quilted.

At the end is the video i did telling you about it!

Skill Building Sew Along

Using my Teach me to Make my First Quilt, we’ll do a series of lessons. This is for

  • Those that never made a quilt
  • But even more so, for those that are self taught, not quilted very long, have not made one in a long time. We’ll fill in all those knowledge gaps by making several projects from my book
  • And I really hope many of you teach someone else to quilt. Someone in your family, a neighbor, a co-worker or a friend.

Quilt Your Own quilt

You can quilt your own quilt and I’ll show you how to use the walking foot technique on our Grandma’s Kitchen.

Sewing the top 2 rows together will allow us to have a large unit, but not too large to maneuver in the machine.

If you don’t want to use your Grandma’s Kitchen project for this, find another project you can quilt in sections.

BACKING ESTIMATE

Grandma’s kitchen top with a 2″ wide border all around is 62″ x 81″

FULL QUILT

  •  add 8″ to give a backing size of 70″ x 79″
  •  FULL QUILT backing needed is 5 yds

Quilt As You Go (QAYG) in 3 sections –

  • add 6″ for quilting EACH of the 3 strips. I add a bit less as it’s easier to adjust and place a small unit than a large unit
  • It is easiest for me to calculate by add 18″ for the length which covers the 3 units each having larger backing. Then just 6″ for the width, backing is  68″ x 99″
  • QAYG backing needed is 6 1/4 yds

Get your backing ready to cut for the next assignment

  1. Ordered both applique and machine quilting books, over month ago from overseas (Im in Australia)….still waiting. Now findout they have been lost in transit 😣😣 so back to square one….

  2. Ordered my 4 books !
Cannot wait to get them in the mail and enjoy
The Grandma Kitchen Sew Along .
Question : they sold them almost 50% cheaper
On another site – but it said paper back .
I saw what you had at the video chat – and
it looked like good quality glossy paper .
Wondering what ” paper back ” meant :
My idea of paper back is – brown recycled paper .

  3. If you had to make an estimated guess about how much backing do you think we need to purchase for Grandma’s Kitchen?
